The Silk Road was used from about the 2nd to the 13th century. Silk, porcelain, laquer ware, paper, tea, spices, gems and perfumes were brought to the West. Stuff going to the East: Gold, silver, ivory, jade and other stones, wool, horses, glass, fruit and even acrobats and ostriches. The Silk Road never was a single track, but a network of caravan tracks that changed with wars, earthquakes, dry or wet periods. The Western end lied somewhere around Aleppo at the Mediterranean Sea, and the Eastern end around Luoyang in China, south of Beijing. In the middle lay the countries of Central Asia, which until 1991 were part of the U.S.S.R.: Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.

We travelled a few weeks through these countries and through a small part of China. We enjoyed our time here, partly because of the beautiful things that can be seen. And partly because the people we met were very nice and gave us the feeling we were welcome. Of course, in 4 weeks you can only see a glimpse of these countries. Especially in Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan we’ve only been a very short time. Perhaps we can come back here someday to see more .

Overland routes of Silk roads

As it extends westwards from the ancient commercial centers of China, the overland, intercontinental Silk Road divides into the northern and southern routes bypassing the Taklamakan Desert and Lop Nur.

The northern route started at Chang’an (now called Xi’an), the capital of the ancient Chinese Kingdom, which, in the Later Han, was moved further east to Luoyang. The route was defined about the 1st Century BCE as Han Wudi put an end to harassment by nomadic tribes.[citation needed]

The route travels northwest through the Chinese province of Gansu from Shaanxi Province, and splits into three further routes, two of them following the mountain ranges to the north and south of the Taklimakan Desert to rejoin at Kashgar; and the other going north of the Tian Shan mountains through Turpan, Talgar and Almaty (in what is now southeast Kazakhstan). The routes split west of Kashgar with one branch heading down the Alai Valley towards Termez and Balkh, while the other traveled through Kokand in the Fergana Valley, and then west across the Karakum Desert towards Merv, joining the southern route briefly.

One of the branch routes turned northwest to the north of the Aral and Caspian seas then and on to the Black Sea. Yet another route started at Xi’an, passed through the Western corridor beyond the Yellow Rivers, Xinjiang, Fergana (in present-day eastern Uzbekistan), Persia and Iraq before joining the western boundary of the Roman Empire. A route for caravans, the northern Silk Road brought to China many goods such as “dates, saffron powder and pistachio nuts from Persia; frankincense, aloes and myrrh from Somalia; sandalwood from India; glass bottles from Egypt, and other expensive and desirable goods from other parts of the world.” In exchange, the caravans sent back bolts of silk brocade, lacquer ware and porcelain.

The southern route is mainly a single route running from China, through Karakoram. Here it is nowadays the international paved road connecting Pakistan and China as the Karakoram Highway. It then continues to Turkestan–Khorasan region, Mesopotamia, and into Anatolia, with southward spurs enabling the journey to be completed by sea from various points. It starts out southwards in China. Crossing the high mountains, then it passes through northern Pakistan, over the Hindu Kush mountains, and into Afghanistan, rejoining the northern route briefly near Merv. From there it follows a nearly straight line west through mountainous northern Iran and the northern tip of the Syrian Desert to the Levant, where Mediterranean trading ships plied regular routes to Italy, and land routes went either north through Anatolia or south to North Africa. Another branch road traveled from Herat through Susa to Charax Spasinu at the head of the Persian Gulf and across to Petra and on to Alexandria and other eastern Mediterranean ports from where ships carried the cargoes to Rome

Just What is Zen Meditation Anyway

Zen meditation goes back over a thousand years and there are no written records available to cover its exact start. So, as you would expect, it is steeped in tradition. No-one is totally certain exactly how or when Zen meditation first started although one of the earliest influences is the Flower Sermon. This ceremony was wordless and this is thought to help the purity of the sermon, where the Sakyamuni or Bhudda offers a white flower to the Sangha, an assembly of people who have a common goal or interest. This kind of ritualistic ceremony is often associated with Zen Bhuddism.

These early origins give Zen meditation a lot of its mystique and mystery. Rather than following a series of written creeds, practicers of Zen rely on the direct experience of different things as they journey from being a student to (eventually) a teacher of the art.

This can make it difficult for beginners to get to grips with Zen meditation methods as the learning takes place over an extended period of time, which is at odds with our modern aim of having everything we want instantly available. That said, the benefits of this are that you end up with a deeper understanding and arguably a better meditation experience.

The method is split up into 5 schools, also known as houses:

Guiyang Schoool, Linji, Caodong, Yunmen and Fayan. They were named after the different Zen masters who founded them and, as you would expect, each takes a slightly different approach.

Between them, these different schools have influenced the current methodology of Zen Bhuddism.

There are also national differences in the way that Zen is practiced. for instance, China’s version is called Chán. At one time, this was the largest sect in Chinese Bhuddism and it was responsible for a large body of literature which is still referred to today.

Japan sees three different schools from Soto, the largest, down to Obaku via Rinzai. The Japanese versions are very open and have even seen a recent Christian Zen version emerge.

Thien Buddhism is the largest school of Bhuddism in Vietnam and can trace its roots back to 580 AD when an Indian monk visited Vietnam and introduced the local population to the art of Zen.

Regardless of the school, one of the main styles of Zen meditation is the sitting meditation. It has different names according to the country it is being practiced in but usually involves practitioners sitting in what is called the “lotus” position – the archetypal form of sitting with your legs crossed and hands resting in your lap that is so often used in movies and on television to depict someone meditating.

Some Zen schools also use an intensive group practice where monks meditate for hours and hours every day. A typical routine is to meditate for between thirty and fifty minutes, then take a short break or meal before meditating again. This is only for the most dedicated as very little time is left for sleep or communication outside the monastery.

What Happens to the Economy when the Country is at War

What happens to the economy when the country is at war? No two conflicts are the same but I suspect many people equate war with recession — when the bombs start to drop, economic gloom deepens.

This is understandable but wrong. It is true that Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait in the summer of 1990 coincided with the start of Britain’s last recession. The Gulf War (which like all other episodes after the Second World War, including Korea and Vietnam, was never declared as a war by America) appeared to the uninitiated to trigger the downturn. In fact, while that conflict was not helpful, particularly as it pushed up oil prices sharply, it played little part in the recession, which had its roots in 15% interest rates, established a year earlier.

In the two main wars of the 20th century, similarly, recession was not a problem. The war effort entailed a big increase in economic activity and productivity. Unemployment was eliminated. The problem, as Lord Skidelsky points out in Fighting for Peace, the third volume of his biography of John Maynard Keynes, was more typically one Breitling Replica Watches of inflation. Prices doubled in the First World War and rose by a half in the Second World War. The reason was not just pressure on capacity and available labor (industrial disputes were common in both wars) but also, and mainly, deficit financing. Taxation accounted for only a third of government spending in the First World War and only just over a half in the second.

I am not suggesting, of course, that we have embarked on a conflict on that scale, al-though I do confess to finding such information fascinating. It also helps put into perspective some of the current worries about the economy. And, at the other end of the scale, there is the worry about policy overreaction, that cuts in interest rates and the “rediscovery of Keynesianism” in Washington mean that unwise decisions are being taken, the result of which will be to worsen economic imbalances and generate high inflation.

These are early days, but the slump school is not yet winning the argument. British shoppers, despite being threatened with every manner of attack on their front pages every day, are still spending strongly, even at Marks & Spencer. My anecdotal evidence is that, outside London, the hotel trade is enjoying a good autumn. Britain’s manufacturers enjoyed an unexpected output boost in August but remain in trouble. They do not, however, appear to be suffering any more than before September 11.

Even in America the picture is less bleak than the doom mongers expected. Take away the crisis in the airline industry and you would be hard pressed to say that much had changed from the admittedly slow-growth picture beforehand. Inflation and war, on the other hand, often do. And inflation at present is an important silver lining among the clouds.

Singapore has few unique culture and things that you cannot find in anywhere in the world. I will show you 7 of them in this article.

Tissue culture in hawker centres and food courts

During lunch hour between 12.00 p.m. to 2.00p.m., if you happen to be in a hawker centre or food court, look around you. You will notice each lady will put a packet of tissue on the table. It seems that this is an unspoken rule that everybody follows. So if next time when you are looking for seat, if you notice a packet of tissue on the table, it means that seat is taken and please don’t take the seat.

Banning of chewing gum

Chewing gum is banned in Singapore under the “Regulation of Imports and Exports (Chewing Gum) Regulations. This law was created in 1992 because people disposed the gum incorrectly. Some have stuck them under MRT chairs, public areas, walls, mailboxes, keyholes or lift buttons. It had increased the maintenance cost and also an ugly sight. 1) Vietnam- it is naturally beautiful and there is just tons to do: going to the beautiful beaches, siteseeing the tourist destinations, bargaining for shopping, shopping at plazas, drinking beer for cheap, cheap food, nice people, etc… very cheap there.. you can find food that is really expensive and food that is really cheap… for example, cheap pho is 15,000 dong which is less than $1. there is expensive pho (at PHO 24) that is 26,000 dong (which is $1.70 or so…)..

2) S. Korea- this place is really nice; it is very developed and business like but also there are tons of shopping and tourist sites. if you have time, you should go to jeju island.. there is beautiful scenery and tons of korean dramas are filmed there. A little expensive.. especially food.

3) Singapore- this place is super clean, but much to do. you can just go around the city and tons to do.

4) Japan- I have never been there, but is is like the New York City in Asia. So much to do. So many people. expensive here… i saw on the travel channel that a capsule hotel is $50… but it has so much to offer.

5) China- it is such a big country, but it is nice there.. i heard. I haven’t been there.

The common reasons that individuals take out travel insurance is to cover their baggage against theft or incase the airlines lose it. What people often neglect is the necessity of having a travel insurance policy that comprehensively covers them for medical emergencies.

A PDS details what the policy covers including what they will pay for certain incidents and any if there are any specified terms and conditions attached. If you have a pre-existing medical condition then you’ll need to check to see if you are still eligible for cover.

In Australia all the major travel insurance companies have websites so it is easy to compare their price and cover. Some of the main companies are: Insure4Less, iTrek, Travel Insurance Direct, World Nomads, 1 Cover, AAMI, Allianz, and Columbus Direct. You can find them and more through your favorite search engine.

Once you are at their website just look for the PDS. It will usually be on the quote and product pages. Read it but don’t be alarmed at how confusing it can look, scroll down to the Schedule of Benefits, a large take with lots of dollar values in it. Make sure the sections labeled Medical Expenses and Medical Evacuation or similar are unlimited or in the millions.

Get a quote for those that offer the cover you want. Narrow your search down to those that offer the lowest premiums for your requirements. Reading online reviews can be very helpful at this stage to make the final decision.

Don’t forget to take precaution for malaria too, very prevalent in poorer SEA countries. For dengue, i don’t think there is any medication/vaccination, you just have to minimize exposure for possible mosquito bites.
Additional information
- Singapore – there is absolutely nothing to worry about. Singapore is super super clean ( one of the cleanest country in the world ). The health level here is excellent.
- Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines – there is also nothing much to worry about unless you wish to venture into more remote areas. Malaysia and Thailand are slightly better off than the other 3 countries.
It’s alright to eat street food here but choose those which you feel are clean. Avoid eating street foods where you see there is no water source
- Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia – these are the countries, where you should take the above precautions. Avoid street food altogether and if possible drink bottled water at all times. Even in restaurants ( unless very upscale ones ), the level of hygiene is below average.

The first thing you have to know is what baby boomers are and what ADEA is all about. First of all, baby boomers are people who were born during the period of increased birth rate. In the United States, baby boomers were born during the time after the World War II conflict and before the Vietnam War. This means that there is more than one generation of baby boomers during this period of time.

Today, baby boomers are now in the age of 40’s to 50’s. ADEA means Age Discrimination in Employment Act. This means that it protects everyone from age discrimination especially people who are in their 40’s to 50’s. This means that if you are a part of the baby boomers population, you have to realize that you still have your rights in the workplace. This means that you shouldn’t be a victim of unemployment just because of your age.

Many people in their 40’s and 50’s find it hard to find a job in the United States just because of their age. If this happens to you, you should file a complaint in the EEOC or the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. In fact, more and more people are now filing complaints about age discrimination in the workplace. The total complaints from 1999 to 2002 have jumped up to 41 percent and are continually increasing.

This is because many employers or companies today are hiring people by not only basing on qualification but also basing on age. This means that even if you are qualified to do the job than other applicants, the chances for you to get hired by the company are slim just because you were born in the baby boomers era.

Baby boomers were born on the post World War II era and before the Vietnam War. This means that baby boomers came of age during the time where they fought for civil rights in the United States. This will mean that you, as a part of the baby boomers population, know well enough about your rights as a citizen of the United States.

Age discrimination is one of the growing problems of the country today. In the workplace, people who are in their 40s and 50s are being discriminated by their coworkers and also by their employers. Some baby boomers lost their jobs just because they were growing old and some are alienated by fellow workers.

The EEOC administers the ADEA. You should know that since 1967, age discrimination against workers who are in their 40s is prohibited and is illegal. You should know that it is your right to have equal employment opportunity.

Baby boomers today are considered to be a group of unhappy people. Besides, they have the right to be unhappy. This is because aside from the slow growth of the economy, high levels of layoffs are also existent. The main targets of layoffs are people who are considered to be part of the baby boomers era. This kind of policy is very unsettling and can make anyone born in the baby boomers era cringe.

You have to realize the fact that the slow moving economy and age bias has a connection. This means that when the opportunities go down, the age discrimination goes up. It is important to remember that no one should be discriminated about anything when it comes to employment. People in the United States have suffered a lot of discrimination. Some were discriminated because of their gender, some were discriminated because of their race, some were discriminated because of their creed and some were discriminated because of their age. All of these forms of discrimination are deemed unethical and illegal. Under the EEOC and the civil law in the United States, everyone should have an equal employment opportunity regardless of gender, race, creed, and age.

This is why it is important to know your rights as a citizen. If you do experience age discrimination, you should contact your nearest EEOC and tell them about the discrimination you experienced when you were applying for a job in a certain company or the age discrimination you experienced when you got laid off from the job.

Remember your rights and you will never have to be a victim of age discrimination. Always remember that ADEA and EEOC will be able to help you with your problems in discrimination in the workplace.

The Vietnam War (now referred to as the Second Indochina War, 1959-1975) is probably one of the best documented wars in world history. The are many many good sources on the war and the topics you need for your paper.

I would start with Stanley Karnow, Vietnam. Probably the definitive narrative book on what happened politically, particularly from the perspective of the United States. A.J. Langguth’s Our Vietnam is also very good in providing narrative detail from both sides. These were top-notch journalists who became historians of the war.

If you want a hindsight view, Robert McNamara wrote two extremely well-written and useful books on the war: In Retrospect and Argument Without End. The latter provides a dialogue between the principals on both sides conducted in the late 1990s. McNamara there goes into great detail what the effects of the war were on both Vietnam and the United States, and provides some lessons to be derived from this tragedy. For a shorter broad overview with new information, you should pick up Turley’s Second Indochina War.

My take on your question would highlight the following. Over 3.8 million people Vietnamese died in the war. Many more were affected by birth defects or psychological trauma as a result of the war. Families were torn apart when elites in the South fled to the US. The War caused the dislocation of thousands more fleeing in boats to refugee camps.

The US lost 58,000 soldiers. Many more wounded. They were not given honor guards or ticker tape parades. They came home and nobody wanted to talk about it. People talked more at the massacre at My Lai and civilian deaths from bombing of North Vietnam than they did about the sacrifices of the American soldiers, sailors and airmen.

Politically, the US suffered substantial damage. The US violated international agreements it pledged to respect in the creation and support of South Vietnam, and then was forced to walk away from that ally. Despite assurances given to President Thieu privately, the US just abandoned South Vietnam to its fate, a conventional assault from the DRV.

The US pledged to multilateralism but then acted primarily unilaterally in prosecuting the war to the horror of its European allies. Congress voted continually against the war from 1969 on, eviscerating what the President was attempting to do in negotiating the best deal it could. The loss in the war substantially eroded our Cold War posture vis-a-vis the Soviet Union and hamstrung Ford and Carter in pursuing containment strategies. The war unleashed a very powerful Vietnam that was able to resist even an invasion from China in 1978.

There are many many more outcomes of the war, all covered in the books I mentioned and others.
