How much would a coin be worth for Vietnam?

My grandpa fought in the Vietnam war and he gave me a penny that they used because they ran out of copper at the time and I think it was made out of lead. Anyways I was wondering how much do you think the penny would be worth? Not that I’m planning on selling it or anything but I’m just curious. Any ideas?
*How much would a coin be worth from Vietnam?

Answer
Hey! I don’t know how much it’ worth, but it also depend on the type of currency, you know North or South.
Well i guess it’ll worth about one to couple hundred bucks because it very rare to find South Vietnam currencies, because that country doesn’t exist any more. Sad though.

About North Vietnamese currency, i don’t care much.

How does someone in Vietnam prove they own a house there?

My aunt is trying to apply for a nonimmigrant visa in Vietnam to come to the US. She needs to prove that she owns a house in Vietnam, how does she go about doing it? What procedures does she need to do?
Thank you for the answers. But in order for her to prove her ownership does she just bring the red book with her or does she have to make a copy of it. After all the paperwork (support affidavit, visa application) does she have to do anything else?

Answer
If she owns a house she’ll have a red book. They just want to see evidence that she has a reason to return to Vietnam when her visa expires. If you can afford it you might be able to post a bond as a guarantee. You can in Australia and its returned when they leave the country. Check it out. Good luck.
P.S. Check out the web for a company here in Vietnam who handles visa applications and contact them, I’m only guessing. I assume she’s got to go for an interview right? Then she needs to take everything that ties her to Vietnam. What they’re looking for is a watertight guarantee that she’s going to leave the country when her visa expires. They’ll assess all that at the interview. If they suspect she’s going to overstay her visa for any reason whatsoever, it won’t matter how many books she’s got, she won’t get it. If she has borrowed money on her red book, as many do, then the bank has it and they won’t give it to her. She just needs to be perfectly honest when she goes for the interview. Given that she’s a mature age woman wanting to visit family I don’t think you’ll have any problems. Good luck.

What body gestures are considered offensive in India and Vietnam?

I am doing a project for one of my online classes, and in a nutshell I am supposed to come up with some different body gestures that we as Americans use freely and openly, but would be considered offensive towards people who live in India and Vietnam. I haven’t really found any good websites for this. Help, please?

Answer
- They avoid loud conversations and using too many gestures as it is considered very rude.
- Pointing fingers or calling anyone with fingers pointed upward is impolite. – Rather you should use your entire hand with fingers placed downwards.
- The Vietnamese are not too fond of any kind of physical contact in public, especially with the opposite sex.
- They bow down to show respect specially to an elderly person
- They generally do not shake hands with an older person. The young generally shake both hands, if at all they do.
- Only the elderly touches a child’s head.
- They use both their hands when passing on any object.
- According to Vietnamese etiquette standing with arms on the hips is considered ill-mannered.
- Crossing ones arms on the chest is also a very rude gesture.

What are some social and political outcomes of the vietnam war?

I’m working on a paper for my history class, and I need a few sources on the political and social outcomes of the vietnam war, including information on how it came to a close. Please include good sources.

Answer
The Vietnam War (now referred to as the Second Indochina War, 1959-1975) is probably one of the best documented wars in world history. The are many many good sources on the war and the topics you need for your paper.

I would start with Stanley Karnow, Vietnam. Probably the definitive narrative book on what happened politically, particularly from the perspective of the United States. A.J. Langguth’s Our Vietnam is also very good in providing narrative detail from both sides. These were top-notch journalists who became historians of the war.

If you want a hindsight view, Robert McNamara wrote two extremely well-written and useful books on the war: In Retrospect and Argument Without End. The latter provides a dialogue between the principals on both sides conducted in the late 1990s. McNamara there goes into great detail what the effects of the war were on both Vietnam and the United States, and provides some lessons to be derived from this tragedy. For a shorter broad overview with new information, you should pick up Turley’s Second Indochina War.

My take on your question would highlight the following. Over 3.8 million people Vietnamese died in the war. Many more were affected by birth defects or psychological trauma as a result of the war. Families were torn apart when elites in the South fled to the US. The War caused the dislocation of thousands more fleeing in boats to refugee camps.

The US lost 58,000 soldiers. Many more wounded. They were not given honor guards or ticker tape parades. They came home and nobody wanted to talk about it. People talked more at the massacre at My Lai and civilian deaths from bombing of North Vietnam than they did about the sacrifices of the American soldiers, sailors and airmen.

Politically, the US suffered substantial damage. The US violated international agreements it pledged to respect in the creation and support of South Vietnam, and then was forced to walk away from that ally. Despite assurances given to President Thieu privately, the US just abandoned South Vietnam to its fate, a conventional assault from the DRV.

The US pledged to multilateralism but then acted primarily unilaterally in prosecuting the war to the horror of its European allies. Congress voted continually against the war from 1969 on, eviscerating what the President was attempting to do in negotiating the best deal it could. The loss in the war substantially eroded our Cold War posture vis-a-vis the Soviet Union and hamstrung Ford and Carter in pursuing containment strategies. The war unleashed a very powerful Vietnam that was able to resist even an invasion from China in 1978.

There are many many more outcomes of the war, all covered in the books I mentioned and others.

What is the best way to ship furniture from Vietnam to the US, and how does one arrange to use this method?

I am planning on buying a significant number of pieces of furniture when visiting Vietnam in a few months, and wanted to better understand my shipping options in advance.

Answer
You want to contact a freight forwarding service or a shipping broker. The vendor that you buy the furniture from should be able to help you out with this. If they don’t, go to the nearest DHL office and ask them for a contact or call my brother-in-law:

Vu Trieu Dong
Asia Cargo Logistics Co., LTD
e-mail: duong.vutrieu@acl-vn.com
phone: 84-4 285-1854
mobile: 0913 309 702

Tell him that his fat American brother-in-law sent you. Good luck!

Where is a good place to vegetarian food in Vietnam?

We are a whole group of vegetarian people who are planning to visit Vietnam in two weeks. It is our first time visiting the country. Please tell me where will be good place with nice landscaping vegetarian restaurant to eat.

Answer
I have a few vegetarian friends in Vietnam who surprised me in how easy it is to live such a lifestyle there especially compared to Western culture. Frankly, it’s easier to tell you the restaurants where you can’t eat vegetarian rather pick the best place to eat as a vegetarian. Pretty much every place that serves food will whip up a non-meat meal without having a second thought about it.

If you want a fabulous vegetarian experience, then I suggest visiting a Buddhist temple and eat with the monks. I visited my grandpa’s temple in Vung Tau and was blown away with the lunch they served. I could swear I was eating fish or chicken if I wasn’t reminded that everything was completely vegetarian. I walked out of the temple completely full and very satisfied. Perhaps the best part was the price – FREE.

Have a great time!
