What was America’s involvement in the Vietnam war from the 1940s to the 1970s?

How and why did the United States become engaged in military actions in Vietnam? What was the significance and the ultimate consequences of the Vietnam war?

Answer
Initially, the US got involved helping to support the Viet-Minh fighting against the Japanese occupation of IndoChina during WWII. After the end of WWII, the US supplied and operationally assisted France in trying to take back IndoChina from the Viet-Minh and other groups.

The period from 1954 until 1963 the US publicly had military advisors in South Vietnam. In 1954, the US began to support the emporer Bao Dai until the US had him ousted in a military coup d’etat in 1955 by the Diem brothers, who in turn were ousted in another military coup d’etat in 1963.

From 1963 to 1969 the US sent in at least 500,000 combat troops and other personnel. From 1969 to 1973, US policy was “Vietnamization), meaning the South Vietnamese were to take on responsibility for the ground war. US participation officially ended in 1973, but the North Vietnam invaded and conquered South Vietnam in April, 1975. This brought the war to an end.

Related issues are Communists coming to power in Cambodia (the Khmer Rouge under Pol Pot) and in Laos. Vietnam invaded Cambodia in 1979 toppling the Khmer Rouge and installing their own government, ending the genocide there.

The Vietnam War was a significant event in US history-especially for the baby-boomer generation. It probably led to the beginning of the end of the US as a political, economic, and military power. It divided the country and continues to do so, especially among baby-boomers.

Baby-boomers are probably the most spoiled, pampered, self-serving, egocentric generation this country has ever produced. They make up the majority of the political, cultural, economic, and academic leadership in the US. Their biggest crime however, is their negligence of their parents and their children.

if you want to know all these, The best place to visit is Angkor wat temple in Siem Reap. and the beach in Shiahanouk Ville, very natural beach, alot of places to visit but it depend on the time you have, if you want to see the VERY natural mountain or forest it takes you so much time but i can recommend you somewhere like Pailin in Battambang Province(waterfall, Blue Mountain ….), Rattanakiri and Modulkir (waterfall, natural mountain, wildlife….) very very green country.

acutally there is no difficult rule for you to be aware of. The big thing is you have to aware of is accused of being sex with children.

More Cool Socks From Hot Sox

Being familiar with HOT SOX, it would actually come as a surprise that the foundation of such a strong company can be associated with Cape Cod. But this is what exactly happened with Ellie Gordon, the founder of the company itself.

The earlier part of the 1970’s saw a lot of hippie culture. Hippies were quite prominent during this time, and they were very present during the Vietnam War, participating in peace marches and such. But during this time, Ellie and her husband, Mark, decided to get away from the disturbance one weekend and visited some friends in Cape Cod.

Ellie and Mark took Ellie’s sister and her husband with them as well. The friends that they visited were actually artists in their own right, profiting quite a lot from tie-dying shirts in the region. At the time, the tie-dyed shirts came with appliquéd fruit. It was actually the prevalent fashion statement back in the 70’s.

Going home from the trip, the foursome began talking with each other, brainstorming at how they could earn as much money as their tie-dying friends from Cape Cod. The foursome agreed that they had the brains and the talent to conceptualize a great-selling idea of their own as well. From much brainstorming, they decided to go with socks because the socks at the time were actually pretty boring. Thus, they took it upon themselves to develop that pizzazz that the typical pair of socks needed.

The foursome decided on the production of silk-screened opaque socks for two simple reasons. The first is that this type of socks was not expensive to come by, so capital would not be too much of a problem. The second reason is that the process of silk-screening the socks is not too complicated to carry out, and can be done during the short hours after work. This means that no one would be forced to quit the jobs they hold during the day.

With that problem solved, they then moved on to the issue of finding a name for their company. At the time, the phrase ‘hot pants’ was popularly used in the fashion industry, so Ellie herself suggested that they go by the name of HOT SOX. The name stuck ever since.

Throughout the years, Ellie and her entourage of skilled craftsmen have continuously impressed the lingering market with the very hot designer socks they have been producing. They have also released a lot of trademark designs in the market as well.

That ever-so-popular design of King Kong hanging onto the Empire State Building is actually one of the pioneer designs ever released by HOT SOX. With superb quality in mind, it is no wonder HOT SOX has become the large empire that it is today.

Films & books about Vietnam?? (country & culture, not necessary the US war)?

Hi there,
I’m preparing to move to Hanoi, Vietnam later this month and I was hoping somebody could suggest some films, whether Vietnamese or American or other, that may give me a better feel for the Vietnamese culture, the country and the people. I’m interested in any books about Vietnam as well, though it doesn’t all have to be only about the US War…

thanks!

Recessions Require Leadership From the Core

When the mood in our workplace, at home, or in society in general is subdued, the value of great leaders becomes apparent.

How often have you seen individuals who have been promoted from one level to the next and the next and the next based on need and some extraordinary skills become insecure, controlling, stressed out and un-approachable, especially when their leadership is most needed?

How often have you lived through situations where decisions are being announced without a detailed explanation or reason why?

Have you been craving for leaders who are authentic, well balanced between factual knowledge and emotional intelligence?

Leading from the core is one of those traits that take a lot of development tobecome good at. To get into the right frame of mind, here is a little story I received today from Tom Mathews:

As a leader, do you honor and appreciate the power of WE? Do you stop to thank and recognize the members of your team? Do you consistently show an attitude of gratitude?

I recently read a great story about Captain Charles Plumb, a graduate from the Naval Academy, whose plane, after 74 successful combat missions over North Vietnam, was shot down. He parachuted to safety, but was captured, tortured and spent 2,103 days in a small box-like cell.

After surviving the ordeal, Captain Plumb received the Silver Star, Bronze Star, the Legion of Merit and two Purple Hearts, and returned to America and spoke to many groups about his experience and how it compared to the challenges of every day life.

Shortly after coming home, Charlie and his wife were sitting in a restaurant. A man rose from a nearby table, walked over and said, “You’re Plumb! You flew jet fighters in Vietnam from the aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk. You were shot down!”

Surprised that he was recognized, Charlie responded, “How in the world did you know that?” The man replied, “I packed your parachute.” Charlie looked up with surprise. The man pumped his hand, gave a thumbs-up, and said, “I guess it worked!”

Charlie stood to shake the man’s hand, and assured him, “It most certainly did work. If it had not worked, I would not be here today.”

Charlie could not sleep that night, thinking about the man. He wondered if he might have seen him and not even said, “Good morning, how are you?” He thought of the many hours the sailor had spent bending over a long wooden table in the bottom of the ship, carefully folding the silks and weaving the shrouds of each chute, each time holding in his hands the fate of someone he didn’t know.

Plumb then began to realize that along with the physical parachute, he needed mental, emotional and spiritual parachutes. He had called on all these supports during his long and painful ordeal.

As a leader, how many times a day, a week, a month, do we pass up the opportunity to thank those people in our organization who are “packing our parachutes”?

I can relate to this story, not only because I was a military jet aviator myself and have been with the guys who packed my parachute. I also relate to it because this core from which true, successful leadership comes from is a core of empathy, caring, praise, character, and appreciation.

To develop these traits and live them everyday in every situation, no matter how bad the problem, how bad the economy, how bad the sales, and how bad the approaching recession, a certain attitude is required.

This attitude assumes that every person is good, trying as hard as he or she can, and is willing to improve, given the proper guidance. As the leader we want to be this guide who provides support, creates the environment to excel, and is willing to take the blame and responsibility when things don’t work out as we had planned. That is distinctly different from a manager who takes a leaders’ vision and strategy and converts it into processes, policies, directives, and rules.

If you like to learn more about the development of this core, I recommend Henry Cloud’s book ‘Integrity’, Jim Collins ‘Good to Great’, Richard Boyartzis ‘Resonant Leadership’, and John Kotter’s ‘Our Iceberg is melting’. If you learn better with a story, you might want to start with Steve Farber’s ‘Radical Leap’.

In any case, ask yourself what you can do to develop a positive, resonating, caring core from which you operate, help other people succeed, and conduct your daily life. As you develop this core, you will enable yourself and those around you to come through adversity, recession, health issues, and the challenges of living and working with others with flying colors.

Don’t forget, they are packing your parachute – so you better treat them well and appreciate their focus and accuracy, so you will live another day and have a chance to be the beacon they require for direction in life.

How did the vietnam war affect us?

I’m doing a report on the affects of the vietnam war for social studies. I need help. Any suggestions?

Answer
Decreased confidence in the presidency. People were fighting an undeclared war. The term “police action” was coined to cover this.

Increased visibility for young activists.

The Summer of Love. There’s always been a cultural divide between parents and children — the “generation gap.” It widened. The younger generation this time didn’t see the point of the war in Vietnam. The older generation was spouting “we served in WWII and Korea, and now it’s your turn to do your duty to your country.” The younger generation embraced alternative lifestyles, music, drugs.

Eventually, 18-year-olds got to vote.

How much money would 2 people need to travel within Asia for 1 month and a half?

To include travel within countries / food / hostels or hotels

Answer
The average daily cost for budget travel ( 2 persons ) are as follows :

USD10 – 3 meals a day ( street food or ordinary restaurants )’

USD15-USD20 – accomodation ( hostels or budget hotels ), if you want a star rated hotel ( 3 star ), just top up another USD20-USD30.

USD15 – transportation ( public transportation for local travels, taxis excluded )

For international travel – depends on your destinations. In South East Asia, you can travel from Singapore all the way to Vietnam and even to China ON LAND, if you choose this option and take public buses / trains, you would be able to save quite a big sum from your budge

Of course, in big cities, everything is more expensive and in smaller towns, things are very cheap ( by western standard ) and certain countries are cheaper to travel than the others example Japan , things there are expensive even by western standard while in developing countries like Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar , you probably don’t even have to spend the amount that i stated above.

A Nice Travel Guide to Singapore From Rhino Car Hire Singapore

Singapore has the busiest port in the world and is an affluent and commercially vibrant country.

The city is split up into areas which include the main business district, Chinatown and Little India. The many races and religions that co-exist in Singapore make it a dynamic and cosmopolitan place.

This is also reflected in Singaporean cuisine. Dining out in Singapore is an unforgettable experience and the combination of Chinese, Malay and Indian foods means that you can taste the most sumptuous oriental cooking here. In fact Singapore is world famous for its cooking so try as many restaurants as you can. If you don’t have a big budget, don’t worry. Food sold by street vendors is often superb too.

Although Malay is the official language of Singapore its importance as south east Asian business centre means that English is widely spoken. However, the local dialect has come to be known as ‘Singlish’ because of the combination of Chinese, Malay and English dialects.

Car hire Singapore is a good way to get around as the road system is not overly complicated. It is possible to drive from Singapore to the peninsular part of Malaysia but check with your rental company about whether you are allowed to do so.

Singapore is known as the Garden City and in its huge international airport alone there is a whole range of flora and fauna to enjoy.

Changi airport has three terminals and is a hub for airlines such as Tiger Air and JetStar.

Car hire Changi is the best way to start your journey through Singapore if you are entering Singapore from abroad. The Singapore roads are maintained perfectly, roads rules are adhered to and driving is on the left.

At night Singapore is dazzling with skyscrapers lit up and many multi coloured lights around the city harbour. Around the Singapore River you will find a collection of theatres and spectacular looking buildings and this is a good place to go for a night out.

Singapore is the second most crowded country is the world with four million people packed onto this relatively small island.

Singapore has a reputation for being boring due to the strict laws there which lead visitors to describe it as the Switzerland of Asia and ‘Disneyland with the death penalty’.

Travellers to Singapore should exercise caution as the country has some fairly draconian rules which include not being allowed to chew gum in public, a ban on public displays of affection and a death penalty policy for drug use.

Bizarrely enough it is also illegal to bring any pirated goods, pornography or publications by Jehovah’s Witnesses into Singapore. You have been warned!

However the benefit of these strict laws is that Singapore has virtually no crime.

In Singapore the climate can be your worst enemy with high temperatures and humidity while months between November and January are the rainiest.

Rhino have main pickup locations throughout Singapore including some of the hotels and the main airport called Changi Airport.

Suraya Stevens is the south east Asia correspondent for Rhino car hire and has written various articles including Car Hire Singapore and Changi Airport.

How to Find Motivation and Inspiration From Your Heroes

Copyright (c) 2008 Mind Body Spirit Central, LLC

A few years ago, I wrote down this quote in my journal…

“Everyday of your life, from the cradle to the grave, you will face challenges and obstacles. It’s a law of the universe in which we live!” – Keith A. Shaw

It IS a fact of life that all of you are going to experience challenges, difficulties and temporary setbacks when you take action toward your goals – in any endeavor.

Yes, both you and me. In fact, I have developed quite a list of the challenges I have faced in this lifetime!

For example, you may encounter people (I call them “Drama Queens and Melodramatic Men”) who are always ready to criticize, create chaos, distract or detract you from your success quest due to their weaknesses of jealousy, hidden agendas or lack of purpose in their own lives.

Or, your success quest may take longer and be tougher than you ever imagined. And, the going may get so difficult and challenging that you may want to just give up.

Or, you may not have the courage and confidence to ask for what you want.

And, as much as we plan and guard against setbacks, we sometimes let them get out of our control, so that they control us – mentally, physically and emotionally – instead of us controlling them. When these tough times occur, the person who faces the time, head on, when everything seems against them; finds courage within them; drives away all destructive thinking and negative habits; and upholds their self respect and integrity is MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED.

We have all heard the simple saying, “Where there is a will, there is a way.” The reason is that the will CAN make a way – when given the chance to secure the assistance of the things that lead to success. The greater degree your will is developed, the higher the way to which it will rise. When everything looks gloomy and discouraging, that is the exact time to show what you are made of.

One of the things that works to motivate and inspire me, time and time again, is hearing and reading about the inspirational stories of others – particularly my heroes, both from my youth and the present day.

A few years ago, I had the thrilling pleasure of meeting and having dinner with one of my childhood heroes, Rocky Bleier. For those of you who are not familiar with who he is, here’s an overview of him and the obstacles he overcame.

Rocky attended the University of Notre Dame where he was a standout running back for the Fighting Irish’s Football Team. Now this was in the late 1960’s at the height of the Vietnam War, and Rocky was drafted into the U.S. Army. While on patrol in Vietnam, he was severely wounded in both legs and both feet and was told that he would never walk again, let alone play the game of football. For the next two years as he recovered from his life threatening injuries, through determination, a positive attitude, intestinal fortitude (i.e., guts) and courage, Bleier did not allow gloom and discouragement to weigh down his goal of playing professionally in the National Football League.

Rocky recovered and went on to successfully play with the Pittsburgh Steelers for nearly ten years. He also established many team records that still stand even to this today! Mr. Bleier’s story was so inspiring that a made-for-television movie told his story to the masses. He now runs his own motivational speaking company.

Look at your own heroes and see what drove them to excel and overcome desperate times. It may be a sports star – like Rocky Bleier or Olympian Michael Phelps. It may be an inspirational leader like Nelson Mandela. Or Bill Gates, Buddha or Mother Theresa.

Develop in your mind a belief that the word IMPOSSIBLE was not intended for you. Build up in your mind the confidence that encourages the mind to use its power. Find confidence in the fact that you CAN take control of any situation, no matter how challenging, as if the end result of your goal is already in your grasp.

How come the war supporters told me we would win the war in Vietnam?

Then we lost Vietnam on 30th April 1975. Now the war supporters are saying once again we will win the war in Iraq. Any idea when we will lose Iraq like we lost Vietnam?
CNN News: 70% of Americans are against the Iraq war.

Answer
The Vietnam War lasted over 15 years from 1959 to 1975.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vietnam_War

During this long period the military and the war mongers kept telling Americans things were getting better and that the US could not/should not leave.

Americans were told like now to trust the military .Obviously the 15 years of the military lying/obfuscating/rationalizing showed clearly that they could NOT be trusted .

No matter what they say, most military people, especially the Brass love wars and if you doubt that ,go read the history of General Paton as but one example.

Like in Iraq today ,we are told that we were in Vietnam to bring democracy, freedom and liberty to the Vietnamese but like in Iraq ,this was pure crap.

Psychiatrists will tell you that Bush and the military’s refusal to admit defeat and leave is simply because they have so much invested of themselves in these wars that to admit defeat would be devistating psychologically so they keep lying and obfuscating.

It is in fact the EGOS of these people that saw the Vietnam war go on for 15 bloody years and now in Iraq for almost 5 years.

Remember the US won WW11 in LESS THAN 5 YEARS .

Like in Vietnam ,there are always ups and downs in the Iraqi war with some postive results in the last month or so (ONLY MILITARY NOT THE ALL IMPORTANT POLITICAL PROGRESS) but make no mistake that like in Vietnam the US is in the middle of a CIVIL WAR and there will be NO VICTORY but a hell of a lot more body bags used.

THE US HAS LONG AGO LOST THE IRAQI WAR BUT BECAUSE SO MANY FROM BUSH TO THE GENERALS TO THE LOVED ONES OF THE SLAUGHTERED US SOLDIERS ,THEY REFUSE TO ADMIT DEFEAT BECAUSE TO DO SO MEANS ALL THIS CRIME AGAINST HUMANITY HAS BEEN A BLOODY WASTE OF TIME , MONEY AND LIVES .

Over 3500 US soldiers and over 400,000 innocent Iraqi civilians have died for NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING ..

They went to Bush’s ILLEGAL war of choice
that was based upon a pack of filthy LIES.

The mere fact that this war was based upon a KNOW pack of lies de facto ,means all have died in vain ,for NOTHING but filthy lies.

Girl Friendly Bangkok Hotels Travel Advice from an Expert

Bangkok has some of the best red light sex districts in Southeast Asia. The availability of sex is the biggest attraction, and that’s why scores of men all over the world flock to Bangkok every year. But what most first time visitors to Bangkok don’t know is that there are hotels that charge you extra money for taking a lady back to your room and there are hotels that don’t care who you bring back (as long as it’s only one guest).

Chances are if you’re reading this, then you’re looking to take a lady back to your room. If that’s so then you want to book a hotel that is girl friendly in Bangkok. Non-girl friendly hotels charge a 500 Baht joiner fee and sadly it makes a guest feel sort of shameful as the security guard is usually the one who stops a guest with lady in tow from entering the elevator. Then you’re led to the reception desk, which is also called the walk of shame where you’re presented with a 500 Baht joiner fee.

To avoid this 500 Baht joiner fee and the walk of shame, you should book a hotel that is considered girl friendly. A prime example of one such hotel is the Peninsula. This is one of the top rated hotels in the world, yet they don’t care if you bring a prostitute back to your hotel. It’s an expensive hotel however. Fortunately there are plenty of affordable ones.

Girl friendly hotels are not just a hotel where men bring ladies to for sex.  These hotels are just like any other ordinary hotel in Bangkok where business people, tourist, travelers and so on stay. They simply have a relaxed policy on guest inviting a lady back to their rooms.

Girl friendly hotels hotel rates range from budget to astronomical. Some classic examples of budget hotels are the Majestic Suites near Nana red light district and Bally’s Suites Silom in the red light district of Patpong. Most of these budget hotels even include free breakfast and have a pool for guests to unwind on a hot afternoon.

What most first time travelers to Bangkok’s want to know is which red light district they should stay next to. The answer is Nana red light district. Nana is a district in Bangkok filled with clubs, beer bars, pubs and most importantly where you will find the most freelance Thai prostitutes on the streets at night. The main focal point however is Nana Entertainment Plaza. It’s a small building, just 3 story tall filled with a manner of go go bars. In the middle is an open arcade with several well known open air bars.

So if you’re looking for a girl friendly hotel, find one in the Nana red light district. That’s where all the action is and that’s where you should be to experience Bangkok’s sex district up front. But make sure you book ahead of time as most of those hotels are very popular.

Visit Nana Guest Friendly Hotels for a complete list of no joiner fee hotels in Bangkok.

You should also check out Nana and Soi Cowboy Red Light District Guide for maps of these popular Bangkok attractions.

A Bangkok Travel Guide From Rhino Car Hire in Thailand

One of the worlds most lively, vibrant and unique cities, visiting Bangkok is an unforgettable experience and having a car is a great way to get around.

Experience the pulsating nightlife of downtown Bangkok. Though the city has a reputation for having a seedy side, it is in fact quite safe and everywhere you are greeted by brilliant tropical foliage such as bougainvillea. Bangkok is polluted and overcrowded though, while the heat is often stifling.

More than 11 million people live in Bangkok which is massive. Thai people are incredibly friendly and so you are sure to find this a warm and welcoming city whether you come here for business or pleasure. Visitors will also find a fascinating mix of traditional Thai culture and temples with fast paced Western culture.

Bangkok became the capital of Thailand when it was created in the late eighteenth century by the Chakri dynasty of monarchs. Dont miss amazing sights such as the Ancient City, the Anantasamakhom Throne Hall and the Bangkok Butterfly Garden and Insectarium. The temples of Wat Benchamabophit and Wat Bowon Niwet are also spectacular, as is the King Taksin the Great Monument and the King Rama I the Great Memorial.

Bangkok is one of the best culinary cities in the world and the spices and tastes of Bangkok are some of its most memorable aspects. You can eat the traditional Pad Thai dish at curry houses right across the city.

For the more adventurous there are a range of insects such as grasshoppers and scorpions which can be eaten. If you want to learn how to cook Thai food there are a number of restaurants which do courses, the Blue Elephant chain does a relatively pricey introduction but you do get a Blue Elephant apron for your trouble.

For those who prefer not to eat Thai food there is excellent international food on offer too. Another quintessentially Thai pastime is kick boxing. Take a class or watch a match depending on how brave you are feeling. To learn more about Buddhism you can go to The International Buddhist Meditation Centre where donations are welcome as attendance is free of charge. To try your hand at Thai massage go to the Wat Po Temple in Rannakosin.

Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport is Southeast Asias busiest airport and the departures area is famous for its lavish shopping opportunities. Travellers will find all the conveniences they need here including excellent restaurants, though you should be aware t hat once you have cleared security there are no facilities or toilets.

Bangkok Suvarnabhumi International Airport has the airport code BKK and it is a main transport hub for Thai Airways and Bangkok Airways. Other airlines which use the airport are SGA Airline, Air Asia and PBair. Allow plenty of time to get around Bangkok Suvarnabhumi International Airport because it is considered to be the worlds largest terminal building. There are a number of hotels located near to the airport for those who are making international transfers. The smaller Don Muang airport was the main airport of Bangkok up until 2006.

Having a car is definitely the easiest way to get from Bangkok Suvarnabhumi International Airport to the city itself, a 30 kilometre journey eastwards. It also saves you money on expensive taxi rides (for Thailand) or the inconvenience of having to wait in line for public transport. Car hire Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport is a cheap and cheerful way to get around the city, though the traffic will certainly raise your heart rate and drivers should know that motorcycle accidents are very common.

Many tourists who go to Thailand frequent the go-go bars, though they should know there are strict rules of etiquette inside and having a passport on you is advisable in case there is a police raid and you dont fancy spending the night in jail. Also Bangkok is famous for chicks with dicks, otherwise known as ladyboys. The Adams apple is often a giveaway but some have really mastered the art of fitting in!

Another word of warning regards the chained elephants which are dragged through the streets. The owners charge tourists to have their picture taken with the elephants but if you do so you are condoning this cruel practice.
