Halong Bay and red dragon cruise city attractions and travel tips guide vietnam Unesco site list

Ha Long Bay has an area of around 1,553km2, including 1,960 islets, most of which are limestone. The core of the bay has an area of 334km2 with a high density of 775 islets. The limestone in this bay has gone through 500 million years of formation in different conditions and environments. The evolution of the karst in this bay has taken 20 million years under the impact of the tropical wet climate. The geo-diversity of the environment in the area has created biodiversity, including a tropical evergreen biosystem, oceanic and sea shore biosystem. Ha Long Bay is home to 14 endemic floral species and 60 endemic faunal species.

Historical research surveys have shown the presence of prehistorical human beings in this area tens of thousands years ago. The successive ancient cultures are the Soi Nh? culture around 18,000-7,000 BC, the Cái Bèo culture 7,000-5,000 BC and the H? Long culture 3,500-5,000 years ago. Ha Long Bay also marked important events in the history of Vietnam with many artifacts found in Bài Th? Mout, ??u G? Cave, Bãi Cháy.

500 years ago, Nguyen Trai praised the beauty of Ha Long Bay in his verse L? nh?p Vân ??n, in which he called it “rock wonder in the sky”. In 1962, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Vietnam listed Ha Long Bay in the National Relics and Landscapes publication. In 1994, the core zone of Ha Long Bay was listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site according to criteria vii, and listed for a second time according to criteria viii.

History of halong bay

Soi Nh? culture (16000- 5000 BC)

Located in H? Long and Bái T? Long are archaeological sites such as Mê Cung and Thiên Long. There are remains from mounds of mountain shellfish (Cyclophorus), spring shellfish (Melania), some fresh water mollusk and some rudimentary labour tools. The main way of life of Soi Nh?’s habitants included catching fish and shellfish, collecting fruits and digging for bulbs and roots. Their living environment was a coastal area unlike other Vietnamese cultures, for example, like those found in Hoà Bình and B?c S?n.

Cái Bèo culture (5000- 3000BC)

Located in H? Long and Cát Bà island, its habitants developed to the level of sea exploitation.

How was music used during the Vietnam War?

I’m doing a Senior Seminar paper on Vietnam and the music of time. My prof said I should focus on how the younger college age generation used the music to express themselves and just how they used the music in general. Anyone know any good books or sources for this?

Answer
You might consider using lyrics of the time as opposed to books and websites.

You can watch the ‘general’ cold war evolve into Vietnam in the lyrics by Dylan, Peter Paul and Mary, [some] Kingston trio, Dave Van Ronk and others of the cusp time when Vietnam was just tuning up. As the worm turned you see CW splitting as a direct result of the war, Folk fading to be replaced by predominantly anti-war lyrics, political lyrics, or ‘civil rights issue’ lyrics.

Merle Haggard, “Okie From Muskogee” and “You’re Walking on the Fighting Side of Me” emerged as a battle flag for the pro-Vietnam War factions, along with a song by an ex-Special Forces guy [name escapes me] “Silver Wings upon His Chest” about the Special Forces.

These songs were countered on the other side by “**shole From El Paso” by Kinky Friedman, “Your Flag Decal won’t Get You Into Heaven Anymore” by John Prine, songs by Steve Goodman, Kris Kristofferson, many others were openly anti-Vietnam War and made it into poplularity

The troops had their own obliquely anti-war preferences in music. We Gotta Get Out of this Place is an example. The song from the broadway musical hair, “Happy Birthday Abey Baby” became fairly popular and reflects the racial side of things. The haunting sound of “We Will All Go Down Together” by Billy Joel, sounds of helicopters in the background maybe covers the whole waterfront.

Jesse Winchester left to avoid the draft during the “Love it or Leave It” stage of things. Later he released a great album, “Learn to Love It” that’s worth a listen.

Has anyone stayed at The Spring Hotel in Saigon Vietnam?

The hotel’s on Thanh Ton Street in District 1. Any info, reviews, photos, and experiences would be great! Thanks much!

Answer
I’ve never stayed there myself, but it is in a great location and the reviews from this website are outstanding, and although you can really never trust the pictures, the rooms look great for the money. I travel to Vienam often, let us know how it is if you stay there:

Nice City Breaks

Tired of Tesco and boring supermarket shopping? If you’re looking for the perfect antidote, plus a little winter sun, take a trip to Nice, book an apartment and go shopping for food in the famous Cours Saleya.

Nice was for years primarily a winter resort. It was only in the 1920s, when the likes of Picasso and his friends started visiting the Riviera in summer, that the world followed their example. While unbroken sunshine is far from guaranteed in the winter months, the chances are you’ll enjoy some decent weather.

A short city break in Nice offers so many culinary delights that it’s worth a trip at any time of the year, although August does find the city so packed that the best restaurants may be difficult to get into. August is famously the time the French enjoy a month of relaxation, although the traffic, noise and bustle makes Nice somewhat less relaxing than normal.

Eating out offers a bewildering choice to suit all pockets in Nice. The restaurants around the market and in the Old Town have great character, and some wonderful food. You can find restaurants offering a range of Nicoise specialties while others cater for cuisines from elsewhere in France. Inevitably, food from around the world, including Vietnam, China, Thailand, Mexico and Japan, is now available too.

Several chapels and churches add to the attractions of this vibrant part of the city while at the far end is the Place Charles Felix and a large yellow-ochre house, No1 Palais Cais de Pierlas. For years, the third floor was home to Matisse, his paintings of Nice’s Baie des Anges the views from his apartment window. The likes of Matisse and Marc-Chagall, both with their own museums in the nearby suburb of Cimiez, have meant art is another key attraction in Nice – indeed, the city has more galleries and museums than any other French city outside Paris.

I’m planning a family trip to Vietnam last week of October this year. Does anybody know what the weather is at this time in diffrenet parts of country? My intial plan is to arrive to Hanoi, look arround for 1-2 days. Go to central Vietnam and take a rest on the beach resort for 3+ full days (if climate is ok – any tips? HoiAn is good?), then end at HCMC for 1-2 days.

The bigest concern is climate. Any suggestion where is best to spend our few days on the beach? Is it North, Centarl or South Vietnam?

I’m 37 with wife and 9 years doughter.

Environmental Conscious City of Puerto Princesa

The capital of Palawan is Puerto Princesa. It is the urban capital of Palaway with one hundred twenty thousand people living there. It is the second largest city in the country. It is second to Davao. Puerto Princesa is a place where the environment is green and clean. The local government also enforced that the whole city should ban guns. The people living there and the guests to the place get a penalty just for throwing a litter or spitting. A fine of two hundred pesos is given to anyone who is caught by the authorities throwing their butt of cigarette on the streets. The main avenue of Puerto Princesa is Rizal Avenue. This narrow lane stretches out from the airport in the east up to the big cathedral in the western side.

Many people even tourists in the Philippines view Puerto Princesa as the stop over before going to the reefs of corals and coves that can be seen in the other parts of Palawan. However there are still many activities that people can do in this clean city. People can visit the city museum. It is open during Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Friday from nine in the morning until noon and from 2 pm until 5 pm in the afternoon. This is located at Rizal Street in the park which provides guests a concise description of Palawan’s past history and the culture of the region. You may also see some artifacts and paintings.

Guests can go to the Crocodile Farming Institute and see live Philippine crocodiles. This place is open from Monday until Saturday from ten in the morning until five in the afternoon. This can be found inside Barangay Irawan which is twelve kilometers away from the center of the Puerto Princesa. This is the place where some scientists do actual research with the crocodiles studying their biology and the way they live. The crocodiles are given proper nutrition.

You may also visit another kind of farm in Puerto Princesa. This is the big butterfly farm which is owned by Mr. Rowell Rodriguez. This place can be found on Bunk House Street on Santa Monica. You may see thousands of butterflies here some of which are indigenous to the region. People can see the stages of metamorphosis that the butterflies go through. You can see the change from being a tiny caterpillar to a beautiful butterfly.

Visitors should also not forget to visit the Iwahig Penal Colony. This is popular for being a prison minus the bars. The prisoners can act as if they just live in one village roaming around without being in a prison cell. Most of them cultivate rice and other crops. Some do fishing. You may identify the prisoners because of the badge and the shirt they are wearing. They go back to the halls when they are eating and when they retire to sleep. The guests can buy the items like handicraft products that are made by the Iwahig prisoners in their souvenir store.

Guests can also visit the center for Vietnamese refugees. The people here are refugees from Vietnam who have formed a real community which supported by U.N. The Vietnamese sell food and some of their handicrafts.

How did the Vietnam War affect American politics? Culture? American and Vietnamese people?

thanks so much in advance.

Answer
Holy moly! That’s right out of a class assignment, isn’t it?? That’s a broad topic but here are a couple places to start:

1) Politics: because of controversies over draft age, the voting age was lowered to 18 in 1971 via the 26th Amendment. Soldiers could fight and die, but had no voice in American politics

2) Culture: Vietnam changed everything. The anit-war movement spawned a change in peoples perception of government and questioning authority. Music, clothing, hair styles, films, tv, it changed everything.

3) Americans: see above. Vietnamese check wikipedia for a novel called “The Sorrow of War” its from a Vietnamese perspective. They should have a plot synopsis to help you.

Philippines Travel Guide Getting to Know Dipolog City

The economic boom in Dipolog can be gleamed from the fact that the latest statistics show it is the richest city in Zamboanga, and without question also one of the most prosperous in the country. Long known as the gateway to Mindanao it is now serving as an example of how to become a first class city.

Tourism is one of the strengths of Dipolog City, and there are several attractions that will catch the attention of the tourist. First is the Linabo Peak, where you climb the 3,000 steps to the top. The reward is a breathtaking view of not just Dipolog but also the city of Dapitan. It is also where Catholics undergo the ritual of penitence during the period of Holy Week or Semana Santa.

Cogon Park in Dipolog City is quite simply one of the best forest revere area in the Philippines. It is a sanctuary for varied types of trees, including Rattan, Mahogany, Molave, Acacia, Narra and numerous others. It is also the place where people can mingle with all sorts of wildlife and birds.

The Fountain of Blessing, another popular attraction, was constructed as a testament to the cultural diversity that exists harmoniously in Mindanao, and at the same time is meant as a symbol or shrine for the Lord.

Another widely known tourist hotspot is Sta. Cruz. The chief attraction here is the cross, which was erected in 1905 by the Boholanos. These were the people who had made the perilous journey from Bohol to Dipolog. The cross was meant to be a symbol of thanks and prayer to the Almighty, and to this day Sta. Cruz is the sight of several prayer meetings by the Roman Catholic Church.

As with other provinces in the Philippines, Dipolog is teeming with fiestas and festivals dedicated and consecrated to saints and patrons. The penance of Catholics in Linabo Peak is called the Katkat Sakripisyo; there is also the Feast of Saint Vincent and in October the Feast of the Holy lady of the Rosary. Other festivities include the Sinulog ng Dipolog and the Araw ng Zamboanga.

Today there are several industries and businesses thriving in Dipolog and it is in part due to the effective transport system. Buses, tricycles, cars and the ubiquitous jeepney can take you anywhere in the city. The seaport makes the transport and shipping of goods and products seamless and there are ferries, boats and various shipping lines.

Historical records show that the Spaniards settled in Dipolog in 1834 and became well known for being the center of religious shrines and churches. During the American occupation beginning in 1897, the area underwent several changes, most notably growing in population and began to thrive thanks mostly to immigrants from the nearby provinces.

When the Second World War erupted, Dipolog was occupied the Japanese, and it was only after the American forces returned in 1945 was the municipality freed. In 1969, through a Republic Act by then President Ferdinand Marcos, the municipality became a city.

Peter Garant is writing Dipolog articles for his site about the Philippines.

Traveling to Asia with travel document?

I am currently in the process of getting a greencard, all applications sent out and just waiting for it in the mail. However, due to a family emergency, I must go to China. I have gotten a travel document and have my passport and a visa. Is there anything else I need to ensure re-entrance to the US?

Answer
If you are on pending immigrant visa, and USCIS had issued you travel document (AP), your passport and AP are enough documents for re-entry to the US, however the AP is subject for scrutiny upon port of entry, and the immigration has the say they will admit you or not to the US if they found some violations in your non-immigrant status before, however, If your record is clear, then there’s nothing to worry aboutjust with your passport and AP. Good luck!

Let’s say if I wanted to travel to Asia, what area would be the best for a modern, cultural experience?

If you have traveled to Asia, please tell me your experience and on a scale of 1-10 how you liked it.

Answer
If it’s your first time in Asia, possibly Thailand is a good introduction. It’s exotic enough with a developed infrastructure for tourism. If you’re adventurous, continue on to Bhutan(this has to be planned very much in advance though due to the visas needed)- with Bangkok being the easiest entrypoint into the ‘hidden kingdom’.
You’d mentioned both ‘modern’ and ‘cultural’ within the same sentence- so am assuming you’re looking for a rather developed tourism infrastructure. The above combination(Thailand + Bhutan) would really be the best in terms of exposing you to ‘Asia’ within a relatively safe and controlled environment.
Had personally enjoyed Thailand due to the ease of finding good hotels, restaurants and shopping(while being relatively exotic enough). Bhutan is the exact opposite- I’d found myself without mooisturizer and couldn’t find a decent drugstore even in Thimphu, electricity is cut off after a certain hour in parts of Bhutan and there really isn’t much by way of restaurants and entertainment. The cultural experience of Bhutan and the Himalayan scenery however, more than compensates for whatever lack of ‘modern’ pursuits.

Answer
I’ve got many friends from UK who loves the Island they called their second home – Penang (Malaysia). It may not be as posh as Singapore, or advanced like Chinese Taipei (Taiwan) or Super-standard like Japan, yet Penang is the choice of many a Global travellers as it has a balance of many things, such as a unique heritage, nature, beaches, food (yes, best area to get the most delicious yet cheap cuisine in Malaysia!), shopping (may not be as many Kuala Lumpur, but hey, many loved shopping here in Penang, as bargains are possible in local retails and markets) and it multiculturalism (Penang Hokkien, a Chinese dialect now made fame for hereditary). Also, you have a choice of accommodations from YMCA/YWCA to motels, from hotels to resorts. Trishaws are famous here, same for the unique Peranakan (Baba-Nyonya or Straits Chinese) culture as well as the famous ferry, transporting people and vehicles between Weld Quay (Island Jetty) and Butterworth (Mainland).

Visit Greenwich Village New York City and Enjoy

Greenwich Village New York City is one of the major places in the city that both residents and visitors go to make a day or evening of it. Although it has a reputation as an avant garde kind of place, it has lost some of its Bohemian feel in recent years.

Today, tourists visit Greenwich Village New York City and simply enjoy the neighborhood. If you want to go to this part of Manhattan, you will be visiting the area where the Beat Generation made their home. Among the famous residents who made Greenwich Village New York City home are the singer Bob Dylan.

The lower East Side and the Village exist in the same general area of Manhattan, the East Village east of Broadway and the village west of Broadway. It is not quite the Greenwich Village of old with its easy atmosphere, but it is still most interesting to visit.

The area caters to the adult crowd and many of the bars and clubs in this neighborhood range from cheap to quite expensive. As for food, you can find just about any food you would like from the street vendors or the many restaurants that are very common in this part of New York City.

Even though Greenwich Village New York City is not generally for children, you can take them to places that do not interact with the more adult parts of the neighborhood. One good place to go with children is Washington Square Park. And if you need a little alone time with your sweetheart, you can go there for a romantic getaway as well.

The area has an interesting history. Before European and American settlers showed up, the village was a large tobacco field tended by Native Americans. After Dutch settlers arrived, it was cleared of the crop and renamed Nordwyck.

After English settlers showed up, they forced the Dutch settlers to leave and renamed the area Grin’wich. At this time, Grin’Wich as a neighborhood was actually not part of New York City. When yellow fever swept through and wiped out a lot of population in lower Manhattan, many people moved to Grin’Wich because it had open spaces and clean air.

The history is not particularly significant when one thinks about what the village represented in the fifties to the seventies, but its twentieth-century Bohemian culture took root there as did other important parts of American history like the anti-Vietnam War movement. During this time, Greenwich Village New York City was home to a very unique culture and alternative lifestyles.

Many writers, musicians, poets and artists moved to the area for its ambiance and in search of their own fame. Businesses there were generally coffee shops and thrift shops, but they began to cater specifically to the arts crowd and made themselves accessible to that particular type of customer.

These days, the neighborhood has undergone many changes as compared to its Bohemian days. Of course, Greenwich Village New York City is still a very interesting place to go, but the borders are closer and the artsy feel and ambiance is largely absent. You can find certain areas, though, that still embody that.

Although it used to be that Spring Street was the demarcation for the Village, it is West 4th Street now. West 4th Street still has the flavor and feel of the original art scene in small areas.

This area is where you can still find some of the original art scene. In addition, this was a major epicenter of the homosexual movement about twenty years ago. The area today is a mix of straight and gay nightclubs and boutiques that supply alternative clothing popular to young people. The area is also sometimes called the New York City red light district.

West 4th Street also has the renowned street courts, training ground for many of the greatest street basketball players. The NBA and the And 1 Corporation used this area as a location for making street basketball films. The courts are across the street from the subway stop at West 4th Street and it is a popular place to stop and simply watch the athletes’ skill, especially during the summer months.

If you are planning to visit the Big Apple, be sure not to miss Greenwich Village New York City. Its uniqueness will make it a place that once you visit, you will always remember.

Answer
The answer to this question has to be very personal to yourself, because of the wording used. There is nothing inherently difficullt in the question itself, but it is something that only you can address, because it asks about your own experience. I suggest that you don’t worry about it, but give it some calm reflection, and discuss, with your family, some of the ideas about the maintenance of Vietnamese culture, in a different country.

Suggestions for single girl travel in SE Asia?

I’m a 20+ singaporean girl who just wants to get away for a little while, travelling alone if possible. I’ve never travelled overseas alone before so maybe i’ll start with southeast asia? Any suggestions on safest & good places, ways to travel, tips and such?
Thanks!
I’ve travelled with friends before. Money no problem but best if cheapest & most convenient.

Answer
Traveling alone in se asia at your age is safe enough to do as long you use common sense. From Singapore you could take the KTM train through Malaysia and into the South of Thailand. Here you could see the lovely Beach’s and islands around Phuket before continuing on to Bangkok. From there go east and into Cambodia by bus. Stop by Siem Reap and see the ancient temples of Angkor. Keep heading east through Cambodia will take you to the South of Vietnam stopping off in Saigon. Taking the train right through vietnam is the way to go and after stopping off in Hanoi you could go to Halong Bay and a visit to the northern hill tribes. From there taking a bus west and into Laos is not an option. Its unsafe and will take days going through the highlands so take a flight to Luang Prabang. Go west by bus (Laos is general takes a long time to travel via bus) and into northern Thailand for some hill tribe trekking and back down to Bangkok in where you can get a flight home. Deciding where you stop in a country is what you will sort out once there. Dont give into beggers and kids trying to sell you stuff. Take a travel guide. I used lonely planet SE Asia on a shoestring and it is very accurate and helpfull
