Why You Should Considering Retiring in Asia

In reading this article you may realize that the best part of your life could be in Asia, and the best time is now.

The theme of most retirement articles is the best place to retire in the USA.  However, according to the AARP about 80 percent of Americans do not plan to move when they retire.  Work a lifetime, and with the door open to have a fresh start in retirement, one just stays in the same town, the same house, the same routine.  There must be a better quality of life in retirement, and there is!  Nowadays, more retirees are not only moving from their house to another city or state, but are moving out of the United States.     

Over recent years I have had an increasing number of friends write to me about my life in Asia.  The motives behind the questions have varied from political discontentment to financial.  Many of the concerns are related to the high cost of living, including heating and A/C bills, taxes, grocery bills, the cost of gasoline, medical bills, dental bills, home repair bills, and list goes on.  There is no doubt about it, the cost of living in the USA goes higher each day.  Many of those who write to me are not really enjoying their Golden Years but are just getting by.  If you are in the stage of retirement planning or are now retired that should concern you, as each day is precious and we should be enjoying life to its fullest.  The best is yet to come.  

Travel with me down a different road of thought.  I have lived in retirement for the past 7 years in Asia, in the beach resort city of Pattaya, Thailand.  Being a tourist destination, you immediately picture an area with a beautiful bay view, fine restaurants, and entertainment galore.  It is more than just that.  It is so easy to get around the city using public transportation that my car sits in the driveway.  We have modern shopping centers, movie complexes, health spa’s, fitness centers, golf courses, and even an IT center with 5 floors of computers, mobile phones, and electronics.  Pattaya has not one, but two International Standard hospitals.  Health care is affordable.  Being a tourist city, the Thai staff in most stores and restaurants speak English, German, Russian, and other languages.  Language is not a problem, but learning a little basic Thai is both fun and useful.  A Hollywood movie with English sound track, shown in a high tech theater costs around $2.50.  The air-conditioned city bus is 50 cents, private buses around 25 cents.  A Thai food-bar meal runs around 75 cents.  We have clubs that meet weekly where the foreign community can get together.  They have Open Forums where newcomers to the community can ask questions.  The glimpse just given is representative of life for foreigners in most Asian countries.  A stress free, quality lifestyle on your retirement pension.   

Why Asia?  Because Asia is the most exciting, the most user friendly continent on earth.  Luxury living for pennies – not just “getting by” on your retirement pension.  The United States and Europe are becoming almost impossibly expensive to live and retire in.  Learn more about the Asian countries, which ones to consider for retirement, and why.  If funds permit, plan a holiday visit to some of the countries of interest.  Alternatively, the Internet is a great source of information.  Also, one can join an Internet blog or group and gain information and tips from persons already living overseas.  As I said in my opening, the best part of your life could be in Asia, and the best time is now.

3 Things You Should Know About Water Travel In Cambodia

The flooded forests are considered a natural wonder of Cambodia and have to be seen to be believed. You can actually sail over the top of the remains of a forest whilst all around you on the shores the same forest still flourishes. You can stop along the way and visit villages that are far from the beaten track. There you will find ancient temples that many tourists have never seen.

Travelling by water in Cambodia is an unrivalled tourist experience that many fail to plan for. As long as you have adequate holiday insurance there is no need to worry about getting off the beaten track in Cambodia.

As far as water travel goes, you are better to stay with a guided tour as independent travel can be unreliable and sometimes totally unpredictable and let’s face it, you don’t want to be explaining why you overextended your Visa because you are lost at the Mekong Delta!

I actually don’t know one, but maybe this can help too.

I traveled Southeast Asia for two months and found the cheapest way to do it was flying in to Singapore and from there, purchase tickets from Air Asia to Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia, and Vietnam. And from even there, there are loads of buses that will take you across the borders i.e. Laos to Thailand for $20 USD.

Numerous backpackers and travelers have said the same during my trip, i.e. you can purchase a ticket to Bangkok from Phuket for $30 USD.

1. Seek for some basic information

After choosing the transportation to enter the country, learning some basic information is always a wise idea to do before your arrival.

Besides cash, it is also a wise idea to bring cards with you as ATM machines are widely available everywhere around Thailand. Credit card is also accepted in many places however make sure you keep an eye on who handling your cards to avoid any cheating practices such as copying your card codes.

5. Clothes to match with the climate

The usual weather in Thailand is hot. There is a Thai joke that Thailand has 3 seasons: hot, hotter and hottest. As a result, clothes to be used in this country should be something light with short sleeves. However, trousers or a long skirt are something you should also bring at least one as some tourist attractions such as temples will not allow people with shorts or singlet to get in. Some winter clothes may be needed only if you plan to go up the hills in the northern part or north eastern part of the country during winter time, otherwise, they will be quite useless for your trip. To make sure with this, it is highly recommend travelers to check the weather forecast again before their departure.

6. Baggage check

To make your Thailand check in smoother, check the allowance of your baggage properly and make sure your bags are not overloaded. The baggage allowance is up to the airline policy so check this in your booking that issued by the airline.

Destination: Indonesia would do. It’s a big country with fabulous sights worthy of a visit. If you want to save money, don’t stay in Jakarta or Bali. These are places where you can have a great holiday on a budget:
-Lombok (island east of Bali that’s more tranquil and just as beautiful. ask around for guided tours to historical temples and ruins of ancient kingdoms, watch traditional “sendratari”’s [dance drama musical] and eat local food)
-Tana Toraja (a tribe in Southern Sulawesi with very unique mystical culture… search on internet to find out more). Not very far from the Toraja area live another tribe called the Bugis, a tribe historically famous for being far-travelling pirates. Apparently the English word “bogeyman” was derived from the name of this tribe.
-Ambon (Moluccan Islands, historically aka spice islands… Ambon has the most beautiful crystal-clear sea and is a popular destination for scuba divers)
-Yogyakarta (South-central Java, a province in the form of a kingdom. Visit the Sultan’s palace and museums that talk about the royal family’s history. Hike up to Borobudur and Prambanan, one of the world’s biggest Buddhist and Hindu temples. Catching a live Sendratari Ramayana at the open air Prambanan theater is a must. Eat street food: must try gudeg. Ride “becak” [pedicab] or “andong” [horse carriage] down the streets of Malioboro and bargain with souvenir peddlers there)
-Padang/Minang (province in Western Sumatera famous for being adherent Muslims but having a female-dominated culture–their surnames are maternal! must see their beautiful architecture, watch their dynamic traditional dances, and try the famous Padang cuisine)

Stay: In Lombok you may be able to get away with a local “melati” hotel (non-star) but in other places I recommend sticking to a budget world-known chain such as Quality Inn or Ibis.

Safety: Wear an old baseball cap, sunglasses, and light long-sleeved shirts so people don’t immediately notice that you are a foreigner. Wear flip-flops and clothes that aren’t expensive, avoid wearing jewellery and carrying thick wallets with money popping out of them. Don’t answer your mobile phone when you’re caught in a traffic jam or walking in the street–set it on silent and pretend you don’t have it. I always abide by these rules in Indonesia and I’ve never had a problem.

Cheap flights: try Gulf Air, China Air, or Garuda Indonesia. Once you get to Indonesia there will be many cheap regional flights like Lion Air–you can travel Jakarta-Yogyakarta (1 hr flight) for about the equivalent of $25-30 retour. Should All World Leaders Speak in English

Language allows people to communicate, learn, and grow which is the fundamental underpinning of society’s progress. In recent years, more people have begun discussing the question of whether all world leaders should speak English. Whether they should speak English or not depends on if there is a need for a common language, and if English is becoming one of the most commonly spoken languages throughout the world.

Many experts believe that there should be one common language that can be used as a method of conversing with people from all countries. It can reduce misunderstandings and help build bridges between cultures. English is the leading worldwide language in such areas as entertainment, science, business, and diplomacy. Approximately 85% of all information in the world is available in English. As well, English is studied as a second language more than any other language of the world. In most careers, speaking English can help one get a promotion, open the door for more opportunities, and earn more money. Governments around the world are providing funding for their citizens to learn English. The reason is not because English is a superior language, but because the language has spread across the globe. For instance, there are more people in China who speak English than in the U.S.A.

Many believe that the proliferation of the English language throughout the world is a result of America’s rise as the central superpower. International relations and business are basically tied to the United States. America is an English speaking country so other countries have recognized the value of speaking English when conversing with Americans. The result has been a surge in people learning the English language. According to a recent report by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, “between 96 and 100 percent of people in China, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, and Vietnam believe children should learn English.” Many see learning English as an essential tool to success. Chris Gibson, the British Council’s director for South India, “aims to have every South Indian speaking it by 2010, at which point he believes that English will be a codified world language” In 2007, the International Herald Tribune stated that “English is spoken in some form by three times as many non-native speakers as native speakers.” As well, the IHT wrote, “English is a first language for 400 million people, and a fluent second for between 300 and 500 million more.

The trend to learn English suggests that the use of the language will be increasing in the coming years. The Director of Asia for the McKinsey Global Institute estimates that “By 2100, the world will go from a 7,000-language planet to a couple of hundred languages at the most…English will be the major medium of communication in many countries.”

It is projected that half the world’s people will be speaking English by 2015. Many people believe English is on the path to becoming the world’s unofficial language The spread of the English language throughout the world should not only cause world leaders to consider learning the language, but it should also cause the citizens to consider taking advantage of learning English in order keep all opportunities in life available.

Straying away from the traditional methods of learning English, tools such as the Online English course are useful for beginners. While trying to learn to speak English, beginners can learn other languages by using devices such as the English to Spanish translation.

Holy moly! That’s right out of a class assignment, isn’t it?? That’s a broad topic but here are a couple places to start:

1) Politics: because of controversies over draft age, the voting age was lowered to 18 in 1971 via the 26th Amendment. Soldiers could fight and die, but had no voice in American politics

2) Culture: Vietnam changed everything. The anit-war movement spawned a change in peoples perception of government and questioning authority. Music, clothing, hair styles, films, tv, it changed everything.

3) Americans: see above. Vietnamese check wikipedia for a novel called “The Sorrow of War” its from a Vietnamese perspective. They should have a plot synopsis to help you.

Tourism in Vietnam during the war?

I know Vietnam has recently emerged as popular tourist destination.

But I’m wondering how much tourism did Vietnam get during the war years. I’m talking about civilian tourists only not the thousands of soldiers who were sent by the army. Was it safe enough for the average tourist to come and visit. Or was it more like Iraq is now, only military personnel because visiting as a civilian would almost lead to certain death.

Technically, my Mother, Brother and I were tourists in South Vietnam during the Vietnam War. My Brother and I are two of a very short list of American kids who were there during the War. We went there in 1971 to visit family while we could, and we were there long enough for me to start Kindergarten at the International private school near Tan Son Knut Airport. Although I was a kid at the time and it’s almost 35 years ago, I remember quite a bit from that trip.

I don’t recall ever feeling like I was in any danger while I was there. I never heard a gun fired, a bomb explode or even a fistfight breaking out. Most of the fighting was hundreds of miles away from Saigon during that time. Probably the only danger that I really had was riding in a moto-cyclo. The passengers sit in front on the moto-cyclos, which means you die if you get into an accident.

I was predominantly in Saigon, but we ventured from the city frequently. My Uncle’s estate was in the countryside, and I found out afterward that V.C. occupied the surrounding jungles. We went to Vung Tau Beach a few times. Along the way were jungles supposedly occupied by the V.C.

My aunt used to steal my other aunt’s moped and take me to Saigon Market (now Ben Thanh Market) a lot. We went to the zoo a lot, where I fed the elephants sugar cane stalks. Some of those elephants are still there today. There were no V.C. at either location, but the memories of those places have lasted me a lifetime.

Vietnam back then was certainly not a major tourist destination, but it was safe enough for a five-year-old American kid and a two-year-old American kid to visit.

msufiany – I beg to differ. I have my passport from when I was a kid, which has a South Vietnam visa stamped in it. That in mind, non-military visas to visit South Vietnam were being approved and non-military were visiting South Vietnam during the Vietnam War. However, South Vietnam was obviously not a popular tourist destination at the time.

Something else to think about is the benefits of being a U.S. citizen. Most Americans don’t realize how easy it is for us to travel the world. Visas to enter any country in the world are easier to obtain as an American than from any other nationality. There are certain places that are not advised for Americans to travel, but no one can really stop you if you want to go. In fact, if you want to go to Iraq right now, odds are very good that you can a visa without much hassle.

Where are the top 5 places you would like to go and see in ASIA, and why? Have you been there before? Whats the best thing about them?

(in no particular order):
1) Vietnam- it is naturally beautiful and there is just tons to do: going to the beautiful beaches, siteseeing the tourist destinations, bargaining for shopping, shopping at plazas, drinking beer for cheap, cheap food, nice people, etc… very cheap there.. you can find food that is really expensive and food that is really cheap… for example, cheap pho is 15,000 dong which is less than $1. there is expensive pho (at PHO 24) that is 26,000 dong (which is $1.70 or so…)..

2) S. Korea- this place is really nice; it is very developed and business like but also there are tons of shopping and tourist sites. if you have time, you should go to jeju island.. there is beautiful scenery and tons of korean dramas are filmed there. A little expensive.. especially food.

3) Singapore- this place is super clean, but much to do. you can just go around the city and tons to do.

4) Japan- I have never been there, but is is like the New York City in Asia. So much to do. So many people. expensive here… i saw on the travel channel that a capsule hotel is $50… but it has so much to offer.

5) China- it is such a big country, but it is nice there.. i heard. I haven’t been there.

Let’s say if I wanted to travel to Asia, what area would be the best for a modern, cultural experience?

If you have traveled to Asia, please tell me your experience and on a scale of 1-10 how you liked it.

If it’s your first time in Asia, possibly Thailand is a good introduction. It’s exotic enough with a developed infrastructure for tourism. If you’re adventurous, continue on to Bhutan(this has to be planned very much in advance though due to the visas needed)- with Bangkok being the easiest entrypoint into the ‘hidden kingdom’.
You’d mentioned both ‘modern’ and ‘cultural’ within the same sentence- so am assuming you’re looking for a rather developed tourism infrastructure. The above combination(Thailand + Bhutan) would really be the best in terms of exposing you to ‘Asia’ within a relatively safe and controlled environment.
Had personally enjoyed Thailand due to the ease of finding good hotels, restaurants and shopping(while being relatively exotic enough). Bhutan is the exact opposite- I’d found myself without mooisturizer and couldn’t find a decent drugstore even in Thimphu, electricity is cut off after a certain hour in parts of Bhutan and there really isn’t much by way of restaurants and entertainment. The cultural experience of Bhutan and the Himalayan scenery however, more than compensates for whatever lack of ‘modern’ pursuits.

How can a wheelchair-bound college student travel Asia with her American friend? Ideas?

Hi! I am a 20-year-old from Asia who has not known the limitlessness of life until I met Tif, an outdoor American girl who brought me on bike rides and donkey rides. I have never travelled without my parents but would like to do so within the next year. Any suggestions?

Several issues include: wheelchair accessibility, accessible bathroom, backpacking tools, light-weight mobility equipments, options for transportation, cost? We have considered Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, China, and the Philippines… but we don’t know if it is too difficult for us.

Also, what can we do to get sponsors and people to help? We’re thinking of putting together an inspirational program and both of us can speak to inspire the local people. Please suggest!!!
