New Travel Destination Nubra Valley in North India

Nubra Valley is about 150 km north of Leh, the capital town of Ladakh, India. Its original name was Ldumra (the valley of flowers). The Nubra valley geographically separates the Ladakh and the Karakoram Ranges. The average altitude of the valley is about 10,000 ft. above the sea level. The common way to access this valley is to travel over the Khardung La pass if approached from Leh. Traveling to Nubra valley require an Inner Line Permit which can be easily obtained in Leh town.

In ancient age the old famous trade, silk trade route passed through nubra valley and it has the footfalls of different traders involved in silk trade.

If you see from Khardung La (5,359m), the highest motorable pass in the world, you can see  the Nubra Valley with the towering Sasser Peaks On the north and On the south it is the Indus Valley. The first village on the Nubra side is Khardung. The next village is Khalsar, which is the confluence of Nubra and Shayok. From Khalsar there are two roads — the first follows the Nubra River to Panamik and the other follows the Shayok to the villages of Hundar and Diskit. The first route stertched all the way from India to Central Asia. The last indian village on that route is Panamik . After Panamik, the road crossed the Karakoram and Kun-Lu ranges and went straight into Central Asia. The Nubra valley is wide and is surrounded by barren mountains on all sides and there’s a little bit of cultivation on both sides of the river only.

Diskit, which is the headquarters of Nubra sub-division and a small town, has all basic facilities including a number of good hotels. Hot springs in the outskirts of Panamik, Ensa Gompa (over 250 years old monestry),Samtanling Gompa is another famous Buddhist religious place, located at the Sumur Village are other point of attractions in Nubra Valley.

Getting there:  Leh is connected by air from Delhi, Chandigarh, Jammu and Srinagar. It is also connected by road from Manali.

Where can I travel in Asia for the lowest cost?

I want to travel overseas to Asia (someplace warm) and I want my money to go very far – I also eat mostly raw fruit and vegetables and would like to have easy access to them?

So where can I fly for cheapest and how do I get flight costs down?

Where can I stay for cheap but still feel safe?

How far will my money get me and how much can I expect to spend?

Thank you in advance for your time!
Peace.

Answer
Destination: Indonesia would do. It’s a big country with fabulous sights worthy of a visit. If you want to save money, don’t stay in Jakarta or Bali. These are places where you can have a great holiday on a budget:
-Lombok (island east of Bali that’s more tranquil and just as beautiful. ask around for guided tours to historical temples and ruins of ancient kingdoms, watch traditional “sendratari”’s [dance drama musical] and eat local food)
-Tana Toraja (a tribe in Southern Sulawesi with very unique mystical culture… search on internet to find out more). Not very far from the Toraja area live another tribe called the Bugis, a tribe historically famous for being far-travelling pirates. Apparently the English word “bogeyman” was derived from the name of this tribe.
-Ambon (Moluccan Islands, historically aka spice islands… Ambon has the most beautiful crystal-clear sea and is a popular destination for scuba divers)
-Yogyakarta (South-central Java, a province in the form of a kingdom. Visit the Sultan’s palace and museums that talk about the royal family’s history. Hike up to Borobudur and Prambanan, one of the world’s biggest Buddhist and Hindu temples. Catching a live Sendratari Ramayana at the open air Prambanan theater is a must. Eat street food: must try gudeg. Ride “becak” [pedicab] or “andong” [horse carriage] down the streets of Malioboro and bargain with souvenir peddlers there)
-Padang/Minang (province in Western Sumatera famous for being adherent Muslims but having a female-dominated culture–their surnames are maternal! must see their beautiful architecture, watch their dynamic traditional dances, and try the famous Padang cuisine)

Stay: In Lombok you may be able to get away with a local “melati” hotel (non-star) but in other places I recommend sticking to a budget world-known chain such as Quality Inn or Ibis.

Safety: Wear an old baseball cap, sunglasses, and light long-sleeved shirts so people don’t immediately notice that you are a foreigner. Wear flip-flops and clothes that aren’t expensive, avoid wearing jewellery and carrying thick wallets with money popping out of them. Don’t answer your mobile phone when you’re caught in a traffic jam or walking in the street–set it on silent and pretend you don’t have it. I always abide by these rules in Indonesia and I’ve never had a problem.

Cheap flights: try Gulf Air, China Air, or Garuda Indonesia. Once you get to Indonesia there will be many cheap regional flights like Lion Air–you can travel Jakarta-Yogyakarta (1 hr flight) for about the equivalent of $25-30 retour. Check www.wikipedia.org for a complete list of regional Indonesian airlines.

Budget: hotel not included, set Rp150.000-Rp200.000 per day (Indonesian Rupiah, IDR) Approximately Rp10.000 (ten thousand) to US$1. Check http://www.xe.com for current exchange rates.

Travel India Taj Mahal

Taj Mahal, the monument of immeasurable beauty is one of the modern Seven Wonders of the World. It is considered one of the most beautiful buildings in the world and considered the finest example of Mughal architecture. The Mughal emperor Shah Jahan got this monument constructed in the memory of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal.  The thoughts that come into the mind while watching the Taj Mahal of Agra is not just its phenomenal beauty, but the immense love which was the reason behind its construction. Standing majestically on the banks of River Yamuna, the Taj Mahal is synonymous with love and romance. The entire complex, with gardens, gateway structures, and mosque, was completed in 1653, which took almost 22 years to complete.

History of Taj Mahal
The Taj Mahal was built by the fifth Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in the memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal.she died while giving birth to their 14th child. It is believed that during her last moments, Mumtaz Mahal obtained a promise from Shah Jahan that he will build world’s most beautiful monument in her memory. Taj Mahal symbolizes eternal love of a man for his wife. The body of the queen was buried temporarily in the Zainabadi Garden in Burhanpur and moved to Agra after six months.

The land on which the Taj Mahal was built was acquired from Raja Jai Singh. The construction began in 1631 AD and completed in 22 years. 20,000 labors and artisans were employed for the work. The material for the mausoleum was brought from all over India and central Asia. Taj Mahal was designed by the Iranian architect Ustad Isa.

Soon after the Taj Mahal’s completion, Shah Jahan was deposed by his son Aurangzeb and put under house arrest at nearby Agra Fort. Upon Shah Jahan’s death, Aurangzeb buried him in the mausoluem next to his wife.

Architecture of Taj Mahal
Taj Mahal architecture is a kind of fusion of Persian, Central Asian and Islamic architecture. The Taj Mahal is situated 900 ft away from the entrance gate. The tomb is built over a marble plinth, which rests over a high sandstone base. And there are four tapering minarets on the four corners of the marble plinth flank the tomb. The minarets height is of 138 ft and is crowned by with eight windowed cupolas over the marble plinth.

The main building is built of marble and is square in plan with chamfered corners. Each side of the corner has an iwan adorned with calligraphy. There are small rectangular double arches one over the other on both sides of the iwan. The arched alcoves of equal sizes are semi-octagonal. The pilasters demark each section of the façade on both side, which rises from plinth of the tomb up to the frieze and are topped by beautiful pinnacles with lotus buds and finials. A shadowy burial crypt inside the Taj Mahal houses the tombs of Shah Jahan and his wife Mumtaz Mahal. Above these tombs is the main chamber that has the false tombs, typical of mausoleums of the Mughals. Perforated marble screens were used to transmit light into the central chamber.

Excursions from Taj Mahal

Mathura:
Mathura is the birthplace of lord Krishna, one of the most popular Indian deities. It is located on the west bank of Yamuna River about 62 kms North West of Agra. Matura is famous for the Hindu heritage.  The main attraction of this ancient city is the room inside the Sri Krishna Janmabhumi temple which is regarded as the exact birthplace of lord Krishna. The 25 ghats of Mathura are also among its chief attractions. These are the sites of the holy baths and the daily rituals of the Hindus. Besides being home to countless temples and Hindu religious spots, Mathura is also known for the magnificent Jami Masjid, and a roman catholic church, the church of the sacred heart. If some one is visiting Mathura, the government museum is an unavoidable spot. This place used to be a great center of Buddhism under the Kushanas. The famous headless statue of Kanishka is displayed in this museum.

How can a wheelchair-bound college student travel Asia with her American friend? Ideas?

Hi! I am a 20-year-old from Asia who has not known the limitlessness of life until I met Tif, an outdoor American girl who brought me on bike rides and donkey rides. I have never travelled without my parents but would like to do so within the next year. Any suggestions?

Several issues include: wheelchair accessibility, accessible bathroom, backpacking tools, light-weight mobility equipments, options for transportation, cost? We have considered Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, China, and the Philippines… but we don’t know if it is too difficult for us.

Also, what can we do to get sponsors and people to help? We’re thinking of putting together an inspirational program and both of us can speak to inspire the local people. Please suggest!!!

Tips for business travelers to India

There is a quaint saying in India that “A Guest is like a God” ‘Athithi Devoh Bhava’ in Sanskrit. You would find manifestation of this saying in the attitudes of guides, drivers, etc. But also be prepared for shocks – both pleasant and unpleasant.

The advantage in Travel Tours India is that English is widely spoken and all educated people speak English. In fact in India being educated is interpreted to mean that you can speak the English language.

Experiences with India travel agent can be quite different from that in the West; you would find travel agents wanting to meet you in person to discuss with you your travel plans. The air of formality and aloofness is absent and at time you may feel not just travel agents, but people all across to be quite intrusive. May be they are not really intrusive, but are concerned that you make your way across safely. However experiences can vary from person to person, so it would be advisable to be wary when you get along in India till you get used to the attitudes here.

As far as money is concerned, these days’ international credit cards are accepted by almost all leading business establishments; earlier on you had to carry travelers’ checks (cheques). Many Indian retail establishments still do not accept payment in USD, they would insist on Indian rupees.

Beware of soiled or torn bills as they are not considered good currency in India and do not be surprised if any business establishment refuses to accept soiled or torn bills. Sun holiday India

India is still a conservative land, so although women are generally emancipated and are seen in various aspects of business, you need to be a bit alert when interacting socially with Indians. Ladies from even rich and the middle classes who are housewives could be handshake shy, although not necessarily always so. So do not be the first to extend your right hand for a handshake. The safest bet is to join your hands in the graceful Indian greeting of Namaste. You also have to say the word ‘Namaste’ as you join your palms. The word literally means ‘I bow to thee’. Golden Triangle Tour in India

Many Indians are vegetarians; hence if you are having guests over for a meal as part of business dealings, do check out their eating preferences.

India is diverse land; there are hot and cold climates, spotlessly clean areas and shabby ones, good and bad people, rich and poor, etc. So when you venture out of your hotel booking do not be shocked if you are accosted by beggars and vagabonds. It is advisable even when you are on a business trip to have your host arrange a guide for you who would safely and securely navigate you through your daily chores at least on your first visit to India, till you get to know the ropes.

Why India Is Still On The Top Of My Travel Destinations List

India is still one of the top vacation destinations in my book. It is therefore unfortunate that Mumbai was attacked by terrorists last 2008. The effect of this incident to tourists was immediate. Tourism was affected and people were looking closely if it was worth the risk to vacation in India. There are a couple reasons for an Indian vacation and hopefully for tourists who are having second thoughts, the following reasons might convince you otherwise.

India is one of the cradles of civilization with cultural heritage and traditions spanning for more than 5000 years. These traditions and culture today have been mixed with much modern ones resulting to unique combinations that visitors can surely find intriguing, exciting and enjoyable.

Even if you’re the type of person who is not as interested in cultural differences, experiencing India might change your perspective. If not your overall perception, be prepared to experience food that you have never tasted before. Just be prepared to keep a bottle of cold water handy because you might the spices too hot to bear. Famous Mughlai cuisine and well known exotic Naans and roti breads are always a treat. Not to mention the curries which one definitely must taste.

Shopping is another reason why one goes to India. The merchandises are very cheap and the choices are so many. Cloths and garments are among the more popular products. From garments with ethnic, colorful and intricate designs to hand woven or embroidered cotton and silk, the shopping experience rivals those of other popular shopping destinations in Asia like Hong Kong and Singapore. And if by chance you went to India near the Christmas season, you can have your Christmas shopping there with unique gifts you can get for your family and friends.

In case you’re not a shoppaholic nor are you that fond of culture and food, India still offers you with world famous tourist spots. The famous Taj Mahal is in India which is both an architectural marvel as well as a historical feat. If the Taj is not enough, the forts and palaces of Rajasthan would be a great place to be amazed. The craftsmanship is truly exquisite. Other destinations include the Amber Fort, Hawa Mahal, City Palace and the Ranthambore Fort, all equally unique and beautiful.

Enjoying Camel Safari in Rajasthan is also a good reason why travel to India. Experiencing the Thar desert on a camel is quite an experience. The smell of the camel might not be your thing but the overall experience is nothing like riding a sports vehicle through the desert. The safari covers villages which still hold to traditions which showcase the Rajasthan culture and lifestyle. The villages offer a break from the busy and crowded cities.

As if the above reasons are still not enough, visitors can enjoy their vacation either by taking a trip to one of best known beaches in the country or one of the mountain getaways. Or they could try both if they have the time and money for it. The sunset at Kanyakumari is simply magnificent and the Himalayan river and snow capped mountain ranges are a sight to see.

There are more reasons for an Indian vacation and those that you have read so far as but a tip of the iceberg. There might be a couple of reasons why India is not the best place to relax and enjoy but there seems to be a whole lot of good reasons why it is. You still need help deciding?

Asia Travel – Good Airlines to travel on?

I’m going to be traveling in through Asia (China, Vietnam, Thailand) in April. Any advice on airlines to use or to stay away from?
I’m thinking of booking a flight with China Southern Airlines from Guilin to Guangzhou and Guangzhou to Hanoi. From Hanoi to Bangkok, I am thinking of using Air Asia.

Any input on these airlines?

Answer
depending on your destination and your budget really. You can’t just pick any airline not keeping in mind where their hub is located and where they fly to.
Other than that, generally speaking, given the details provided of your trip i would really stick to the following:
(although a more precise rating could be given based on the class you’re travelling).

Singapore (a little expensive but worth it), Thai, Malaysian are definitely top notch for travelling through (to and from) south east asia (top service and good amenities and decent food) give their excellent cabin crew. Cathay Pacific also has an excellent network and is far reaching throughout mainland china ( a little expensive though), definitely known for its good and attentive service level. Not too sure about Dragon air, which is a regional carrier now owned by Cathay, should offer connections within China.

China airlines offers excellent value and attentive service but limited destinations, namely to and from Taiwan (not too sure about their flight safety record). As far as the north asian region, i would suggest (according to your destination whether korea or japan) either ASIANA or ANA (i think they both offer overall better service compared to the national carrier counterparties).

i would avoid vietnam airlines, air china, china southern and china eastern (especially cattle class, not because flying in economy but because of the problems you encounter with their staff: poor command of english, attitude issues in dealing with customer requests, awful customer service)

What do you think of my SE Asia travel health plan?

I’m planning to get vaccinations for Typhoid, Hepatitis A, and the Flu. I might get a Tetnus/diptheria/pertussis booster.

I will bring DEET spray, Amodium A-D, Tums, sunscreen, and iodine tablets/tincture.

Am I forgetting any essentials? Do you have any precautionary advice?

Thanks!

Answer
You forgot to mention where you will be traveling. Your actual destinations will greatly impact your choices. I got similar vaccinations as you are contemplating, plus Hep B (just to be extra careful in case in might get injured and need a blood transfusion). On my first 3 world trips, I also brought along malaria pills. But on my last 2 trips, I skipped that, since I had learned that SEA malaria was resistant to the pills I had been taking. I don’t know what Amodium is, but if it’s not for diarrhea, I might add that as well. Oh yeah; also bring one small bottle of eye drops, since it’s easy to get your eyes dried out in lots of places. And one small bottle of Asprin/pain pills, of course.

How long is the travel time from De La Salle Manila to SM Mall of Asia?

How long is the travel time from De La Salle Manila to SM Mall of Asia?

Please state the travel time WITH traffic and WITHOUT traffic. Thanks

Answer
With light traffic, you can get to SM MOA in under 15 minutes. If there is moderate traffic, between 20-30 mins, 30 min- 1 hr, if the traffic is really heavy. SM MOA is just two rides away from DLSU – one jeep ride to from DLSU to Buendia (under 5 mins, usually), and another from Buendia to MOA so it won’t really take long.

Edit:

Oh, this is assuming that the jeepney from Buendia to MOA leaves immediately. The drivers fill their jeepneys first before leaving, so take that into account.
