Sydney is one of the largest and the biggest cosmopolitan city in Australia. It is a city which has a harbor and is called by visitors as one of the most beautiful and livable cities in the world. Sydney is a city which has a history of art and culture and its location allows it to acquire miles of ocean and coastline with beautiful beaches. Sydney has two of the most iconic landmarks in the world; namely the Sydney Harbor Bridge and Sydney Opera House.

Inside The City
The city is a major international hub of trade and communication in the Asia Pacific and it also was the host city to the Olympics which speaks volumes about its importance to the world. Sydney is a huge city with various districts. It is also surrounded by many sprawling park and gardens. The city has six main districts namely the city centre which houses the financial buildings and many fine restaurants and shopping malls. Then we have the Rocks, which is a cosmopolitan centre of the city, it also has the Sydney Harbor Bridge. The Darling Harbor is another district which has places of entertainment. It houses many museums and restaurants. The city south area has various markets most notably Haymarket, Chinatown and Central Station. The city east has various parks like the Kings Cross, Surry Hills and Moore Park; it has a vibrant night life and various cafes. Finally, the city west district is where the fish markets and the Star City Casino are located.

Climate
The climate of the city is moderate with hot days in the summer. The maximum temperature in summer can reach around 40 degrees while the winters are cool. Minimum temperatures hover around to 10 degree mark in December and January.

Moving Around
You can reach the city by plane, cruise ships, cars and buses. Nearly all the international carriers fly to and from Sydney to other major international destinations. The Sydney airport is one of the busiest and entry point to other destinations in Australia. Getting around a big city can be difficult but Sydney has a very efficient public transport system that would get you to the various parts of the city with no difficulty. You can either use the Sydney city buses or the suburban rail network which runs along the various districts.

Major Attractions
Sydney has numerous landmark buildings which is a must see for anyone who visits Australia. First up is the Sydney Harbor Bridge, which takes you from the rocks to north Sydney. Then is the iconic Sydney Opera House, which is one of the most famous architectural landmarks ever built. The Sydney Olympic park built around the Olympics houses the sporting facilities. The darling harbor houses are some of the most famous eating out places in the city. Finally, you can also visit the Sydney Tower which is the tallest building in the city and houses many restaurants.

Food
Eating out in the city can be fun, as the city accommodates many different communities from the world. The food here is diverse and you can find many different types of foods very easily. There are many multicultural restaurants around, which cater to the different customers from all around the world.

Hitchhiking is a way of traveling when you are short of money or just want to experience an adventure you will never get when traveling with comfort. Both these causes lead to one result – you come on the road and try to catch a car.
Some hitchhikers know the exact point where they want to turn out to be, but some never know where and when their trip will finish.

Some piece of advice before you begin your trip.

1)   If you know your destination point, you’d better to think over your route not to find yourself far away from the desired city.
2)   Be extra careful, because the hitchhiking is always a risk. Take you mobile and try to be in touch with your friends or relatives (if connection allows, of course).
3)   Be careful with your money – don’t store all them in one place.
4)   Don’t take too much luggage – you’ll be tired very soon.
5)   Take all you may need – if your route passes far from the cities you may have no chance to by all the necessary things.
6)   When you travel alone the risk increases twice – so, may be it’s better to have a fellow traveler. There are a lot clubs and communities of hitchhikers (for example, in Internet) where you not only can find a fellow traveler but also receive a useful advise.

What attracts people in hitchhiking is the feeling of freedom and the opportunity to have the real adventure. It’s a challenge in some way and some people like to accept it. Some hitchhikers like to have a chance to meet new people and to make friends.

Of course, sometimes such meetings are not exiting at all – the boring drivers desiring to describe you their whole lives is the least of the problems. Everybody knows the proverb – don’t talk to the strangers. It has sense because some of them are really dangerous. If you are locked up in a car with such a person, the best thing is to use your gas spray can and to clear out of the car. So, don’t forget to include your aerosol in list of the necessary things.
Although the hitchhiking is supposed to be free of charge, be ready to pay sometimes. May be the only driver going in your direction will not intend to pick up you for free.

Speaking about the best routs for hitchhiking – it’s Europe and the United States. The reason? The highways are better, the traffic is intensive and you surely get to the point in a short time. And, again, no borders, no extra visa, no problems with the customs. It’s all true, but if you want the real challenge you can go to some wild part of Asia or Africa. It will be difficult to catch a car (just because they are not widespread there) and if don’t know the language it will be hard to explain what you want. However when you reach your destination you will feel yourself a hero, or at least, a brave traveler seeking for the unknown places.

As for where to stay for the night – the real hitchhiker tries not to stay in the hotels of even in campings. He or she would prefer to stay on the nature or the house of the local inhabitant.

Now the hitchhiking has become some kind of sport – and there are some competitions in this field. The aim is to achieve some point in the shortest time and not to pay for it. On TV there are even some shows, devoting to hitchhiking. Its popularity increases. Why? The suggestion is that people are fed up with their comfortable lives and like to feel the adrenaline and to participate in an adventure. As far as the West concerned, it’s true, but as it was said in the beginning, some choose this way of traveling just because they have no money.

With light traffic, you can get to SM MOA in under 15 minutes. If there is moderate traffic, between 20-30 mins, 30 min- 1 hr, if the traffic is really heavy. SM MOA is just two rides away from DLSU – one jeep ride to from DLSU to Buendia (under 5 mins, usually), and another from Buendia to MOA so it won’t really take long.

Edit:

Oh, this is assuming that the jeepney from Buendia to MOA leaves immediately. The drivers fill their jeepneys first before leaving, so take that into account.

Dubai Travel Guide

Understanding Dubai
A relatively new tourist destination, Dubai has gained in popularity in the recent years. It is essentially a desert city with superb infrastructure, liberal policies and excellent tourist amenities. Just 5 hrs from Europe and 3 hrs from most parts of Asia, Dubai makes a great short break for shopping, partying, sunbathing, fine dining, sporting events, and even a few sinful pleasures. It is a city of superlatives: for the fastest, biggest, tallest, largest and highest, Dubai is the destination.

The weekly day off is on Friday. Government departments are off on Friday and Saturday while a lot of multi-nationals are off on Friday and Saturday. Most local companies work a half day on Thursday. Note that, Since September 2006, a harmonised weekend of Friday and Saturday adopted for the public sector and schools.

Dubai Climate

The city of Dubai is situated on a coastal strip bordered by desert and gets very hot and humid in the summer. Cooler, more pleasant weather lasts from the end of September to begining of May. In May, June, July, August and September the sun is intense and temperatures can touch 50 degree Celsius in the city and even higher in the desert! The heat coupled with humidity of 80-90% near the coast effectively precludes most activity outdoors for the daylight hours during summer.

January and February generally produce the highest precipitation.

Get in Dubai

By plane

Dubai International Airport (DXB) is the largest hub in the Middle East and the home base of the Dubai’s flag carrier Emirates. The airport is famous for its duty-free shopping Alcohol is also available at an inbound duty free store situated in the baggage reclaim area. The allowance is 4 bottles (or four 6 packs) per person.

Sharjah International Airport (SHJ) is located in the emirate of Sharjah. A taxi ride to Dubai will typically cost Dhs 50. The airport is fairly basic but is being expanded.
Dubai World City (JXB) recently announced to be ready for 2010.
Frequent visitors from countries granted automatic visa on entry may wish to purchase an e-gate card to speed up immigration formalities and save passport pages. The e-gate card office is situated in the upstairs foodcourt area of the departures concourse. The card will cost AED 150. Note: If you intend to buy an e-gate card in Dubai, you must have entered UAE via Dubai airport and not Sharjah.

By Car

Dubai’s only international road border is with Oman at Al Wajajah. Expatriate residents of Oman will require an official permit to exit Oman by road. Visitors do not require the permit. There is an OMR 3.000 charge per vehicle to exit Oman and, if returning, retain the charge receipt as it will be required to reenter. Ensure that insurance is valid for the UAE (preferably before commencing the journey). Temporary UAE insurance can be purchased at the border for a premium price. Exiting Oman is fairly orderly but several kilometres down the road, entry into the UAE is totally disorganised; so, be prepared for a wait.
There are also road borders between the neighboring Emirate of Abu Dhabi and Oman at the Al Burami Oasis which divides the sister cites of Al Ain, UAE and Al Burami, Oman. Some people have experienced problems entering Oman at the Al Wajajah post and reentering the UAE at Al Burami Oasis.

By boat

Dubai is a trading hub for dhows from around the Indian Ocean. Travellers wanting to arrive in the city this way will probably need to make their own arrangements with the captain of the vessel.

Get around Dubai

By bus

Dubai has a good bus service with buses at intervals of about 20 min in general. However the bus service is not recommended for tourists as it is not as comprehensive as in other major global cities. The main bus stations are Gold Souq Market (in Deira) and Al Ghubaiba bus station (in Bur Dubai). Bus services are also available to other emirates (Al Ghubaiba). Ramadan timings differ.

Use the Dubai Public transport as a cheaper means of traveling within the several districts in Dubai. The fare comes up to an easy 1.50 AED, affordable for those who prefer a cheaper mode of transport. There’s a bus stand on almost every road in Dubai and with all the friendly people in Dubai, you won’t find it difficult to get help at any point of time. Self-explanatory maps and route marks and their bus numbers are placed inside every bus stand. At any time, if in doubt, simply ask the bus driver for help!

By taxi

Taxis are reasonably priced and easily found on all main roads in built-up areas, 24 hours. The official taxis (cream color) are a lot cheaper than people approaching you at the airport saying “you want taxi?”. They are metered thus saving a haggle over prices. From the airport, there is a standing charge of AED 20; all other pick ups attract a standing charge of AED 3.00. You can waive for a taxi at any place. When driving the rate is AED 1.60 per km There is nothing to choose in rates between the 5 players: Dubai Transport, National, Cars, Metro, and Arabian; so, take the first one that comes along. Driving standard in Dubai ranges from poor to wild – taxis are some of the worst on the roads.

By car

There are a countless number of Rent-A-Cars that will provide a mode of transportation for very cheap rates and very little paperwork. An International Driving Permit is not necessarily required, but hire companies may not rent a car without one. Depending on which country you are from (UK, USA & Australian licenses are acceptable), your driving license could be used to obtain a temporary driving permit at the licensing office in the City Centre shopping mall.
Some agencies will hire out cars complete with drivers. Visitors taking advantage of this option will need to make certain that their driver knows his way around, as many do not.
When driving on the main roads, such as Sheikh Zayed road, the junction numbers are not in logical order! Junction 13 is just after 18 and are rarely as shown on the maps. Road names can also be very confusing with slight differences in spelling (due to transliteration from Arabic) being very important. The construction work that is taking place throughout and around Dubai can make finding your destination a challenge. Temporary road layouts change with alarming regularity and temporary signs can be misleading or non existent.
Driving during morning and afternoon peak hours is not recommended, as traffic slows to a standstill and even a simple trip across a bridge can take up to 45 minutes. There is also a scarcity of parking spaces in many parts of the city.
With such a mixture of nationalities residing in the city, driving styles are mixed to say the least. Dangerous driving will be witnessed, or experienced, on a frequent basis; and, bear in mind that Dubai has one of the highest per capita road death rates in the world. There is zero tolerance for alcohol and driving with stiff penalties meted out, including jail and deportation.

By boat

An easier way of crossing the Dubai Creek is by abra, essentially a small ferry. Abra stations are located along the Creek on both the Bur Dubai and Deira sides, and the system of filling the boats is remarkably efficient. The cross-river trip costs 1 Dirham (AED 1) per passenger, payable to the driver after the boat has left the station, and affords a very picturesque view of the city (not to be missed). Abras set off very regularly, and the service is available round-the-clock.

Abras can also be hired for a private tour (for a price negotiable with the driver but usually very cheap). This is quite a popular activity at sunset on a clear day, particularly if the driver is able to enliven the tour with stories about the structures on either side of the Creek. From what I read from Golf Digest magazine few years ago, Earl Woods met his wife during on a tour of Vietnam war. My question is why and what was young Thai woman doing in Vietnam during war?

I grew up near Fort Lewis (WA), and heard some disturbing stories regarding Asian women married to American servicemen during 60’s-70’s.

I actually don’t know one, but maybe this can help too.

I traveled Southeast Asia for two months and found the cheapest way to do it was flying in to Singapore and from there, purchase tickets from Air Asia to Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia, and Vietnam. And from even there, there are loads of buses that will take you across the borders i.e. Laos to Thailand for $20 USD.

Numerous backpackers and travelers have said the same during my trip, i.e. you can purchase a ticket to Bangkok from Phuket for $30 USD.
