I want to travel to Asia for 6 months: HK, Singapore, Taiwan, Malaysia: Any restrictions for US Passport?

I am planning a trip to Asia exploring different areas such as HK, Taiwan, Japan, Singapore, and Malaysia. Length of stay per state or Country is around 1-2 months. Can I be away from US for over 6 months? Any Visa requirements into any of these countries and is there any the Length of Stay restrictions? Can I work while I am exploring the city? What do I need to do to make this trip possible? Thank you for your help!

Answer
You do not need visa to visit all the five countries you mentioned above.

Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Malaysia – visa free for up to 90 days
Taiwan – visa free for up to 30 days

However the above is subject to the following :

- for social visits ONLY
- validity of your passport must be more than 6 months
- possess valid return ticket or ticket to a third country
- able to show proof of having enough fund to sustain your stay if asked

No, you can’t work in all these countries. If you choose to work during your visits, you’ll have to take the risks of being caught by the authorities in these countries.

Getting Around In Bangkok

If you come to visit Bangkok for the first time, one of the first things you will notice is the busy streets and the traffic. The city is very different from other cities in Europe. Don’t get your holiday ruined by hours of waiting in traffic! Reading this article will take approximately 5 minutes, and those five minutes can save you endless hours of waiting.

The busiest part of Bangkok is right in the middle. Around the edges of the city, the streets are a bit more calm. When travelling anywhere around Bangkok, you should always use as much public transport as possible. Trains are better than taxis because they don’t get stuck in traffic.

The best method of getting from A to B is by using the BTS Skytrain. As the name suggests, it’s higher up than the roads. The Skytrain is connected to most of the shopping centers, so it’s a perfect choice of transport for a shopping tour. Once you get there, you will have to buy a ticket; there are one way tickets available and also a day ticket, which you can use as much as you want in a day.

Another option is to get a ‘Smartpass’; this is a credit-card sized plastic card which you refill with money and then just swipe it on a sensor at the entrance gate. This is the best option if you decide to stay for quite a while. Another form of transport in the MRT, which is a subway line. This also connects to popular places like shopping malls.

The BTS station connects with the MRT at three different stations, so it is easy to just jump out of the BTS and head a few floors down, to the subway. The ticket system in the MRT is very similar to the one in the Skytrain. There are also tickets available which work for both the subway and the raised train. To get to places which are not connected to either of the train systems, you will need to take road transport.

Taxi is a good choice, but can be slow because of traffic. An alternative would be a motorbike taxi as they can squeeze through traffic easily. The downside of the motorbike taxi is that it can be quite dangerous on the busy roads of Bangkok, Thailand. And if the trip is not too short, walking is also an alternative. Have a safe trip and a great holiday!!

Answer
I’ve got many friends from UK who loves the Island they called their second home – Penang (Malaysia). It may not be as posh as Singapore, or advanced like Chinese Taipei (Taiwan) or Super-standard like Japan, yet Penang is the choice of many a Global travellers as it has a balance of many things, such as a unique heritage, nature, beaches, food (yes, best area to get the most delicious yet cheap cuisine in Malaysia!), shopping (may not be as many Kuala Lumpur, but hey, many loved shopping here in Penang, as bargains are possible in local retails and markets) and it multiculturalism (Penang Hokkien, a Chinese dialect now made fame for hereditary). Also, you have a choice of accommodations from YMCA/YWCA to motels, from hotels to resorts. Trishaws are famous here, same for the unique Peranakan (Baba-Nyonya or Straits Chinese) culture as well as the famous ferry, transporting people and vehicles between Weld Quay (Island Jetty) and Butterworth (Mainland).

The World Gourmet Festival in Bangkok

The ninth annual World Gourmet festival swept into Bangkok’s Four Seasons Hotel this past September 22nd and entertained food enthusiasts for a week with dinners, afternoon teas, cooking classes and a brunch. Seven guest chefs from as far away as the U.S., Russia and Iceland displayed their culinary talents for an appreciative audience that was treated to great food with fine wines to complement the chefs’ inventive creations.

This year’s festival was a bit smaller than preceding years as two late and unavoidable cancellations by chefs trimmed the field from the original nine down to seven. But there was still plenty of talent present and enough events to satisfy the demand from guests. The festival was deemed a success by the hotel’s management and plans were being made throughout the festival week for next year’s 10th anniversary celebratory event.

Since journalists were given easy access to the chefs throughout the week there was ample opportunity learn about the chefs’ backgrounds and influences and what brought them to their current level of culinary prominence. And make no mistake; this group has been awarded its share of honors over the years from various international food organizations and top travel and food publications, attesting to their level of skill and dedication to their craft. This year’s chefs were Jeffrey Jake from The Carneros Inn in Napa Valley, California; Michael Ginor from Hudson Valley Foie Gras in New York; Maurizio Quaranta from Locanda del Pilone in Alba, Italy; Glen Ballis from Nedal’nij Vostok in Moscow; Siggi Hall from Siggi Hall Restaurant in Reykjavik, Iceland; Celina Tio from the American Restaurant in Kansas City and Michael Laiskonis from Le Bernardin in New York City.

Each of the chefs cooked dinner two nights in one of the hotel’s restaurants with the exception of Michael Laiskonis who is the Executive Pastry Chef at Le Bernardin. He, instead, prepared pastries for three afternoon teas. And all seven of the chefs collaborated on the seven-course Friday night Gala Dinner which also featured live entertainment and an auction with a portion of the proceeds going to HRH Princess Soamsawali’s “Save A Child’s Life From AIDS Project.” Also, the contributions of some of the hotel’s chefs can’t be overlooked. Without a lot of coordination and overseeing from the hotel’s Executive Chef, Nicholas Schneller, Shintaro Chef Satoshi Sawada and Biscotti chef Danilo Aiassa, the event could not be staged.

To give you an idea of what the dinners are actually like, here’s the menu from Siggi Hall’s Monday and Tuesday night dinners that were held in the hotel’s Shintaro Japanese restaurant. The starter was a variety of traditional Icelandic treats made up of herring with horseradish sauce, cured salmon and a langoustine tail. The next course was a piece of Arctic charr, a whitefish, with langoustine sauce served on a bed of julienned green leeks. The seafood theme continued with the next offering which was a baked cod with an almond crust. Next was another traditional Icelandic ingredient but from the land this time in the form of lamb fillet that was accompanied by a lamb sausage. A blueberry pie with vanilla ice cream finished off the meal. Also included in the 4,800++ price were five different wines and coffee.

It may sound a little pricy but if you love good food and wine you would be hard pressed to find better value for money in many restaurants in Bangkok, not to mention Singapore or Hong Kong, especially when you take into account what wine prices are like in this country. Another fact to consider is that most of the ingredients for the various dinners were brought in by the chefs themselves (often in their luggage) so that they could produce their dishes as authentically as they do in their own restaurants at home.

The other chefs presented menus that were equally ambitious and equally representative of their culinary pedigrees. Celine Tio’s menu featured a slow-cooked pork belly dish to emphasize her American roots-based style of cooking. Australian Glen Ballis’ dinner highlighted his combinations of top-quality international ingredients that also utilized some Russian influences. Jeffrey Jake ‘s offerings underscored the influence of the abundance of fresh produce that he uses in his native Napa Valley.

In the final analysis, the World Gourmet Festival is quite an achievement, especially for a hotel staff that continues to run a large five-star hotel at the same time that it is producing 23 special food events in the course of one week. And that doesn’t include all of the preliminary planning, the marketing and promotional efforts, the logistics of transporting the guest chefs and their assistants and all of the other myriad details that are involved. This one-of-a-kind event in Bangkok is the result of lots of hard work and inspiration from many people and it is hoped that next year at this time food and wine lovers here will be talking about what a great success the 2009 version of the festival was. The city certainly needs all of the first class events it can get to help promote itself as a serious dining destination in Asia and the World Gourmet Festival is leading the way.

Where is the best place to travel in Asia?

I’ve always wanted to visit some countries in Asia but I don;t know which place would be the best… I’d like to visit a truly Asia country, mix with modern and old…

Answer
You might want to visit the Philippines. It has a diverse culture being a former Spanish, American and Japanese colony. It was also briefly occupied by the British. The majority of the people are Christians which is rare in the region. There are also muslims and other religions in the country. There are a number of natural tourist destinations you can visit in the Philippines, the most famous would be the beaches of Boracay island with its powdery and white sand. There are a lot more beaches here but Boracay is the most developed having 5 star hotel-resorts such as Shangri-La. Palawan is also a must see especially the Puerto Princesa Underground River which is one of the nominees is the new 7 wonders of nature. If you want a marine experience, the Philippines is a must being dubbed as having the most biodiversed marine life. You can visit Tubbataha reef, an amazing experience! If you want shopping, there is Manila, the capital. It boasts of three of the world’s largest malls namely SM Megamall, SM North EDSA, and SM Mall of Asia. There are more malls to see from high end to low end. Prices are cheap especially in night markets in Divisoria still in Manila. You can get most out of your money in the country having a very low cost of living. You can even have a full meal with less than a dollar. (The conversion is US$1 = Php47.) Every citizen of the Philippines also SPEAKS ENGLISH even the poorest ones so there is no trouble in communicating.

Best countries to travel to in June/July? Cheap places in southeast asia?

I am planning on traveling this summer to southeast asia, australia, and hawaii.
I am trying to decide which country/countries I want to visit in Southeast asia. I was thinking of Bali or the Philippines.
Please recommend me some countries that are cheap, safe, and fun! Does not have to be in Southeast Asia but I prefer it to be. And I’ve already been to Thailand.
(I am a female in my early 20s and will be traveling with my younger 13 year old sister)

Answer
It will be monsoon season in many parts of South-East Asia (Vietnam, Lao, Thailand & Cambodia), so I would recommend Bali or other islands in Indonesia such as Lombok or the Gilli Islands. There is plenty to do in Bali, such as beaches, water park, wild-life park, rafting, cycling and soft adventure as well as excursions to the north – it is well set-up for tourists – Lombok and the Gilli Islands are more laid-back and a perfect place to kick-back and relax.
Have a great trip!

Bangkok Hotels – A Surreal Experience

A visit to Bangkok is often described by many as a surreal experience, especially when one enjoyed a comfortable stay in one of the exuberant hotels in Bangkok. The splendour of the city lies in the fact that this financial hub of south-east Asia, which has also earned the reputation of being one of the best tourist destinations in the world, has hotels which cater to the needs and budgets of everyone.

Whether you are visiting Bangkok on a business trip or have plans to spend your holidays there, this mesmerizing city has plenty of attractions which have the potential of making your trip an unforgettable experience for you. And staying in a good hotel, within your budget, is only going to enrich your experience to the maximum.

If one’s budget is not constrained, and if one is bent upon indulging in one of the most luxurious stays, then it is best to book one’s accommodation in a five star hotel in Bangkok. One can also choose from a wide array of four, three or two star hotels which offer equally comfortable and high-spirited stays. Most of the star hotels in Bangkok like Shangri-La Hotel Bangkok, Conrad Hotel, Grand Hyatt Erewan, Four Seasons and InterContinental Bangkok, match the best hotels in the world, in terms of services or facilities. And if you are one of those who want nothing but the best then, hotels like, The Oriental Bangkok or The Peninsula Bangkok would best suit your needs and style, as they head the list of luxurious hotels in Bangkok.

Most of the luxurious hotels can be found along the banks of River, Chao Phraya. It would not be an exaggeration to call the Riverside area as the time-honoured area of city where the spirit of the city originally lies, and hence the hotels in this area have so much to offer to their visitors in terms of captivating and charming sights. The Riverside, with its clean and serene surroundings, is well connected with other important areas of the city through ‘Saphan Taksin’ which is a key Skytrain terminus. This area is often considered as the traditional spirit of the city and it has lots to offer to the visitors in terms of picture perfect sceneries. Some of the star hotels can also be found in major areas like Silom, Siam Square, Sukhumwit, Surawong, Phloenchit and Ratchadaphisek. One night stay in any of the star luxury hotels costs 2500 baht onwards.

In Bangkok, one can find the mid-class hotels in plenty. Most of the mid-class hotels in Bangkok are very decent and provide all the important facilities and services essential for a comfortable stay. Some of the most well-known mid-range hotels in Bangkok are Chaleena Princess Hotel Bangkok and Citadines Bangkok Sukhumvit. One can also choose to stay in 13 Coins Airport Grand which is a resort with optimum charges. Although these mid range hotels are distributed all over Bangkok, it would not be wrong to say that most of the mid range hotels are concentrated around areas like Silom, Sukhumwit, Surawong and Phloenchit. Most of the mid range hotels are reasonably priced in the range of 750 to 2000 baht per night.

Bangkok is one of the very few capital cities, which has budget hotels distributed profusely over the entire city, and which provide all basic amenities at a very low cost of 50 baht to 750 baht. Travellers looking for budget accommodations can try reasonably priced hotels like Bangkok city Inn Hotel, Diamond City Hotel, Manohra Hotel, Royal Pacific Hotel or Samran Place Hotel. Bangkok also surprises the travellers with the location of these budget hotels, which can be found almost adjacent to the star and luxury hotels. It is in complete contrast with the West where budget hotels cannot be found in the central locations. It would not be an exaggeration to say that Bangkok is one city which allows the budget travellers to enjoy and have fun to the maximum.

If you are one of those fashion conscious people who love to enjoy the nightlife, then it would be best to stay in a hotel at a central location in Bangkok like Silom, Suriwongse Road, Sukhumvit or the Soi Cowboy area. It will not only keep you in close proximity with the hustle and bustle of the city, but will also enrich your nightlife experience. If shopping is your weakness, then you can try staying in Siam Square area which is quite reputed for fun shopping. This area is quite close to Mahboonkrong (MBK) shopping mall. Both these areas can be reached through the Skytrain routes. But if visiting other parts of Thailand is your priority over holidaying in Bangkok, then it is highly recommended that you determine on a hotel near Bangkok Airport.

Any discussion on the hotels in Bangkok would be incomplete without the mention of Khao San Road which is also considered as “the centre of the backpacking universe”. This area is the undisputed favourite of the budget backpackers visiting Thailand and South East Asia. Though this area lags behind in providing connectivity to other major areas of the city, but it is still considered as the best area to stay in, if one wants to enjoy the conventional and ascetic charms of the city.

Bangkok, the land of smiles, has something in store for each and every visitor. The only pre-requisite being proper research, before determining on a hotel which best suits one’s taste, mood and budget, to make the experience surreal and unforgettable.

Traveling to Asia with travel document?

I am currently in the process of getting a greencard, all applications sent out and just waiting for it in the mail. However, due to a family emergency, I must go to China. I have gotten a travel document and have my passport and a visa. Is there anything else I need to ensure re-entrance to the US?

Answer
If you are on pending immigrant visa, and USCIS had issued you travel document (AP), your passport and AP are enough documents for re-entry to the US, however the AP is subject for scrutiny upon port of entry, and the immigration has the say they will admit you or not to the US if they found some violations in your non-immigrant status before, however, If your record is clear, then there’s nothing to worry aboutjust with your passport and AP. Good luck!

Bangkok Would Be a Fun Trip

Recently I was reading an account on the internet of a person who had taken a 20 day trip on a bicycle. The trip started in Bangkok, went down (south) the Thailand peninsula through Malaysia and Kuala Lumpur the capital city and then on to the country of Singapore which is one of the largest ship container ports in the world. He took pictures of this fabulous trip and made a journal telling about his time spent in the various places he had visited. It got me thinking about some of the places I have been.

What an adventure. What a great way to really see the country. It is a lot different than flying over the countries and not seeing anything but the airplane you are traveling on and the hotel you are staying in.

A few years ago I taught business seminars in this part of the world. Singapore is one of the places I went to. It was one of the cleanest cities I have ever seen. Singapore is also the most economically successful country in Southeast Asia and is the 17th wealthiest country in the world in terms of GDP per capital. It is an island located at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula and about 85 miles north of the Equator. You will find one of the few remaining city-states in the world and the smallest country in Southeast Asia.

Bangkok, Thailand has a city population of 5,714,737. The Baiyoke Tower II is the tallest building in Bangkok and in Thailand. Be sure to see the floating markets, the fruit carvings and robed monks while you are there. See the Grand Palace and the grounds. What a marvel! It is very close to the Equator and one of the first things you will notice is the heat, pollution and the congestion. A very safe city for you to travel in and there are many wonderful sites to see.

Kuala Lumpur or KL, Malaysia which is one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the region with a population of 7.2 million has a lot of very tall buildings. Also known as Klang Valley, it is the vocal point of Malaysia. This is the youngest Southeast Asian capital city and also is very much economically successful. Go to the historical Sultan, Abdul Samad Building at Independence Square which is located at the City Center. The Golden Triangle is where you will find most of the city’s shopping malls and the five-star hotels, party spots and the Petronas Twin Towers, one of the world’s tallest skyscrapers at 1483 feet tall with 32,000 windows.

Jakarta, Indonesia, the capital and the largest city in Indonesia with a population of 8.3 million which makes it the eleventh largest city in the world. It has a beautiful airport that welcomes you to this beautiful country. The Soekarno Hatta International Airport is beautiful and about 12 miles outside of the city. It is a difficult city to get around in and the city layout makes it even harder. The traffic is said to be the worst of anywhere in Southeast Asia. Everyone in a car seems to be on a cell phone and when I asked about them I was told that it is the only way they were able to get things done in this chaotic, congested city.

Traveling is so fun. Our perspective is expanded when we go to a new country. You get to appreciate what a beautiful world we live in and how many wonderful people and cultures there are.

Plan a fun trip today, see new people, see new countries and expand your horizons.
