The taxi, bus and MRT are options to get to the city from the airport. However if you carry a lot of luggage it is not suggested to take the MRT from the airport to the city as there is no dedicated space for luggage and no reserved seating (unlike Hong Kong’s Airport Express or Tokyo’s Narita Express). Further the train stops a dozen times before reaching the downtown core. Taking a cab for parties with more than 3 members is the best option here.

My trip to the Strand Hotel (Rates from $160 nett including breakfast) in Bencoolen Street cost $20 on a busy friday afternoon, including ERP and airport charges. If you arrived late in the afternoon , it is suggested that you explore the surrounding area of the hotel first rather than venturing into areas such as HarbourFront or ClarkeQuay. The intersection adjacent of the hotel leads you to two shopping areas. If you head left, you’ll find the CityLink Mall, Suntec City, Raffles City and Marina Centre. If you head right, you’ll find yourself in Singapore’s famous Orchard Road Shopping Belt. I opted for the latter, and got there via the Bras Basah Station on the newly opened Circle Line. The cost of the trip was $2.10 per person before redeeming the $1 refundable deposit.

A transit to the North South Line in the busy Dhoby Ghaut station is required though to get to the middle of the shopping belt, but at a late friday afternoon, it was a better option than taking a taxi. Taking a taxi in Singapore can both be cheap or expensive. On a Sunday, as I will explain latter, it is a good value, but on rush hour (4-7 PM) it can get expensive. A trip from my hotel to ION Orchard cost $8 by taxi on rush hour, as there is the $3 CBD Pickup Charge, 30% Rush Hour Surcharge and ERP added to the base fare of the taxi ride.

Anyways, if you go by MRT there are three stations to stop to shop in Orchard Road. Dhoby Ghaut is right under the Plaza Singapura Shopping Centre, whileSomerset gets you to 313@Somerset, Orchard Central and The Centrepoint. Orchard Station is convenient for Ngee Ann City, Lucky Plaza, Paragon, Wisma Atria, ION Orchard, Shaw Place, Tangs, Wheelock Place and Far East Plaza as well as malls located on Tanglin Road. I suggest stopping at Orchard first, as you will spend plenty time strolling along the shopping malls there.

For cheap eats, especially if you’re looking for Halal Singaporean Food is Far East Plaza. The Upper Level provides a couple of eateries that are Halal and $5 will give you a full stomach. The winner though is Hainanese Delicacy , an outlet that only serves chicken rice. Just request the waiter your desired chicken part (e.g. Breast) and the serving style (Roasted or Steamed) and in 2 mins the meal is served. The place is always crowded and sometimes closes early.

A portion is only $4, but you’ll likely yearning for more. For shopping books, which are a good value in Singapore Tour from a Southeast Asian perspective, go to Borders in Wheelock Place or Kinokuniya in Ngee Ann City. The later offers a huge selection of Japanese books and magazines. After exploring the many shops in ION Orchard, stroll your way to the other shopping complexes. 313@Somerset is a great place to spend your cash, especially with a HMV and Uniqlo outlet in the mall.

Hungry for dinner? Food Republic offers dining options that suit any hungry tastebuds at affordable prices. To get back to the hotel, I suggest taking a bus opposite 313@Somerset. Hop on any bus that lead to Bras Basah Road for $1 and get off at the Hotel Rendevouz stop, which is only 50 m from rest from shopping heaven.

Halong Bay A Mesmerizing Experience

Halong Bay in northern Vietnam is located 170km to the east of Hanoi. The bay is famed for its picturesque scenery and unique rock formations. The array of limestone islands silhouetted on the bay’s panoramic views is a truly memorable experience.

According to ancient tradition, at a time when the Vietnamese were engaged in arduous struggles with Chinese aggressors, the sympathetic gods provided a family of dragons to assist the Vietnamese in defending their homeland. The dragons proceeded to spew out jade and jewels, and these stones are said to have transformed into the islands occupying the bay, joining together to create a huge barrier against the aggressors.  The people who were aided by the dragons were able to safeguard their lands and would go on to form the nation of Vietnam. The name ‘Halong’ was given to the place where the mother dragon came down to the earth.

It is in fact the EGOS of these people that saw the Vietnam war go on for 15 bloody years and now in Iraq for almost 5 years.

Remember the US won WW11 in LESS THAN 5 YEARS .

Like in Vietnam ,there are always ups and downs in the Iraqi war with some postive results in the last month or so (ONLY MILITARY NOT THE ALL IMPORTANT POLITICAL PROGRESS) but make no mistake that like in Vietnam the US is in the middle of a CIVIL WAR and there will be NO VICTORY but a hell of a lot more body bags used.

Over 3500 US soldiers and over 400,000 innocent Iraqi civilians have died for NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING ..

I am currently in the process of getting a greencard, all applications sent out and just waiting for it in the mail. However, due to a family emergency, I must go to China. I have gotten a travel document and have my passport and a visa. Is there anything else I need to ensure re-entrance to the US?

If you are on pending immigrant visa, and USCIS had issued you travel document (AP), your passport and AP are enough documents for re-entry to the US, however the AP is subject for scrutiny upon port of entry, and the immigration has the say they will admit you or not to the US if they found some violations in your non-immigrant status before, however, If your record is clear, then there’s nothing to worry aboutjust with your passport and AP. How was music used during the Vietnam War?

I’m doing a Senior Seminar paper on Vietnam and the music of time. My prof said I should focus on how the younger college age generation used the music to express themselves and just how they used the music in general. Anyone know any good books or sources for this?

You can watch the ‘general’ cold war evolve into Vietnam in the lyrics by Dylan, Peter Paul and Mary, [some] Kingston trio, Dave Van Ronk and others of the cusp time when Vietnam was just tuning up. As the worm turned you see CW splitting as a direct result of the war, Folk fading to be replaced by predominantly anti-war lyrics, political lyrics, or ‘civil rights issue’ lyrics.

Merle Haggard, “Okie From Muskogee” and “You’re Walking on the Fighting Side of Me” emerged as a battle flag for the pro-Vietnam War factions, along with a song by an ex-Special Forces guy [name escapes me] “Silver Wings upon His Chest” about the Special Forces.

These songs were countered on the other side by “**shole From El Paso” by Kinky Friedman, “Your Flag Decal won’t Get You Into Heaven Anymore” by John Prine, songs by Steve Goodman, Kris Kristofferson, many others were openly anti-Vietnam War and made it into poplularity

The troops had their own obliquely anti-war preferences in music. We Gotta Get Out of this Place is an example. The song from the broadway musical hair, “Happy Birthday Abey Baby” became fairly popular and reflects the racial side of things. The haunting sound of “We Will All Go Down Together” by Billy Joel, sounds of helicopters in the background maybe covers the whole waterfront.

Jesse Winchester left to avoid the draft during the “Love it or Leave It” stage of things. Later he released a great album, “Learn to Love It” that’s worth a listen.

Did any Soviet foot soldiers help Vietnam during the war with America?

I know it was mainly the Viet-Cong and NVA fighting against the Americans, but I also heard somewhere that there were Soviet commanders and foot-soldiers fighting with the Viet-Cong and NVA against America. Also didn’t Australia have a major presence of soldiers helping America in Vietnam?

There were no Soviet foot soldiers fighting in Vietnam, and the only Chinese foot soldiers were Nationalist (Taiwanese) Chinese soldiers fighting for the U.S. The Soviet Union provided limited aid and military advisers to the North Vietnamese until about 1967, the time at which Soviet support dropped off almost completely. Australia had a force of soldiers fighting but it was small compared to American and ARVN military power.

There were no Soviet foot soldiers fighting in Vietnam, and the only Chinese foot soldiers were Nationalist (Taiwanese) Chinese soldiers fighting for the U.S. The Soviet Union provided limited aid and military advisers to the North Vietnamese until about 1967, the time at which Soviet support dropped off almost completely. Australia had a force of soldiers fighting but it was small compared to American and ARVN military power.

Bangkok is a great city for shopping so make sure you bring your credit card with you. There are street markets all over the city along with air conditioned department stores and local designer boutiques. China Town is a hive of activity that is just like a maze, here you’ll find gold shops, fabric shops, traditional Chinese medicines and street after street of market stalls. Night-time shopping at Patpong market will provide you with all your presents to take home, souvenirs, fake brands, watches and clothes.

If you are planning on traveling for a period of time then Thailand is not the only Asian country with lots to offer. From Bangkok it is easy to take a plane to Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam and they are all fascinating places to visit. If you don’t want to fly then you can always jump on the train. You can take a train from Bangkok to many other Asian cities, travelling by train is very cheap and sleepers provide comfort and a good chance of meeting other travelers.
