Emerging tourist destinations have everything that the most visited and popular places have lost due to mass tourism which has very harmful effects on the culture and environment. So going to a lesser known or emerging destination you will have a much more genuine experience and prices for hotels, food, etc will generally cost less.

Cell Phone Takes a Bullet Saves Amputeeamp#039s Life

It seems like cell phones can be programmed to do just about anything these days. Add taking a bullet for the team to the list. Roger Baxter, a Colorado Vietnam veteran who lost his lower right leg in a traffic accident last year, had just programmed his cell phone when it saved his life.

Last October Baxter was working for the Colorado Department of Transportation when a semi truck traveling at 70 mph hit him. He spent nearly a month in a coma, had 13 surgeries, and had his lower right leg amputated. Not one to be deterred by adversity, Baxter told reporters that when he saw his leg was gone, “I looked down and saw I had a leg missing and thought ‘Oh well, I’ll deal with it.’”

He has spent the last seven months learning to live with a wheelchair while undergoing intensive physical therapy to learn to walk with crutches.

Baxter and his wife arrived at their home at about 11:00 in the morning on Tuesday, after getting a haircut to get ready for a physical therapy session. They found an armed man inside their house attempting to break into their safe.

Instead of panicking, Baxter told the press, “I got mad.” When the robber threatened him, “I told him to get the gun out of my face. I thought it was pretty low of him trying to rob somebody that’s disabled.”

When the intruder got close enough, Baxter told reporters, “He kept coming toward me and he got within 5 foot of me and that’s when I hauled off and hit him with one of my crutches.” The man responded by shooting Baxter in the chest. His cell phone was in his shirt pocket over his chest, and it deflected the bullet.

Baxter told local television reporters, “…he shot me. Hit me in my cell phone and ricocheted off of that, gave me a big gouge along the side here.”

His wife, Deb, told TV station KUSA, “I thought he was dead after I heard the shot. [But] there he is trying to call 911, he says, ‘Get me a towel, I’m bleeding.’ It’s like, Oh, my God.” She joked that they were planning to buy Baxter a titanium suit, “so nothing happens to him.”

Baxter sees it this way: “It’s not my time. It wasn’t my time when I got hit by that semi in October. I’m destined to do something I haven’t done yet. Hopefully I can take and do something that’s gonna save someone else’s life,” he told reporters. “I’m just a tough old bird.”

Before two suspects (the intruder had an accomplice) were found and taken into custody, local schools were locked down while police looked for them. Two young men were later arrested in connection with the shooting and the break-in.

Baxter was treated and released by a local hospital.

Despite the fact that he’ll have to program a new cell phone, Baxter is taking it all in stride. Adds his wife, “He’s just a very lucky person. And he’s not done on this earth yet. That’s the way we see it.”

Please help: looking for Chinese and Indian herbs (& herbalist) in Singapore?

I will be traveling for three months through SE Asia, including Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Indonesia starting in mid-September. I consume many herbal dietary supplements for my health, but because of possilbe complications getting them through customs (the herbs come in bulk with no original packaging per se), it looks like I might have to find these Chinese and Indian (Ayurvedic) herbs in each respective destination.

So, I’m starting with Singapore. Do you know of any herbal shops which have Chinese and Indian herbs, especially encapsulated herbs? (I’m looking for largest shops, as they are more likely to have the specific herbs I need.) Also, how about a good herbalist? Any names or search tips on the internet would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Visit Chinatown for the Chinese Herbs and Little India for the Indian Herbs. While Chinese Herbs are also available at many housing estates, I am not sure about Indian Herbs.

What you need to know

This convention, which has changed the European landscape by removing the boundaries between member states of the European Union, has greatly facilitated the free movement of people. Moreover, you need to be an EU citizen or citizen of a country that has signed a special agreement with one of the member states (such as the United States and France, for example) to visit Europe without formalities. Are affected by this measure the following countries, among others: Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Cameroon, Congo, Senegal, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Egypt, India, China, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines, but also Brazil, Turkey and Russia.
Nationals of these countries and those of most countries of Asia and Africa should therefore get a tourist visa to visit Europe.

The Schengen visa

In the case of a short stay (90 days maximum), the appropriate visa is soberly called “Schengen visa” for it will allow you to travel between countries of the Schengen area. In history, why did Russia want Afghanistan so badly?

I read a book about someone’s explorations in Asia decades ago and it mentioned road signs being placed in Afghanistan as if to tell the Russians how far they had to go to certain destinations. Almost as if those signs were there to tell any potential invader how far they’ve gone into the country.
As far as I understand it Afghanistan was nicknamed “Russia’s Vietnam” because the terrain made it difficult for them to invade.
What I want to know is why Russia wanted Afghanistan? What value is it to them if they were to succeed?

If you mean Tsarist Russia, then they did want a warm water port, which means that had they taken Afghanistan they would have also wanted the western part of the Indian sub-continent which is now Pakistan.
If you mean the Soviet Union, then I’m not sure. They said they were invited, but the USA said that about Vietnam.
The Soviet adventure in Afghanistan was called Russia’s Vietnam because most people knew that they could not win. Throughout history no one has been able to take Afghanistan. Unfortunately people don’t learn from history. Hence the present Afghanistan debacle.

This pour in of foreign investments were mainly due to the protection given by the local governments to attract investments, low labor cost, and other local factors. They were combined with technology euphoria at that time, particularly fueled by digital technology. The belief was that every company should leverage on technology which could digitize information, because the demand and future are so unlimited. That was premised under the assumption that every piece of information, movie, news, and any other information can be digitized. So the scramble by world manufacturers to set up plants to be part of the production chain was deemed to be profitable. As Asian countries has the lowest cost of production, companies who wanted to remain competitive would throng here. This sets up the foundation of the linkages of industry in the host countries. The presence of the foreign manufacturers coincide with the export orientation policy advocated by the host governments, as it was believed the foreigners could help to seed and upgrade the local players. Thus, many of the local companies were set up and be part of this production chain. And to further increase the competitiveness, government concessions were given out to the local companies, but with strong collaboration with the more capable foreign partners. Many of these concessions were farmed out to foreign firms, and local players who were blamed to be less capable were simply secondary producers, or merely low cost supporters to the flagship companies. Thus, subsequently created the worry of “technologyless industrialization” which the problem became very obvious and enhanced in the recent world economic downturn. As what investor Warren Buffet said, “when the water tide is receded, those without pants are caught revealed”. Another worry faced by the local manufacturers now are the hedging of the foreign manufacturers. China, since 2003, has become the world magnet in parallel with India, as two most attractive low cost destination to the world economy. The set up of industrial estates in Dalian, Shenzen, Kuantong, Shanghai and others, were crowded with foreign investors, due to the accessibility to the mass market, low cost, and most importantly linkages. However, the instability and trade surplus due to the exchange rate Yuan Vs USD, caused concern; US might constrain trade with China. Low quality control, which caused the recent call backs of toys, pet foods and etc, also make foreigners distanced, or at best reluctant to put all investment in China. Through these reasons, many manufacturers are still remain in other Asian countries, or partly set up their plants in China but still maintain the technology and development or high end chain in South East Asia. The last reason is the main concern to the inventors and the flagship companies as the lack of intellectual property rights in China have caused much preservations. So the question is now will the current trend of manufacturing growth sustainable? This becomes very worrying in the recent development; the slow down of demand from US and developed countries in Europe, the emergence of other competitive countries such as Russia, Brazil, Vietnam, and Cambodia. As these countries could offer low cost production, high quality labor, agglomeration benefits (the presence of big players such as Intel, Motorola and Samsung in these countries), the challenge faced by the Asian Tigers (or Kittens, as the robustness of growth is not that magnificent compare to decades ago) are tremendous.

What is worth checking out in Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Philippines, and Malaysia?

I am visiting these countries for 2 and a half months and am kinda of lost on what is worth checking out. I am on a limited budget and schedule and thinking maybe someone out there may have the must see list to these places. I know for certain I want to go to see Angkor Wat in Cambodia and the floating markets in Thailand. Otherwise I am at a loss on what to do. Suggestions or dream destinations welcome!

Btw, if you push through with Angkor Wat, my mom said it would be a 6 hour drive from the capital and since she had limited time, she was not able to go there. just giving you a heads up.

Yeah, floating markets in Thailand would be soo cool. You can also check out the markets at Bangkok, and the beach of Phuket. Visit also the Ancient Temples in Ayutthaya, where you get to cruise around.

Vietnam has a lot of wonderful beaches since it’s a coastal country. But I have really no knowledge yet of the area (sorry!)

In Malaysia, check out the Petronas Towers and have a snapshot of the mighty twins of KL, and I think a train ride could get you right away to Singapore. If you have time to squeeze, you can go to Singapore’s Mega Zip (looked super fun to me)

If you are heading to Manila, PH, you may wanna check out “Old Manila” through http://celdrantours.blogspot.com where a comical tour guide will walk you through Manila for only around $20-$30 per head. He’s really good! Dream destination to date would be Camaroan Islands, Palawan, etc.

Nowadays, there are some several problems in Saigon city at the moment. Government is improving the infrastructure (streets, networking, etc.) for Saigon Travel industry. Thus, there are many constructions surround Saigon. Besides that, teenagers are affected by Hollywood movies. They love racing movies and want to be Ghost Rider.

The main transportation in Saigon is motorbike. Taxi cab fleets are plentiful in this city day and night. Commuters can take bus lines, motorcycle taxis, ferries and boats. You may find a great number of car rentals within the city. Saigon People are very friendly and easygoing. They often smile while chatting with people. You are going to have problems finding “health food” stores in S.E. Asia. There just aren’t any. However, there are herbal remedy stores everywhere. The problem is translation. You will need to do some translations into the various languages before you get to your destinations. Then you can just walk into the shops and hand them the request. Its pretty amazing the amount of stock a lot of these places have! Ask at any pharmacy and they will either have a back room of home remedy’s or point you in the right direction. But… have your translations ready or its tough sledding.

2009 Pieces of Chinese medicine and the overall steady growth of export situation analysis

In 2009, due to the global financial crisis, China’s foreign trade was severely affected. Hoi An travel guide

In the 16th and 17th century, Hoi An, known as Faibo by that time, was a Southeast Asia’s major commercial trading port. Merchant shops from Japan, China, Portugal, The Netherlands and India came here to trade goods all leaving a certain influence behind. Vietnamese ships and sailors based here sailed all around Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia. Parts of Hoi An look exactly as they did a few hundred years agao and Hoi An Old Town as declared a World Heritage site.

 

One the 14th night of each lunar month Hoi An celebrates the festival of light under the full moon. Every month on the full moon, motorbikes are forbidden from the Old Town, which is transformed into a magical land of silk lanterns, song and dance, traditional food, and games in the streets. Streetlights are replaced by colorful handmade lanterns, transforming the town into a magical place.

 

Bordered by the Thu Bon River on the south side and a beautiful beach just outside town, Hoi An is the perfect destination worth lingering in for a couple of days. The Thu Bon River is a very picturesque river with verdant banks on both sides. You can take a boat and go up to the woodworking village for a quiet, serene outing amidst nature. During Vietnam war, I am guessing that Vietnam isn’t what we consider a hot tourist destination for Thailand citizens. From what I read from Golf Digest magazine few years ago, Earl Woods met his wife during on a tour of Vietnam war. My question is why and what was young Thai woman doing in Vietnam during war?

I grew up near Fort Lewis (WA), and heard some disturbing stories regarding Asian women married to American servicemen during 60’s-70’s.

Visit the Smithsonian Museums

Browse the National Archives
People come to the National Archives for all sorts of reasons. If you want to find information about your ancestors in order to fill in your family tree, for example, then this is the place to go to. Some people visit here to obtain copies of military service records, while others come to see the historical documents relating to the country’s history – which even include the original Declaration of Independence.

Bike along the C&O Canal
The Chesapeake and Ohio – or C&O – Canal is a 185-mile canal which was once used for shipping goods to the Potomac River. One of the most popular options here is to jump on a bike and head along the banks of the 13-mile section in Washington, D.C., which runs from Georgetown to Great Falls Park. The C&O Canal is actually designated as a National Park, and is a great option if you want to find relief from hectic city life. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial
The most visited of the country’s national monuments, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial is a 500ft-long by 10ft-high marble wall inscribed with the names, ranks and hometowns of over 58,000 soldiers who died or are missing in action from the controversial Vietnam conflict. The memorial is situated Constitution Gardens and was built in 1982. Also forming part of the memorial is the Three Servicemen Statue and the Vietnam Women’s Memorial. The memorial receives around three million visitors each year.

United States Holocaust Museum
The US Holocaust Museum is one of the most sobering historical exhibits in the world, and is so popular that you may have to call ahead to arrange tickets – although they are available on a first-come first – served basis at the museum. The displays, which feature documentary films, videos, audiotaped oral histories and real items, are some of the most moving you will ever witness – and it’s quite possible you’ll spend around half a day viewing them all. The Hall of Remembrance here provides a space for quiet reflection after your experience.

Explore Rock Creek National Park
This National Park extends from Georgetown right into Maryland, covering 1,700 acres, and is a favourite nature destination of Washingtonians looking to leave the city behind for a few hours. It’s great venue for doing as little or as much as you like – from cycling, hiking, and horseback riding, through to more relaxing activities such visiting the nature center and seeing historic sites such as the Old Stone House and Pierce Mill. Outdoor entertainment can also be found at the Carter Barron Amphitheatre.

Eastern Market
If somehow you’re struggling for something to do at the weekend, then the Eastern Market in the Capitol Hill area is truly at its best then. On a Saturday there is the Farmers’ Market and Festival Arts and Crafts Fair (which has entertaining street performers), and on the following day there is the popular flea market where local hand-crafted items, imported items from around the world and the usual fun flea-market trinkets are on offer. Where Can I Find Round the World Tours?

I am hoping to take my small version of a ’round the world trip’ next summer for 3-4 weeks. It will actually be more like ‘one corner of the world.’

I would like to see Vietnam, Cambodia, Hong Kong, Port Douglas/Cairns Australia, maybe Ayers Rock, Sydney (if i have time, i’ve been there before), Auckland, New Zealand and if i have time/money then up through Central America to stop either in Panama or Costa Rica.

How much should i expect to save if i stay in hostels and do a few group tours and sightseeing things?

Where can i find groups that i might be able to connect to to travel with since i’m looking at doing this first time solo (female) travel? I’m not opposed to doing some of it alone but would be nice to hook up with a group.

That’s not enough time. You need to narrow it down a lot. You are talking about 3 totally different continents. I would suggest you go to Vietnam, Cambodia, and Hong Kong. It seems like that is your biggest preference. I went to 7 countries in Europe over 5 weeks, and I didn’t think even that was enough time. If you want to go to all these places in one big trip, you need months and LOTS of money. You want to enjoy your travels and get to know each place you visit, not rush from one place to the next and spend all your time en route.

The most popular attraction in D.C. includes free guided tours of the house, well, some of the rooms anyway. Don’t expect to meet the president himself while you visit but you may be able to catch a glimpse of him at times. 2. Arlington National Cemetery

This is not a shopping mall so don’t expect to find the latest fashions here. Between this a large green area that is usually bustling with activity. The mall has been the site of many festivals, protests, concerts, and more. Hundreds of people out for exercise jog around the big rectangle every day. The Mall is a good place for a picnic or a quick rest between stops at the nearby Smithsonian Museums.

4. Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens

The Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens is the last natural marsh in Washington DC. These ponds along the Anacostia River are home to many beautiful blooms among the water and is also home to dozens of species of birds.
