What was an important event of the Vietnam War in 1961?

For a project, i have to make a poster with important things and events from 1961. One of the topics i got to cover is the vietnam war so I need inportant evnts/event for the poster.

Answer
May 1961

Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson visits South Vietnam and offers military and economic aid to Diem. By the end of the year, the U.S. military presence in Vietnam will reach 3,200 men (although combat units will not be deployed until 1965).

Disability in Hanoi – do we reduce disabled people just to statistics

Disability is often reduced to a statistic. 5% of the population, oh no more than that at least 7% of the population, no maybe even more than that. In Vietnam throwing around stats is almost as great a past time as it is in the West.

Yet statistics are not really the point. If one disabled person in a wheelchair can’t get into a building because there are only steps and no on-ramp is that something one can ignore? Oh it only affects a small percentage of people. So let’s not worry too much. After all we need to spend that money on helping 1000 people get out of poverty.

So there’s another statistic. Move the money to where it can do the most good. Help many people rather than one person. And there’s a kind of logic to that. Unless of course you are that one person in the wheelchair unable to get into that building.

Then it becomes a very personal story. It’s no longer a statistic to that individual. It could be a real hurdle. What if it’s a possible job opportunity for this disabled person that will enable him or her to become independent and live a proud life – even be able to support their own family.

But there’s no on-ramp and the employer thinks it’s too much money or effort to install a ramp for a wheel chair. Never mind the toilet facility of course. And are the desks far apart enough. Can this individual reach the photostat machine, the files on the top shelf, the kettle in the kitchen. And the list goes on.

For a statistic nothing will be changed. But for an individual it will. Especially if that individual has a smile that melts glaciers. That individual has skills that the employer will ‘kill’ for. That individual in the wheelchair who is so wanting this job they will jump through all hoops to get it. If only they could.

Maybe we need to move away from statistics. Let’s not think of numbers. Let’s take each one of these people and treat them as an individual. A VIP, a very very important person.

That doesn’t mean those 1000 folk who can be helped out of poverty are any less important. But there is enough money, care and solutions in this world to help every disabled person, every poverty stricken individual.

We just have to focus on them as people. Get away from statistics.

So let’s give Hold the Future a big hand. This is one place where there are no bland stats or meaningless numbers. This is a place where individuals are seen. Check that happy face in the image in the header. There’s a young woman living, learning and working. Oh and yes she happens to use a wheel chair. Isn’t she worth being seen as an individual rather than a statistic?

What documents are required for my friend from Manchester to get married in Vietnam?

My friend is going to get married to a Vietnamese lady. So apart from the Certificate of No-marriage Records, what other documents does he need to bring to Vietnam to apply for the Marriage Certificate in Vietnam? Thank you.

Answer
Tell him to ask his Vietnamese wife to ask the local department of justice in Viet Nam for details of required documents.

I believe that in addition to the certificate of no-marriage records, he has to present:
- A true copy of his passport with the original copy for reference
- A medical record showing that he has no symptoms of serious mental illness (i.e. he has sufficient civil capacity and responsibilities).

It’s better if he can include some kind of valid identity card stating his address outside of Viet Nam. Copy of this document should also be made with presented with the original copy for reference.

Any travel tips for Vietnam and Cambodia, sample itinerary for the must-see places in these countries?

My friends are planning to go to Vietnam and Cambodia for about a week. Would love to here from people who have visited these countries. Any tips on cheap but decent accommodation, foods, best places to go and things to do? Or some sample itinerary? Any personal experience will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance. ^_^
We are really not after the beach or swimming, we are more on the famous places, must-see, must-do, best places for first time tourists. We would also love to try the local cuisine.

Answer
Kind of hard to give specific recommendations without knowing what you like to do. If you want some beaches, for example, Vietnam is going to have far more options than Cambodia would have.

Cambodia:
Angkor Wat in Siem Reap is a *must see* attraction. Angkor and the Bayon temples are incredible sites to see (more info: http://www.hoteltravel.com/cambodia/siem_reap/guides/sightseeing.htm). Angkor Wat has been the most impressive cultural site I’ve seen during my travels throughout Asia & it can actually take several days to get around the major temples.

Vietnam:
It depends on which city you’re going to largely stay around. If I had my choice, however, I would go to Ha Long Bay and Ho Chi Minh.

Food:
Will generally be very cheap in either country if you want to try the local cuisine.

How did the Americans become involved in the Vietnam War in the first place?

How did the Americans become involved in the Vietnam war in the first place?
Please source.

Answer
During WW II, the French were handily defeated by the Germans, and came under German occupation. They, like the Dutch, surrendered and ‘voluntarily’ joined the Third Reich. The Germans awarded the various Asian colonies to their allies, the Japanese, including what was then called French Indochina (Vietnam).

After the war, despite promises to the contrary, the French resumed their role as the ‘master race’ in their Asian colonies, and, not surprisingly, the Vietnamese objected. This led to guerrilla fighting, and even heavy fighting between large units, especially at Dien Bien Phu, where the Vietnamese defeated the French.

After the French withdrew, Vietnam was divided by UN proclamation. The South became a corrupt brutal dictatorship, supported by the US. Eisenhower sent the predecessors of the US Army’s Special Forces to advise the Army of the Republic of Viet Nam and some helicopters and their crews to assist. After Kennedy was elected, he sent further helicopters and crews and advisers to the ARVN.

After Kennedy’s death, though, president Lyndon Johnson decided to up the war in order, apparently, to escalate the profits of defense contractors. He ordered the US Navy to stage some phony border incidents with the North Vietnamese in order to have an excuse to begin the wasteful spending that marked the entire war.

And so Navy destroyers USS Maddox and USS Turner Joy began a steady series of incursions into North Vietnamese waters in the Gulf of Tonkin, daring the North’s navy (some gunboats, no match for a destroyer) to come out, and when those boats appeared, the destroyers blasted them out of the water. Aircraft from the USS Ticonderoga, which ‘happened’ to be in the area, then strafed the wreckage, killing any possible survivors. The next day, Johnson was appealing to escalate the war, and with the passing of the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, got his wish, and billions and billions of dollars began to flow into the coffers of what Eisenhower called ‘The Military-Industrial Complex.”

I have worked as tour leader since 1998 and found that many tourists chose wrong tours because most foreign sale persons do not really know Vietnam destinations. Therefore, they could not give the right advices to tourists. This makes me to work as Vietnam trip advisor as well.
