Exploring the Top Five ESL Destinations in Asia

If you’re considering teaching ESL in Asia, then congratulations!  You’re about to embark on an exciting new journey in your life – one that will reap major benefits in terms of your future career, finances and overall perspective on the world.

The hard part isn’t over yet though; in fact, deciding which Asian country you want to teach in can be one of the most challenging aspects of applying to the best ESL jobs.  Don’t just choose a country based on the number of ESL jobs available –instead, you should narrow your search down to countries where you’ll get the best experience possible from your teaching position.

But if you’re worried that selecting the right Asian country for you boils down to simply pointing your finger at a map of Asia, not to worry – we’ve got you covered!  In this article, we’ll explore the top five ESL destinations in Asia based on previous teacher experiences, availability of employment and benefits offered.

So grab a cup of coffee, sit back and relax – you’re about to learn which ESL destination in Asia is perfect for you!

Korea.  Korea is by far the most popular ESL destination in Asia for many reasons – one of them being the incredibly rich experience that teachers discover here!  Korea boasts some of the best ESL job opportunities, with teachers free to pick the size of school and number of students that they’ll have to teach to.

Additionally, the availability of jobs in Korea means that you’ll be able to pick where you’d like to go.  For fans of the big city, Seoul is a metropolitan paradise: with a population of over 12 million, this bustling city offers a huge range of unique cultural experiences, including shopping, museums and a glowing nightlife.  Although an ESL salary doesn’t stretch as far in this city, many teachers find the diversity of Korea’s largest city to be an exciting and rewarding experience.

Plenty of jobs are also available in the warmer climates of Daejeon, Gwangju and Busan. English is moderately spoken in Korea, and most public transport and food stores contain information in English, allowing teachers to acclimate without risking severe cultural shock.

2.       China.  The most populous country in the world is also one of the biggest providers of great ESL jobs – in fact, many ESL teachers report feeling as though they had their pick of work thanks to the vast amount of schools in this massive country.

When considering an ESL placement in China, try looking beyond Beijing and Shanghai to cities that are just as fascinating but will give you a true taste of Chinese culture.  Warmer climates and gorgeous beaches make Southern and Eastern China a delightful treat, although Northwestern China should be limited to the adventurous as it isn’t as developed as other areas of the country.

China does come with its own challenges when applying for ESL jobs, especially when it comes to work visas and permits.  Always check to see if the school or university where you’re working has the proper credentials to hire foreign teachers, as many ESL job placement agencies warn that phony school scams have been reported here.

3.       Taiwan.  Taiwan is truly a teacher’s market, as there’s a huge demand for ESL teachers all year round – and with an extremely low cost of living, ESL teachers often report leaving their posts with as much as $8,000 in savings!

Taiwan is a gorgeous island district with a fast-growing economy, which is why the demand for English teachers is so high.  Taiwan also boasts major school chains that can help initiate and train ESL teachers for life in Taiwan, which provides a great support system for those who might experience some culture shock.  The most plentiful ESL jobs here are for kindergarten teachers at chain English schools; if you have a MA, you’re qualified to teach at universities, where hours vary.

One important note is that Taiwanese classrooms are much more regimented than that of their Chinese counterparts, so expect to have your daily lessons subject to approval.  Additionally, a large emphasis is placed on memorization and recall, and you’ll be required to cover certain subjects by the school.

4.       Indonesia.  Although teaching positions aren’t as plentiful as in China or Korea, Indonesia is a great place to teach English as a second language, particularly as English is part of a national curriculum.  This means your students will already have experienced some form of English teaching.

Indonesia boasts some of the best weather in Asia, along with a delicious cuisine that’s extremely popular among ESL teachers.  Additionally, ESL teachers can expect a low cost of living (get ready to sharpen your bartering skills!) in a culture that’s genuinely fascinated by English speakers – in fact, you’ll make plenty of friends with the locals!  As a teacher, you’ll live in a middle-class neighborhood in a house with other English teachers.

The most job vacancies will be on the islands of Java and Sumatra.  According to previous ESL teachers, it’s difficult to get a job on Bali, as they prefer to hire people from within the country.

Japan.  Japanese culture is rich, exciting and full of energy – and now has never been a better time to teach English in Japan

There are plenty of ESL chain schools in Japan, which means that it’s relatively easy to find work within the 3 months of your tourist visa.  However, it’s recommended that you find your teaching post before landing in Japan, as the cost of living in this economic powerhouse is quite high; in fact, Tokyo is one of the most expensive cities in the world.  With that said, picking where you want to teach in Japan is crucial, as there are huge difference between the big and small cities (and it isn’t just size!).  Jobs are more plentiful in Tokyo and Osaka, while smaller cities will help you to stretch your salary and give you a more authentic Japanese experience.

With the wealth of ESL jobs available in all of these Asian countries, you’re bound to have the journey (and career training) of a lifetime!

Suggestions for single girl travel in SE Asia?

I’m a 20+ singaporean girl who just wants to get away for a little while, travelling alone if possible. I’ve never travelled overseas alone before so maybe i’ll start with southeast asia? Any suggestions on safest & good places, ways to travel, tips and such?
Thanks!
I’ve travelled with friends before. Money no problem but best if cheapest & most convenient.

Answer
Traveling alone in se asia at your age is safe enough to do as long you use common sense. From Singapore you could take the KTM train through Malaysia and into the South of Thailand. Here you could see the lovely Beach’s and islands around Phuket before continuing on to Bangkok. From there go east and into Cambodia by bus. Stop by Siem Reap and see the ancient temples of Angkor. Keep heading east through Cambodia will take you to the South of Vietnam stopping off in Saigon. Taking the train right through vietnam is the way to go and after stopping off in Hanoi you could go to Halong Bay and a visit to the northern hill tribes. From there taking a bus west and into Laos is not an option. Its unsafe and will take days going through the highlands so take a flight to Luang Prabang. Go west by bus (Laos is general takes a long time to travel via bus) and into northern Thailand for some hill tribe trekking and back down to Bangkok in where you can get a flight home. Deciding where you stop in a country is what you will sort out once there. Dont give into beggers and kids trying to sell you stuff. Take a travel guide. I used lonely planet SE Asia on a shoestring and it is very accurate and helpfull

3 Must See Destinations in Vietnam

Vietnam is a country with many faces and a history that reflects a long series of conflicts with its neighbours. After you have organised your travel insurance and sit down to plan your visit to Vietnam, there are plenty of things to consider and plenty of places to visit.

If you are of a historical persuasion, there will be plenty to occupy you as you travel from town to town building up a picture of a long history of conflict that has marked Vietnamese history over the past thousand years.

Alternatively, if you are an everyday tourist who is looking forward to enjoying the sights and sounds and food of an exotic country, then Vietnam will serve it up to you in platters.

Without wanting to crowd your itinerary, let’s look at a shortlist of three destinations that offer you a broad cross-section of Vietnam and which capture the essence of the country as a whole.

Halong Bay. This stunningly beautiful bay has a collection of over 3000 islands which seemed to emerge from the water like a flotilla of green emeralds. Now a world Heritage site, Halong Bay is the place to take a boat cruise so you can get closer to the spectacularly beautiful beaches and grottoes that are dotted around in their hundreds. If you choose the right cruise, you will also have time to explore the magnificent caves which have been illuminated for the benefit of tourists. After that you can relax on one of the many sandy beaches and soak in the atmosphere.
Nha Trang. There are some wonderful contrasts in this indisputably beautiful town. On the one hand you will witness a bustling, Metropolis driven by commerce, and on the other Western-style resort town with hotels and restaurants strung out along a beautiful beach. Nha Trang will keep you busy with boat trips and scuba diving both popular pastimes. Add to that the famous mud baths all surrounded by dozens of historic sites and you have the complete tourist package in one place.
Phong Nha cave. Located in the Ke Bang National Park, these 400 million-year-old caves are the oldest in Asia. To get there in need to take a charter boat which departs early in the morning arriving back late in the afternoon. After travelling the 55 km you’ll be able to marvel at the limestone formations as you wind your way through the kilometres of underground passageways. The main underground cavern is nearly 8 km long and you will be able to choose from 14 other caves to explore in what must be one of the wonders of Vietnam. The caves are often closed during November and December during the rainy season, so make sure you schedule your visit outside of these months.

These three must see destinations are not generally on the itinerary of most tourists. Do yourself a favour and make sure you include at least one of these exciting destinations on your list of must see places. Most important of all, make sure yourholiday insurance is arranged well in advance.

I want to travel to Asia for 6 months: HK, Singapore, Taiwan, Malaysia: Any restrictions for US Passport?

I am planning a trip to Asia exploring different areas such as HK, Taiwan, Japan, Singapore, and Malaysia. Length of stay per state or Country is around 1-2 months. Can I be away from US for over 6 months? Any Visa requirements into any of these countries and is there any the Length of Stay restrictions? Can I work while I am exploring the city? What do I need to do to make this trip possible? Thank you for your help!

Answer
You do not need visa to visit all the five countries you mentioned above.

Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Malaysia – visa free for up to 90 days
Taiwan – visa free for up to 30 days

However the above is subject to the following :

- for social visits ONLY
- validity of your passport must be more than 6 months
- possess valid return ticket or ticket to a third country
- able to show proof of having enough fund to sustain your stay if asked

No, you can’t work in all these countries. If you choose to work during your visits, you’ll have to take the risks of being caught by the authorities in these countries.

What are some social and political outcomes of the vietnam war?

I’m working on a paper for my history class, and I need a few sources on the political and social outcomes of the vietnam war, including information on how it came to a close. Please include good sources.

Answer
The Vietnam War (now referred to as the Second Indochina War, 1959-1975) is probably one of the best documented wars in world history. The are many many good sources on the war and the topics you need for your paper.

I would start with Stanley Karnow, Vietnam. Probably the definitive narrative book on what happened politically, particularly from the perspective of the United States. A.J. Langguth’s Our Vietnam is also very good in providing narrative detail from both sides. These were top-notch journalists who became historians of the war.

If you want a hindsight view, Robert McNamara wrote two extremely well-written and useful books on the war: In Retrospect and Argument Without End. The latter provides a dialogue between the principals on both sides conducted in the late 1990s. McNamara there goes into great detail what the effects of the war were on both Vietnam and the United States, and provides some lessons to be derived from this tragedy. For a shorter broad overview with new information, you should pick up Turley’s Second Indochina War.

My take on your question would highlight the following. Over 3.8 million people Vietnamese died in the war. Many more were affected by birth defects or psychological trauma as a result of the war. Families were torn apart when elites in the South fled to the US. The War caused the dislocation of thousands more fleeing in boats to refugee camps.

The US lost 58,000 soldiers. Many more wounded. They were not given honor guards or ticker tape parades. They came home and nobody wanted to talk about it. People talked more at the massacre at My Lai and civilian deaths from bombing of North Vietnam than they did about the sacrifices of the American soldiers, sailors and airmen.

Politically, the US suffered substantial damage. The US violated international agreements it pledged to respect in the creation and support of South Vietnam, and then was forced to walk away from that ally. Despite assurances given to President Thieu privately, the US just abandoned South Vietnam to its fate, a conventional assault from the DRV.

The US pledged to multilateralism but then acted primarily unilaterally in prosecuting the war to the horror of its European allies. Congress voted continually against the war from 1969 on, eviscerating what the President was attempting to do in negotiating the best deal it could. The loss in the war substantially eroded our Cold War posture vis-a-vis the Soviet Union and hamstrung Ford and Carter in pursuing containment strategies. The war unleashed a very powerful Vietnam that was able to resist even an invasion from China in 1978.

There are many many more outcomes of the war, all covered in the books I mentioned and others.

Traveling with Kids – Top 5 Destinations

No matter what your circumstances in life, there is bound to come a time when you want to travel with your family on a long vacation. Travelling with the kids can cause anxiety and sheer fright in some parents, not to mention the kids themselves! But it doesn’t have to be all gloom and doom.

There are plenty of positives when a family travels together, things like bonding and sharing long conversations that you might otherwise miss at home. Then of course there is the excitement of discovering something together. Just remember to take out a good family travel insurance policy, not to cater for any potential family fights, but said that give you peace of mind seek and enjoy a holiday!

So let’s have a look at some destinations that you in your kids can look forward to travelling to with anticipation and a happy heart.

It Doesn’t Have To Drive You Mad. What about avoiding driving completely? A family with the kids does not have to involve a long road trip, you could always try a cruise to nowhere. These days cruise companies offer five or seven-day cruises sailing in circles around the Pacific. It might sound a little crazy at first but this gives you the opportunity to relax completely or without the pressure of planning any activities or shopping for meals. Everything is available for you in the one place, and all the work has already been done. Kids are well looked after, and so will you be.
Fiji. It’s a rare thing for a family friendly tourist destination to actually be an entire country. But that is simply what Fiji is. The friendly nature of the warm hearted people coupled with the idyllic stretches of palm fringed beaches and the environmentally sensitive resorts provide any family with the destination they are certain to enjoy.
Samoa. Despite some recent problems with the politics and the weather, Samoa is still a family friendly destination that couples the unspoiled landscapes and wonderfully warm and friendly people. It is no wonder that families feel welcome here as they temporarily become part of an island nation built around families.
Vanuatu. One of Australia’s closest neighbours with a curiously French twist, Vanuatu is another small Pacific nation whose size and tourist orientation make it a destination families clamour for. With a mixture of Polynesian and French cultures, there are hundreds of resorts to choose from which offer family friendly accommodation including activities for children and adventure playgrounds for the family to share.
Vietnam. This might appear an unlikely choice as a family friendly destination, but Vietnam offers a myriad of choices that all the family can enjoy. From palm fringed protected beaches to unspoiled lagoons with deep green clear water, the Vietnamese people will welcome you all with open arms. Some of the unspoiled and as yet underdeveloped areas offer a level of safety valued by families from around the world.

Now you know that you are no longer locked into local holiday with the children, you can start to plan your next overseas trip with your kids in mind. If you plan well enough in advance and take advantage of the peace of mind offered by a family travel insurance package, you are probably starting a new tradition of family travel together.

Asia Travel – Good Airlines to travel on?

I’m going to be traveling in through Asia (China, Vietnam, Thailand) in April. Any advice on airlines to use or to stay away from?
I’m thinking of booking a flight with China Southern Airlines from Guilin to Guangzhou and Guangzhou to Hanoi. From Hanoi to Bangkok, I am thinking of using Air Asia.

Any input on these airlines?

Answer
depending on your destination and your budget really. You can’t just pick any airline not keeping in mind where their hub is located and where they fly to.
Other than that, generally speaking, given the details provided of your trip i would really stick to the following:
(although a more precise rating could be given based on the class you’re travelling).

Singapore (a little expensive but worth it), Thai, Malaysian are definitely top notch for travelling through (to and from) south east asia (top service and good amenities and decent food) give their excellent cabin crew. Cathay Pacific also has an excellent network and is far reaching throughout mainland china ( a little expensive though), definitely known for its good and attentive service level. Not too sure about Dragon air, which is a regional carrier now owned by Cathay, should offer connections within China.

China airlines offers excellent value and attentive service but limited destinations, namely to and from Taiwan (not too sure about their flight safety record). As far as the north asian region, i would suggest (according to your destination whether korea or japan) either ASIANA or ANA (i think they both offer overall better service compared to the national carrier counterparties).

i would avoid vietnam airlines, air china, china southern and china eastern (especially cattle class, not because flying in economy but because of the problems you encounter with their staff: poor command of english, attitude issues in dealing with customer requests, awful customer service)

For those with a historical eye, make sure you visit The War Remnants Museum which will not only remind you of the troubles which the city has had to overcome in just a few short years, but will also give you an idea of the perspective of the war held by the Communist regime.
Hanoi. Situated on the banks of the Red River, Hanoi will entrance you in a way that very few other Southeast Asian cities can do. The small art museum will give you an insight into the depths of culture that has laid largely hidden from the West and don’t forget to take in a performance at the Hanoi Opera for a unique look at Vietnamese musical heritage.
Hue. This grand city was once the capital of many Vietnamese emperors but many parts were destroyed during an armed offensive in 1968, most notably the Imperial Citadel. Historically, the ruins are still visible and are well worth a visit.
Sapa. The Highlands of Vietnam are less well known to Western visitors, but the sheer beauty of the jungles, waterfalls and sweeping scenery are one of the true delights in visiting Vietnam.
Dalat. This wonderful city reminds us of the French influence in the development of Vietnam especially in the years after the Second World War.

Vietnam in Asiaamp#039s Top 3 most popular destinations

“While Thailand has long been a British favorite, neighboring East Asian countries have experienced a dramatic rise in search recently and we are starting to see a popularity shift into places like Vietnam,” says Nadine Hallak, Travel Expert for Cheapflights UK.

Price conscious travelers will find value in all three destinations. Vietnam is the easternmost country on the Indochina Peninsula. Bordered by China, Laos and Cambodia, the country features two World Natural Heritage sites and six World biosphere reserves. Vietnam is ranked 16th in biological diversity, and 16 percent of the world’s species can be found here, including 794 aquatic invertebrates and 2,458 sea fish. While tourism has grown steadily to almost 4 million visitors over the years, prices remain relatively low.

Malaysia is made up of three main regions covering over a thousand individual islands. West and East Malaysia are separated by the South China Sea and share a largely similar landscape of coastal plains that rise to often densely forested hills and mountains. 38 designated marine parks are home to shipwrecks, coral gardens, black-tip reef sharks, barracuda, groupers, parrotfish, puffer and angelfish are common sights.

With a population of 230 million, Indonesia is the world’s fourth most populous country. Only about 6,000 of its 17,508 islands that stretch along the equator are inhabited. After Brazil, Indonesia supports the world’s second highest level of biodiversity. The Komodo National Park, the Banda Sea, Raja Ampat and the Bunaken National Marine Park feature some of the best scuba diving in the region.

“Travelers are more up to going the distance not only in flight time, but also in adventure. Whether it’s helping to feed an economy that’s fighting to grow or getting better acquainted with one that’s already booming,” said Hallak. “Perhaps the two most interesting trends to come out of the recession are a heightened global conscience and a thirst for exploration.”

Where should I go for an Asian experience Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam?

I’m currently planning my first (short) trip to SE Asia and so far I included Singapore, Hong Kong plus another destination however not sure should I go to Malaysia, China, Thailand or any other? can you advise based on your experiences?
btw : I only have 10-12 days

Answer
Well, since China has had influence over all of Asia, going to China will definitely give you an “Asian experience” however, all of these places can give you an Asian experience, because they’re all Asian.

Hong Kong and Singapore are really modern. They’re not quite the “Asian experience” from the perspective of someone who likes to visit temples, see traditional dances, and experience Asian culture.

If you feel that is missing from your itinerary, the Vietnam stands out as a good place to go to balance out your trip. With Thailand, there is also a lot of culture, but it is also possible to stay in Bangkok (which still has a much richer culture than Singapore) to complete your Asian city tour. You can also experience culture in Malaysia, but once again, if that’s not what you are interested in, you could stay in Kuala Lumpur. It all depends on what kind of “Asian experience” you are looking to have…

**Ramze, if you read his information, he states that he is considering going to China. I’ve been to China, and the food is quite good. It’s the most famous Asian cuisine worldwide! It’s extremely popular. You are obviously too biased and uneducated to give any decent advice. I didn’t say Thailand was bad. It’s a fine choice, but if someone talks about “experiencing Asia” summed up in one country, it’s China.

Best countries to travel to in June/July? Cheap places in southeast asia?

I am planning on traveling this summer to southeast asia, australia, and hawaii.
I am trying to decide which country/countries I want to visit in Southeast asia. I was thinking of Bali or the Philippines.
Please recommend me some countries that are cheap, safe, and fun! Does not have to be in Southeast Asia but I prefer it to be. And I’ve already been to Thailand.
(I am a female in my early 20s and will be traveling with my younger 13 year old sister)

Answer
It will be monsoon season in many parts of South-East Asia (Vietnam, Lao, Thailand & Cambodia), so I would recommend Bali or other islands in Indonesia such as Lombok or the Gilli Islands. There is plenty to do in Bali, such as beaches, water park, wild-life park, rafting, cycling and soft adventure as well as excursions to the north – it is well set-up for tourists – Lombok and the Gilli Islands are more laid-back and a perfect place to kick-back and relax.
Have a great trip!
