A Good Choice to Discover Ha Long Bay
June 12, 2010
Rated 5 of 5 by Andrew Johnson from Sydney, New South Wales, Australia

Our trip to Ha Long bay was wonderful. We booked package of 2 days+1 night with heritage cruise after getting some recommends from my friends and reviews on the internet .
Heritage cruise has 10 cabins and 2 floors. Each cabin has private bathroom, clean and comfortable. The dinning room and bar is nice and large.
We paid total of 320usd for 4 people (1 twin cabin + 1 double cabin), 80usd for each.
On 23th May,2010. There were about 17 guests on heritage cruise (included us).
We felt really glad to have free party on that night because of one guest’s birthday. We could sing many songs, dance and had free 3 bottles of wine. Our tour guide, was very funny, friendly and helpful. We also had time to fish cuttle with crews and another group in mid night, that was a special experience on Ha Long bay .
On the second day, we got up early and went to sundeck for taking many pictures, that was fantastic. We loved doing kayak in early morning and cruising around luon cave , there was different Ha Long Bay there .
One thing that also made us happy in all tour was meals. They were fresh, delicious and included many kinds of food, most of them was sea food. We only didn’t love so much about breakfast because of bread (we didn’t inform Heritage Cruise before) . We liked to have noodle in morning so we had breakfast later than other groups. Overall, we really had a great trip on the mid range cruise ha long bay. We are going to recommend to our friends and relatives about Heritage Cruise, pay less for the best .

Heritage Cruise – Best cruise ever!”

We were recommended this by our hotel, and following a check on Tripadvisor we book it. We are so glad we did. Its not the cheapest tour out there – i think we paid $175 a head for 3days/2 nights on board with kayaking, but it was worth every penny.
We were collected at our hotel and hopped on a decent air-conditioned bus for the trip out to ha long from hanoi, stopping briefly on the way for break. The boat was lovely. The rooms are small, but they are clean, and after 7pm ice cold thanks to the the air con (which you will need). We had a great time on board. You will not go hungry – there is loads of very fresh, very tasty food. the kayaking was nice on the first day, but the second day was amazing. We were literally on our own for kayaking the second day, but it was simply magical.
After dinner in the evenings, the crew break out the old kareoke machine. A lot of people shyed away from but its great fun, and the staff love it when the guests join in. Also we were squid fishing off the back of the boat. you need a bit of patience and luck, but we caught a couple of biggish ones between us.
A special thank-you to our guide Bang. He was very funny, and very informative and even cooked us lunch on the mini boat after our kayaking. It was my first time trying crab and it was delish!
Another must do is swimming at sunset off the boat. Amazing.
Easily the highlight of our trip so far!

Great Way to See Halong Bay- Ha Long Heritage Cruise and Kayaking Tour.

Ha Long Heritage Cruise & Kayaking Tour

We booked a 3-day, 2-night cruise through our hotel (Hanoi Charming) and were very pleased with the cruise and guide. They picked us up from our hotel and drove us (along a very busy, very bumpy road) to Halong City, about 3 hours total drive time. We stopped once both there at back at the same tourist trap gift market (about 1.5 hours into the drive) to rest, use the bathrooms, and buy snacks or trinkets if wanted.

They take care of buying the tickets, getting you on the boat transfer from a small boat to your main boat, etc. Our main boat, the Hai An, was three stories tall and about 7 or 8 cabins total, and there were only 13 of us on board. That made for a really nice, intimate way to cruise and tour around. The entire top deck was filled with tables and sun chairs so that you could get a great 360 degree view of the bay as you cruised through. (Our guide told us that this boat was only 1 month old.)

Our cabin was a nice full sized bed with air conditioning, window, and private bath. The one drawback was that the air conditioning is only available at night when the boat stops moving and the generators are turned on…which made our room like an oven at times!

The meals on board were amazing: plates and plates of food! Spring rolls, fresh prawns (served several ways), fresh fish, beef dishes, rice, chicken, etc. All good, fresh food. Drinks are not included in the price you pay for the tour – but a bottle of water or can of soda was around $1 US and a can of beer was around $1.50; certainly not unreasonable considering on other cruises we have been on, we have been charged $5 US for a can of beer.

We visited a huge cave, went sea kayaking, visited a floating fishing village, and enjoyed the beautiful sights of Halong Bay. Our guide, Peter, was funny and engaging – and the entire staff was just really pleasant and willing to please.

Unfortunately, our tour was cut short by 1 day (and 1 night) because of an impending typhoon in the area. While disappointed, we were refunded in full for the portion of the trip that was cancelled.

A nice way to experience Halong Bay: great boat, great staff, great food, and not a lot of other passengers!

Hotel recommendations for Mui Ne Beach in Vietnam?

Thanks guys for info on Dalat, have now changed my mind and considering Mui Ne.Any one been there? Sights to see? Places to stay with air con and pool?

Answer
There’s this place that i’ve been to and it’s called Phan Tiet that is kinda near Mui Ne…and sorry if i’m wrong but , i think that either near Phan Tiet, or Mui Ne, there’s this huge sand hill, and the sand is reddish orangish, and you can sled there if you pay some money. something interesting about that sand hill is that i think due to wind, it changes it’s shape frequently. oh and sorry if something is wrong, or mispelled or something. oh and i think that the last answerer had a good recommendation about the resorts. i stayed in a resort when i went and it was pretty good. hope this helps.

What is the best way to ship furniture from Vietnam to the US, and how does one arrange to use this method?

I am planning on buying a significant number of pieces of furniture when visiting Vietnam in a few months, and wanted to better understand my shipping options in advance.

Answer
You want to contact a freight forwarding service or a shipping broker. The vendor that you buy the furniture from should be able to help you out with this. If they don’t, go to the nearest DHL office and ask them for a contact or call my brother-in-law:

In the second half of the twentieth century, the electorate learned that judging a candi-date on stands on issues was not a totally reliable predictor of his or her conduct in of-fice. Some candidates acted against voter expectations: Lyndon Johnson, elected in 1964 as the peace candidate, escalated the war in Vietnam. Some presidents proved unable to meet their objectives. John Kennedy did not succeed in translating his cam-paign promises into law; only after his death did his successor secure passage of some of Kennedy’s key initiatives. Jimmy Carter, elected to bring the budget into balance and lower inflation and unemployment, had not accomplished these goals by the end of his first term. Bill Clinton failed to make good on his campaign promise to deliver a health care reform plan that could be financed by cost savings in the existing system. It is im?portant to note, however, that, at the presidential level at least, more than two-thirds of the time those elected make a substantial effort to keep their promises. From this per?spective, one might note that Clinton tried to keep his promise to reform the health care system but was thwarted by the intransigence of his own party and the opposition of the Republican minority. Meanwhile, the character of a candidate seemed increasingly important in judging performance in office. Whether a person was truthful and trustworthy was a focal con?cern of those probing the failures of Johnson’s handling of the Vietnam War, Nixon’s handling of Watergate, and Clinton’s handling of Whitewater and the Lewinsky affair; whether a person was competent was central to those probing the failures of the presi?dencies of Ford and Carter; whether a person was candid about his health was of con?cern to those who learned of Kennedy’s Addison’s disease only after his death. What can and does television tell us about issues and the character of presidential candidates? Thomas Sabo Determining Which Issues Are the Likely Focus of a Campaign In their own ads, in debates, and in news clips, candidates reveal their popular past positions and conceal their unpopular ones. At the same time, candidates reveal the unpopular past positions of their opponents. Public opinion polls and focus group tests (analysis of the response of small groups to various messages) help campaigns determine which issues will reso-nate with which voting group. When an issue is controversial but nonetheless beneficial to one side or the other, that issue is more likely to be raised in the ads and news coverage of a political action For example, in 1982, nationally syndicated columnist George Will evaluated charges made by senatorial aspirant Bruce F. Caputo against incumbent senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan and concluded: “Caputo asserts that Moynihan Voted against capital punishment.’ Moynihan favors capital punishment for certain crimes. There has been no direct vote on capital punishment since Moynihan entered the Senate. Caputo is referring to procedural votes that reveal more about the parliamentary context at the time than Moynihan’s views on the subject.”12 When candidates believe they have been unfairly attacked, they often attempt to enlist the aid of the media in combating the attack. Journalists can be drawn into the campaign as arbiters of the truth or falsity of attacks by the attacker, by the person attacked, or by the dynamics of the interchange itself.

Travel in Viet Nam with haivenu tour

Vietnam’s Destination

This section of the web site contains an overview of the many attractions that Vietnam has to offer, designed with tourism and travel in Vietnam in mind. Where comments and opinions are expressed, they are a combination of our subjective views and feedback from former customers.

Vietnam
In general, the best way to enjoy most places in Vietnam is to travel between urban centres and use them as a base to explore the areas in and around them. Long distances and the country’s limited transport infrastructure makes a linear tour impractical if visitors want to experience more than one or two of Vietnam’s regions.

The North

Hanoi
Vietnam’s capital city, Hanoi, is just over half the size of its southern counterpart. Like Ho Chi Minh City, it is expanding. It’s more stately and calmer than its boisterous offspring, with tree-lined boulevards and large colonial villas, many of which are now embassies or government buildings, and its prices are more reasonable. It is surrounded by many ‘craft villages’, each specialising in a specific traditional craft.

Hai Phong
Vietnam’s third city is Hai Phong, with just under two million people. Also in the north, about a hundred kilometres from Hanoi, it is the country’s main seaport. Hai Phong is close to Cat Ba Island and is an entry point to Ha Long Bay

Ha Long City
Ha Long City has a population is around 200,000. It is a comparatively recent amalgamation of a major tourist area with a heavy industrial mining town: initially uneasy bedfellows, the two elements are now fusing. Apart from being the main access point for Ha Long Bay, it is also a centre for Quang Ninh Province and the northeast.

Dien Bien Phu and Sa Pa
These two small towns are the main centres for the northwest mountains.

The Centre

Da Nang
Da Nang, in central Vietnam, is an expanding port and industrial area: its population is now well over a million. It is an attractive centre for three World Heritage areas: Hue Imperial City, Hoi An Ancient Town and the My Son Sanctuary, as well as being very close to some excellent coastal resorts.

Hue
Hue is relatively small – less than a third of a million – but enjoys the status of being the ancient Imperial City (and the income from armies of tourists!). It is also a centre for visits to Quang Tri Province and the Demilitarized Zone.

Nha Trang
Nha Trang, Vietnam’s premier resort with a population of about 320,000, is an attractive destination for beach lovers and divers. It is also the main access point to the Central Highlands from the coast.

Dalat
On the southern end of the central highland plateau, the temperate climate of Dalat attracts many Vietnamese tourists to swell its 150,000 population. Other small towns further north, such as Buon Ma Thuot, are also important centres for visitors to the Central Highlands.

The South

Ho Chi Minh City
Ho Chi Minh City, the former Saigon, is by far the largest urban centre in Vietnam. It has a population of around five and a half million, a figure that is expanding rapidly as poor people migrate to the wealth of the metropolis. Saigon is the country’s main commercial area: brash, noisy and, in Vietnamese terms, expensive. People seldom seem to be indifferent about it – they either love or hate the place.

Can Tho
Can Tho is a town of about 300,000 people and is regarded as the centre for the Mekong Delta area.

How to promote the positive images of vietnam?

Have anyone here ever been to Vietnam? If yes, can u please suggest ways to promote the positive images of vietnam in tourism industry ?What can we do to attract more tourists?

Answer
I went back for several weeks in the fall of 1995 and even then, Vietnam had already improved so much over what it was in the 1960’s. It was wonderful to visit both the North and the South and saw the country, so beautiful and modernizing and the people, so friendly and forgiving, finally had the peace that they so richly deserve.

When I was in Hanoi, I ran into a group of active US servicemen who were members of an MIA recovery team who happened to be staying at the same hotel I was staying at. They told me they encountered no hostilities from anyone in Vietnam and met nothing but friendliness and cooperation from the government to the people.

U.S. veterans I met on the streets and in museums and restaurants told me the same thing. What’s more, they told me their visits to Vietnam had helped so much in their healing process. They thought they could replace the horrible images of war with those happy ones they saw on their latest visits whenever they thought of Vietnam.

Vietnam needs to hire good American public relations/advertising firms to change the perception of the country still in the minds of many Americans, especially those over the age of 50 who still remember the images of Vietnam at war. When the Japanese began to sell cars en mass in America in the late 1970’s, they had to do the same thing as most Americans at that time thought of Japanese products as cheap but low in quality. It takes a lot of education to undo a prejudice.

Giving free tours of Vietnam to American travel agents, travel writers and tour operators is another way. They only need to report the truth of what they see there and tourism to Vietnam will substancially increase.

Already, there are over 300,000 American citizens visiting Vietnam each year, 100,000 (mostly Americans of Vietnamese descent) over the Tet holidays alone. But the number could be many times that when Vietnam is able to attract Americans of all backgrounds.

Who wouldn’t enjoy a beautiful country with lots of historical and natural sites, friendly and courteous people, safe and secure society, first class lodging facilities, delicious and exciting foods and what’s more, very reasonable prices…that is indeed Vietnam. I’m ready to go back later this year with my family!

Vietnam muon nam! (Long live Vietnam!)

Spice Up your Life with Cooking Courses In Southeast Asia

Coconut milk soup. Spicy prawns. Scallion fried noodles and ginger roasted fresh fish. Oh, to eat in Asia! Streets filled with the aromas of onions sizzling in oil and vegetables cooking over hot coals. No matter where you go in Southeast Asia, it seems that, around every bend, there is a new set of enticing smells and delicious tastes. One could literally spend a lifetime just soaking up the food cultures across Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, not to even mention the amazing cuisines of East Asia.

But what about actually cooking some of these things yourself? With so many exotic flavours and unique spices, it might seem totally daunting to learn to cook Asian food, but actually, many Southeast Asian dishes are incredibly simple to make, not to mention healthy. Of course, it’s not all about stir-frying. For instance, in Laos, most dishes are grilled or steamed, and in Thailand, roasting fish over open flame is a common method of cooking, especially in the island communities.

If you have been considering taking an Asian cooking course, why not skip your local culinary school at home and make a total holiday out of it? Asian culinary holidays have become increasingly popular over the past decade, with a number of wonderful restaurants and chefs opening up cooking schools to educate visitors and food-lovers from around the world in the indelible art of Asian cooking. And it’s no wonder, considering how popular Asian cuisines are the world over. Chinese food is the most highly exported cuisine in the world, but Thai Food, Vietnamese and even Cambodian and Laotian food have made huge strides in countries around the world.

Perhaps you are thinking that you’re not a good enough cook to enrol in one of these fancy food schools, or maybe you’re worried that you’ll make a mockery of yourself. In fact, each of these cuisine-based holidays is designed for beginner and casual cooks, rather than experienced chefs. You’ll come away with basic recipes for all sorts of authentic Southeast Asian dishes, as well as proper preparation skills taught by local chefs. After all, what is the point in learning to make Pad Thai if you aren’t chopping the scallions correctly?

ZiZ Inspire offers a number of cooking course options throughout Southeast Asia, including Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia and Laos, and each of these teaches a unique, local method of cooking. One better? The courses are all set in fabulous locations, such as on a rooftop terrace overlooking Phnom Penh at the famous Frizz Restaurant, in a luxury resort next to the ancient temples at Angkor Wat in Cambodia or in a traditional Thai house in Bangkok.

Most of the Southeast Asian cooking classes on offer on ZiZ Inpsire, including Thai Cooking Classes, are half or one-day affairs. You’ll start your day learning the basics of the local spices, herbs and ingredients and how these combine together to form the familiar and exotic flavours you’ve lingered over in restaurants at home.

Next, you’ll venture out into the steamy streets to a local market, where you’ll purchase all of your ingredients fresh directly from the farmers. Forget about store-bought and packaged vegetables; you’ll pick up deep purple aubergines, crispy lettuce still warm from the dirt, chicken cutlets chosen directly from the bird and herbs and spices that you’ll chop and prepare yourself. The lively surroundings of the market will entice and inspire your meal, and maybe you’ll come across some in-season ingredients to make your flavours completely unique.

With an armload of fresh vegetables, herbs and meats, you’ll head back to the scenic school and spend the day preparing a feast under the caring and watchful eyes of trained local chefs who really know what they are doing. Not only are these guys professionals, but they spent their childhoods watching their mothers prepare these dishes at home everyday, so they impart to you an authenticity to the cooking that you literally can’t find elsewhere.

The best part about enrolling in an Asian cooking class? Getting to eat the meal, of course! The classes range from learning how to make one or two simple dishes in an afternoon to cooking an entire 5-course dinner, on which you will feast after spending your entire day in preparation. There is really nothing like tasting a meal that you yourself have created from raw ingredients that were, just a day or two before, still in the soil. And after spending the entire day sniffing the wonderful aromas of ginger, green onions, fish sauce, coconut and exotic spices cooking around you, your stomach will be ready to indulge in all of the delicious treats you’ve made from scratch.

You might be thinking that an Asian cooking course sounds fantastic but totally out of your price range, but you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the prices. For instance, a half-day cooking course in Vientiane, Laos teaches you how to make spicy green papaya salad and other herb-marinated meat dishes for just $40, including transportation to and from your hotel and a visit to the city’s bustling Thong Khan Kham farmer’s market. Private classes for two are also available, which makes for a really romantic couple’s activity or a great chance to learn a new skill with a friend.

Meanwhile, a 4-hour class at Baipei Thai Cooking School in Bangkok runs $60, including transportation to and from your hotel. You’ll of course get to eat what you cook here, too, and the classes, which are held in a specialised kitchen inside a traditional Thai house, are small at a maximum of only 11 students.

No matter which Asian cooking class you decide to enrol in, you will come away with an unforgettable experience learning to cook in an authentic Asian environment in some of the most unique surroundings in Asia. You’ll also come away with some fantastic skills and recipes that are sure to wow your guests and friends at future dinner parties or potlucks, and that is completely priceless.

How much would a coin be worth for Vietnam?

My grandpa fought in the Vietnam war and he gave me a penny that they used because they ran out of copper at the time and I think it was made out of lead. Anyways I was wondering how much do you think the penny would be worth? Not that I’m planning on selling it or anything but I’m just curious. Any ideas?
*How much would a coin be worth from Vietnam?

Answer
Hey! I don’t know how much it’ worth, but it also depend on the type of currency, you know North or South.
Well i guess it’ll worth about one to couple hundred bucks because it very rare to find South Vietnam currencies, because that country doesn’t exist any more. Sad though.

About North Vietnamese currency, i don’t care much.

I know that you can get Cambodian visa from the border but for Vietnam, you have to get it from an embassy on the way. I don’t think you would need a visa for Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore..

A Tryst with Exotica The Barbecue in Southeast Asia

Tracing its beginnings perhaps to Early Man himself, the barbecue exists in various forms all across the globe. It may vary in the equipment and ingredients used, but the basic technique is still recognizable all over the world. The most exotic variety, however, at least by way of spice and taste, is the Southeast Asian, particularly the Indonesian variety of the barbecue.

In the Southeast Asian countries of Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, and the Philippines, the style of grilled meat is known as the satay. Usually a dish consisting of diced or sliced chicken, goat, mutton, beef, pork, and fish, or even tofu, satay was traditionally prepared using skewers from the midrib of the coconut leaf. Bamboo skewers are also used. In some parts of Indonesia, even sugarcane or lemon grass sticks are used. The satay is grilled over a wood or charcoal fire and then served with spicy seasonings.

Satay is an extremely popular food in Indonesia and Malaysia, and in Indonesia, the satay can be had from a traveling satay vendor, or from a street side satay, at a sophisticated restaurant, or at home during festivals. The Indonesians regard it as their national dish. In Malaysia too, the satay is popular throughout the country, especially during traditional feasts.

What really sets this style of barbecue apart from the others is not the preparation itself, (for that has a lot in common the Japanese, Chinese, and Turkish preparations) but the spices, sauces, and accompaniments that bring out this uniquely flavored dish.

Turmeric is an essential element in this barbecue, providing the yellow color to the dish. The satay is sometimes served with a peanut sauce dip, or even peanut gravy, slivers of onion and cucumbers, and interestingly, rice cakes. Pork satay is known to be served with a pineapple-based satay sauce or a cucumber relish. Variations of the satay across Indonesia use ingredients as diverse as cumin powder, fresh sliced chilli and shallots, coconuts, and even flower buds. Some varieties of the satay are even served without sauce.

The meats used for the satay also range from the predictable to the bizarre. Migrating sea birds, softshell turtles, cobras and pythons, lizards, immature chicken eggs, and even eels are used with abandon in Indonesia.

Ready to take a bite? So for a taste of the exotic Orient, try the satay this season, give the unusual a chance and you may come back changed!

What are the best countries to travel in Asia for fresh graduates looking for adventure and new culture?

TAKE NOTE: we are on a tight budget…
also, exclude Philippines (it’s our home country)….

Answer
I agree with Ed B. Singapore would be the last place you would go on a tight budget. It would also be the last place you would go if you are looking for adventure and new culture. Clean, tidy, modern, and organized it may be, but it is like one big apartment complex/shopping mall with restaurents. The main things Singaporeans think about is working, shopping, eating and wearing the right labels.
Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam would suit your criteria perfectly.
