Student Traveller Tips to Keeping Your Things Safe THE SMART BACKPACKER

Congratulations! You have just made your choice of lugging around wherever what would be technically your “home” for the duration of your trip. Choosing the indie backpacker way for travel is already a decision to keeping your thingamajigs safer. However, backpackers continue to ask the immortal question of how you really keep your things safe during voyage, with extreme stress to travel in most parts of Asia or Africa.

Hit the Sack.

This is among the most vital things you should hit right. The backpack need not be simply sturdy and reliable. It has to be the right pack for the traveller and the traveller’s custom needs. This sets apart the genuine backpackers from the wannabes. Three C’s: comfort, convenience, and capacity.

Comfort equals padding, padding on the belts and straps of the hips, waist, chest, and shoulders. The major weight of your bag must set on the hips, and minor on the shoulders. Convenience also pertains to design, particularly the loading. Also, compartments and chimney make all the difference. And Capacity…your pack should stay within the carry-on limit in terms of size, weight, and contents. Airlines may vary in maximum weight allowance from 10 – 30 kg each for checked and carry-on bags. Remember to lock and label, and ensure it can stand against knife-slashing.

Camouflage.

Animals are smart to take this on instinctively. Dress up or down as locals do to avoid eliciting unwanted attention and be the target of felons. Looking as though you’ve spent a long time in the area might reduce threats of stealing and even getting ripped. Keep that Submariner in your pocket and use that cheap mobile you got on a bargain to check the time. In some countries in South East Asia (SEA), the mobile is a socio-economic status indicator, so definitely, the uglier the better. Learning the basic conversation pieces in local vernacular will also help a lot.

Stick It.

If you have a safe deposit box in the hotel you’re staying, GREAT! You can leave SOME of your travel money and valuables here. Still, keep your things on you like your passport and credit cards. These two are the top concerns when travelling. Your original passport is best kept in a hotel safe if provided. Instead, carry around 2 certified photocopies of your passport with your National ID. Have a small travel bag for these essentials, or a sling bag you can hang around your neck and tuck under your shirt.

The key is to diversify your hidey-holes. Then, stash money in your shoes, socks, belt bag, and deep side pockets (never the back pockets). So should the traveller come across such a situation, know for a fact that a thief has not so much time. Effective…albeit unglamorous and undignified.

String It.

One cool strategy is stringing your stuff together, so when a no-good doer attempts something unlawful at you, it will surprise the pickpockets as if he’s been had with a bag of tricks. The crook might freak out and just drop what he tried to take from you. This is highly suggestive in some parts of Southeast Asia and Africa, specifically in an overly crowded area as the market. In addition, this makes for an innovative organization technique presenting a less painful way of looking through your paraphernalia. Know, though, the fundamental, that is to stuff the bulky in your pack, and never your valuables.

Leave It.

Understanding all the issues and hassles of bringing valuables in backpack travel, it is vital to reassess how badly you need to take some of your pricey loot with you, like a laptop or camera. Theft, loss, and damage are absolutely important considerations when preparing your stuff. The less you bring, the less you worry. In Johannesburg, South Africa, for instance, no amount of safety precaution will save you and your valuables when a robber spots you. Discretion is not a word in their vocabulary, unlike slick pickpockets in Thailand or Philippines.

Travelling with your pack, it is rather hard to refrain from carrying your valuables. Some quirky advices involve using and abusing people’s vulnerability for religion. In a Muslim country, lug around a book of sayings of the Prophet Mohammed, or in Christian nations, a Bible. Yet all the advice in the world will not ever beat this one word, AWARENESS. Treat your things as an extension of your body and keep a close eye to people and surroundings. This article is not to advise against trusting people and making friends. In fact, make a million friends, smile and be nice so people will be discouraged against doing you wrong. The most important thing is that you enjoy your trip.

Spice Up your Life with Cooking Courses In Southeast Asia

Coconut milk soup. Spicy prawns. Scallion fried noodles and ginger roasted fresh fish. Oh, to eat in Asia! Streets filled with the aromas of onions sizzling in oil and vegetables cooking over hot coals. No matter where you go in Southeast Asia, it seems that, around every bend, there is a new set of enticing smells and delicious tastes. One could literally spend a lifetime just soaking up the food cultures across Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, not to even mention the amazing cuisines of East Asia.

But what about actually cooking some of these things yourself? With so many exotic flavours and unique spices, it might seem totally daunting to learn to cook Asian food, but actually, many Southeast Asian dishes are incredibly simple to make, not to mention healthy. Of course, it’s not all about stir-frying. For instance, in Laos, most dishes are grilled or steamed, and in Thailand, roasting fish over open flame is a common method of cooking, especially in the island communities.

If you have been considering taking an Asian cooking course, why not skip your local culinary school at home and make a total holiday out of it? Asian culinary holidays have become increasingly popular over the past decade, with a number of wonderful restaurants and chefs opening up cooking schools to educate visitors and food-lovers from around the world in the indelible art of Asian cooking. And it’s no wonder, considering how popular Asian cuisines are the world over. Chinese food is the most highly exported cuisine in the world, but Thai Food, Vietnamese and even Cambodian and Laotian food have made huge strides in countries around the world.

Perhaps you are thinking that you’re not a good enough cook to enrol in one of these fancy food schools, or maybe you’re worried that you’ll make a mockery of yourself. In fact, each of these cuisine-based holidays is designed for beginner and casual cooks, rather than experienced chefs. You’ll come away with basic recipes for all sorts of authentic Southeast Asian dishes, as well as proper preparation skills taught by local chefs. After all, what is the point in learning to make Pad Thai if you aren’t chopping the scallions correctly?

ZiZ Inspire offers a number of cooking course options throughout Southeast Asia, including Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia and Laos, and each of these teaches a unique, local method of cooking. One better? The courses are all set in fabulous locations, such as on a rooftop terrace overlooking Phnom Penh at the famous Frizz Restaurant, in a luxury resort next to the ancient temples at Angkor Wat in Cambodia or in a traditional Thai house in Bangkok.

Most of the Southeast Asian cooking classes on offer on ZiZ Inpsire, including Thai Cooking Classes, are half or one-day affairs. You’ll start your day learning the basics of the local spices, herbs and ingredients and how these combine together to form the familiar and exotic flavours you’ve lingered over in restaurants at home.

Next, you’ll venture out into the steamy streets to a local market, where you’ll purchase all of your ingredients fresh directly from the farmers. Forget about store-bought and packaged vegetables; you’ll pick up deep purple aubergines, crispy lettuce still warm from the dirt, chicken cutlets chosen directly from the bird and herbs and spices that you’ll chop and prepare yourself. The lively surroundings of the market will entice and inspire your meal, and maybe you’ll come across some in-season ingredients to make your flavours completely unique.

With an armload of fresh vegetables, herbs and meats, you’ll head back to the scenic school and spend the day preparing a feast under the caring and watchful eyes of trained local chefs who really know what they are doing. Not only are these guys professionals, but they spent their childhoods watching their mothers prepare these dishes at home everyday, so they impart to you an authenticity to the cooking that you literally can’t find elsewhere.

The best part about enrolling in an Asian cooking class? Getting to eat the meal, of course! The classes range from learning how to make one or two simple dishes in an afternoon to cooking an entire 5-course dinner, on which you will feast after spending your entire day in preparation. There is really nothing like tasting a meal that you yourself have created from raw ingredients that were, just a day or two before, still in the soil. And after spending the entire day sniffing the wonderful aromas of ginger, green onions, fish sauce, coconut and exotic spices cooking around you, your stomach will be ready to indulge in all of the delicious treats you’ve made from scratch.

You might be thinking that an Asian cooking course sounds fantastic but totally out of your price range, but you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the prices. For instance, a half-day cooking course in Vientiane, Laos teaches you how to make spicy green papaya salad and other herb-marinated meat dishes for just $40, including transportation to and from your hotel and a visit to the city’s bustling Thong Khan Kham farmer’s market. Private classes for two are also available, which makes for a really romantic couple’s activity or a great chance to learn a new skill with a friend.

Meanwhile, a 4-hour class at Baipei Thai Cooking School in Bangkok runs $60, including transportation to and from your hotel. You’ll of course get to eat what you cook here, too, and the classes, which are held in a specialised kitchen inside a traditional Thai house, are small at a maximum of only 11 students.

No matter which Asian cooking class you decide to enrol in, you will come away with an unforgettable experience learning to cook in an authentic Asian environment in some of the most unique surroundings in Asia. You’ll also come away with some fantastic skills and recipes that are sure to wow your guests and friends at future dinner parties or potlucks, and that is completely priceless.

How much would a coin be worth for Vietnam?

My grandpa fought in the Vietnam war and he gave me a penny that they used because they ran out of copper at the time and I think it was made out of lead. Anyways I was wondering how much do you think the penny would be worth? Not that I’m planning on selling it or anything but I’m just curious. Any ideas?
*How much would a coin be worth from Vietnam?

Answer
Hey! I don’t know how much it’ worth, but it also depend on the type of currency, you know North or South.
Well i guess it’ll worth about one to couple hundred bucks because it very rare to find South Vietnam currencies, because that country doesn’t exist any more. Sad though.

About North Vietnamese currency, i don’t care much.

Finding Quality Beans For Your Coffee Makers

Coffee requires very special climatic conditions to thrive, and it only grows in tropical areas with a steady supply of rain and sunshine.  Even so, from its origins in Ethiopia, where most of the beans are still harvested from wild plants, coffee production has spread around the globe. The main producing areas are centered on the equator, in a slim band twenty five degrees to the north and south. Over seventy nations produce the beans, and the commercial value of coffee today is astonishing.

Almost a third of global production occurs in Brazil.  Columbia is the second largest producer, although it is perhaps the better known for producing fine roasts.  Coming in third is Indonesia, followed closely by Mexico, where a smaller bean produces a very distinctive taste.  Although coffee beans can thrive at any altitude, the best quality beans are often produced in higher areas.

Brazilian coffee production is characterized by large, highly ordered plantations that provide work for thousands of workers.  Coffee growing in Columbia, on the other hand, tends to be done at higher altitude, in smaller areas located in rugged mountainous terrain. Poor economic conditions mean that getting the beans from their point of origin to the processing plants often makes use of mules, or possibly jeeps for richer coffee farmers.

Although only a small amount of coffee is produced there, Hawaii has ideal conditions for coffee production.  The plants flourish in the dark volcanic ash of the Mauna Loa volcano, where hot sun and regular showers ensure the perfect environment for producing high quality coffee.

Colonization of Indonesia by the Dutch in the seventeenth century introduced coffee plants to the country that is really a collection of thousands of small islands.  The humid, balmy micro-climates of this area more than make up for the lack of high tech coffee producing equipment, and farms on three of the largest islands Sumatra, Java and Sulawesi produce most of the country’s exported coffee.

A challenge to Indonesia’s supremacy in that part of the world is Vietnam, who are beginning to produce a large volume of quality coffee after years of standing still economically.  Initially Arabica trees were introduced to Vietnam by missionaries from France, but the main plant grown there now is Robusta.

Robusta is also produced in large quantities in Africa, particularly the Ivory Coast area.  Africa is a relatively small coffee producer in terms of volume, but the quality of certain roasts, particularly a fruity blend from Kenya, cannot be rivaled.  The overall flavor of African coffee comes from the large, dark beans produced there and makes these coffees stand out from South American or Asian brews.

So next time you go to the kitchen to make yourself a cup of coffee, take a moment to consider the origins of the coffee grinds in your espresso machines or coffee makers, and the sort of conditions that were necessary to bring you the perfect cup.

What is communism and why did Americans fight in the Vietnam War to stop it?

I don’t really understand it but I want to know what it is and why Americans joined the Vietnam war to stop it.

Answer
It’s what everyone was told they were fighting against…in reality, they were fighting for control of the rice, rubber and other natural resources that Vietnam is rich in.

Prepare For Your Holiday To Thailand

Nicknamed ‘the land of 1,000 smiles’, Thailand’s tranquil beaches and bustling cities make a great place to escape to if you’re a holiday maker in search of culture and relaxation in equal measure. Drawing thousands of travel happy visitors every year, Thailand can be an experience of a life time as long as you put in the right amount of preparation before your trip.

One of the most important things to consider before going to Thailand is vaccinations. While the majority of the Western world is lucky enough to enjoy relatively few water, insect and air borne diseases, the warmer climates in the East mean diseases such as typhoid, Hep A and malaria are well worth being vaccinated for. Almost every general practitioner will be happy to vaccinate you against diseases such as these; just remember to give your doctor prior notice of which vaccines you require as they may need to be ordered in.

With accommodation from as little as £2 a day, Thailand’s appeal doesn’t just apply to those with deep pockets. Staying in cheap hostels and B&Bs is a great way to save money but also posses risks of its own. While hotel beds are changed on a daily basis, beds in hostels can sometimes be used by more than one guest which is unhygienic. Investing in a silk sleeping bag is a great way to protect yourself against mites that could be living in bed sheets but also helps to cool you down; a wise choice given temperatures in Thailand can exceed 30c at night time.

When it comes to drinking water, any holiday maker who is travelling from outside Asia should be careful about drinking tap water or water from outside sources such as wells and pumps. Drinking water from sources such as these can contain bacteria that our bodies are unfamiliar to which can in turn cause digestive upsets. To avoid this, always drink water from a sealed bottle from either a vending machine or shop. Buying bottled water from street sellers does pose a small amount of risk however, as used bottles can sometimes be refilled with contaminated drinking water. To avoid this, do not drink water from a bottle that is not sealed or looks to have been resealed with glue.

Finally, Thailand’s markets are certainly one thing on your trip that shouldn’t be missed. Vibrant, lively and full of different sights, sounds and smells, they’re are a doorway to another culture. With plenty of street stalls and buyers bartering and haggling for the best deal there’s no reason why you can’t join in the fun! In situations such as these however, it’s advisable to leave any expensive jewellery at home or in a secure safe in your hotel room. Another wise investment is a money bag which is worn under your base layer of clothing. Unlike a handbag, this cannot be broken into by pickpockets and allows you to get lost in the thick of the action without falling victim to opportunistic thieves.

Preparation is the key to success when planning a successful trip abroad. While some activities can be decided when you arrive in Thailand other things cannot be left to the last moment. All documentation such as health insurance, life insurance and travel insurance should also be arranged before you leave and are vital to a stress-free, relaxed holiday in the ‘Land of 1,000 smiles.’

Answer
I’ve got many friends from UK who loves the Island they called their second home – Penang (Malaysia). It may not be as posh as Singapore, or advanced like Chinese Taipei (Taiwan) or Super-standard like Japan, yet Penang is the choice of many a Global travellers as it has a balance of many things, such as a unique heritage, nature, beaches, food (yes, best area to get the most delicious yet cheap cuisine in Malaysia!), shopping (may not be as many Kuala Lumpur, but hey, many loved shopping here in Penang, as bargains are possible in local retails and markets) and it multiculturalism (Penang Hokkien, a Chinese dialect now made fame for hereditary). Also, you have a choice of accommodations from YMCA/YWCA to motels, from hotels to resorts. Trishaws are famous here, same for the unique Peranakan (Baba-Nyonya or Straits Chinese) culture as well as the famous ferry, transporting people and vehicles between Weld Quay (Island Jetty) and Butterworth (Mainland).

Vietnam Accommodation Which one suitables for your budget

During the majority of your trip to Vietnam, you’ll stay in simple but comfortable, hotels and guesthouses. These are, wherever possible, brimming with Vietnamese charm and owned by local people. The rooms in these properties always have private ensuite bathrooms. Occasionally, there will be the added perk of a swimming pool. Hotels in Vietnam in more isolated locations – small islands and jungles – is often quite simple. Equally, if you choose to stay with the hill tribes in the north, you will find that provisions are pretty primitive. There are no hotels or guesthouses in this remote territory, which makes such modules outstanding for their cultural authenticity.

It should be noted that our categories are not official star ratings.

Comfort Level 1: Very simple accommodation
This is basic Vietnam accommodation, in a hill tribe hut or stilted house. You will be provided with a mattress on the wooden floor. Showers are behind the fence alongside the stream. You will stay in one of the hill tribe huts courtesy of a village family. Cosy, very authentic and positively primitive.

Comfort Level 2: Simple accommodation
Simple but reasonably comfortable. Examples of Level 2 accommodation include a cabin or room with its own small bathroom. In such circumstances there is usually a fan, and sometimes even air-conditioning. These hotels generally possess an authentic atmosphere and/or are situated in a particularly spectacular location.

Comfort Level 3: Comfortable accommodation
Most of the hotels in Vietnam offered by Vietnam Travel Plan falls within this category. You can expect a mid-range bungalow or hotel/guesthouse room with bathroom, fan and usually air-conditioning. Sometimes you will even find a swimming pool on the premises.

Comfort Level 4: Very comfortable accommodation
At this level of Vietnam accommodation, things begin to get a little more luxurious. You will be accommodated within a spacious bungalow or room with fan and air-conditioned, and you will usually find a swimming pool in the property.

Comfort Level 5: Luxury accommodation
Spacious bungalow or deluxe hotel room with luxurious furnishings, large bathroom and air-conditioning, within very stylish properties. You can expect swimming pools in all Level 5 accommodation in Vietnam (with the exception of Hanoi). Prepare to be pampered.

How can I replace a lost Vietnam passport and green card that was lost in Vietnam?

Can someone tell me how to replace a lost Vietnam passport? Is there a site to order a replacement? Just out of curiousity, is it required to have a passport to come back to the US permanently if I was a former resident (not citizen) of the US? Also, if my mom lived in the US for two years, can she ‘invite’ me back without a passport or green card? Thanks for any answers!

Answer
you can never get in the U.S. with out passport. if you do it illegal like some you lose your right to ever enter again legal.

About the Country
Japan consists of four main islands and several smaller ones. Together the islands take the shape of a sea horse and occupy an area of 377,435 square kms. Tokyo, the capital city, is very modern and bustling with activity, so when you travel to Japan, be ready for a few crowds. The landscape of Japan, away from the big cities, is mountainous with spectacular scenery; some of the mountains are volcanic. Mt. Fuji is the tallest mountain in Japan, and is known for its symmetrical slopes.

About the Climate
When you travel to Japan, it’s important to know the country’s seasons and when they occur during the year. The islands of Japan lie in the temperate and at the northeastern end of the monsoon area. The climate is generally mild, although it varies considerably from place to place when you travel Japan. Summer, which is warm and mild, begins around the middle of July following a rainy season that usually lasts for a month. Except in northern Japan the winter is mild with many sunny days. Spring and autumn are the best seasons of the year with balmy days and bright sunshine.

About the People
Before you depart to travel Japan, it’s a good idea to get a sense of the people and their culture. Japan is one of the most densely populated nations in the world, with some 330 persons per square kilometer (almost 860 persons per sq. mi.). The Japanese are a Mongoloid people, closely related to the major groups of East Asia. However, some evidence also exists of a mixture with Malayan and Caucasoid strains. About 750,000 Koreans and much smaller groups of Chinese and Caucasians reside in Japan.

Religious Beliefs
When you travel Japan, you will be exposed to a new world of religious and personal beliefs. Buddhism is important in Japan’s religious life and has strongly influenced fine arts, social institutions, and philosophy. Most Japanese consider themselves members of one of the major Buddhist sects.

Shintoism is an indigenous religion founded on myths, legends, and ritual practices of the early Japanese. Neither Buddhism nor Shintoism is an exclusive religion. Most Japanese observe both Buddhist and Shinto rituals: the former for funerals and the latter for births, marriages, and other occasions. Confucianism, primarily an ethical system, profoundly influences Japanese thought as well.

About 1.3 million people in Japan are Christians, of whom 60% are Protestant and 40% Roman Catholic.

Online Entrepreneurship – Your Chance to Live and Work Anywhere

For me, one of the great perks of having an online business is the ability to live and work from anywhere. Really, what other job gives you the same kind of freedom of mobility?! As internet entrepreneurs, we have the opportunity to take advantage of this – which is a luxury that previous generations before us never had. Most online businesses require only an internet connection and a phone line…both of which are readily available virtually everywhere one would care to travel.

Personally, I’ve spent over two years of my life abroad – most recently in Asia where I was working my business this Fall. It was an awesome experience that I would highly encourage others to go for. If you love travel anywhere near as much as I do, then I’m sure you’ve thought of this. Granted, not everyone joins an online business for the travel freedom. I realize that for most people, the single most important aspect of online business is the ability to create wealth entrepreneurially, make your own schedule, employ huge amounts of automation and be near your family. There’s no denying this and I admit it’s really important to me, too.

That said, the chance to go where you want, without having to worry about your financial house collapsing is pretty cool. Not only do you gain the obvious advantage of travel, but depending on where you go, you also have the chance to employ some geographic arbitrage to your advantage. Imagine being able to work your online business from Thailand, get paid by your customers in dollars, and then spend in Thai Baht. (Effectively, you would be exploiting the currency difference – enabling yourself greater purchasing power.) I personally met many entrepreneurs doing this when I was in Asia, and they were living very nicely.

Think about it, how often can you net more money traveling than you would at home!?
Obviously, working your business abroad – whether it be just for a few months or much longer, does pose many challenges, such as finding a good place to be productive amidst the obvious distractions. This can be difficult, but if you’re persistent and determined to make it happen, you definitely can.

Can you travel around Asia by train?

Can you travel around Asia by train?

We’re thinking about flying to vietnam and taking on from there? Most likely do a train travel around asia rather than flying. Is there a train that will go around Asia, something similar to Eurorail in Europe.

Answer
That would be by Train and Bus or Ferry. Asian countries are not connected by trains. I know that you can take a train from mainland China (Shanghai, Beijing or other main cities) to Hong Kong. From Singapore, you can ride bus to Malaysia. Laos, Burma and Thailand connected by Bus.

An alternative would be budget airlines. Checkout their super low fares. Try Cebu Pacific, Tiger Air and Air Asia.

Cebu Pacific: Philippines to HK, Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, China, Indonesia.
Air Asia: Malaysia

Evaluating Your English Teaching Job Offers ESL TEFL TESOL

You have decided on being an ESL TEFL TESOL teacher so you are off on the job search. Aside from the obvious considerations such as what country to work in and what TESL TEFL TESOL teacher training or qualifications (TEFL/TESOL/CELTA/DELTA) to obtain; there are other things a teachers should consider when looking at potential job offers.

There are many factors a teacher considers which will affect whether they accept a teaching position. The most obvious factor would be the content of the position (i.e. what is going to be taught). What is the school asking of you as a teacher? You must ask yourself if the ESL TEFL TESOL teaching job is interesting and fits into your career plans as a teacher. The person and ESL TEFL TESOL school you will be working for is also an important consideration so you must take the time to talk to them either via email or phone. It would also be beneficial to ask to speak to other teachers from the school to find out their impressions. Knowing what the job is and whom you will be working with are the first step in deciding whether to pursue it further.

Some may say that the most important consideration would be salary and benefits but these should be a secondary consideration to what you want to do and who you will be working with. Regardless of the salary paid, most people will not stay at a position where they feel unsatisfied or have no growth. In addition, the people you work with or for have an enormous impact on your job satisfaction. However, when considering salary and benefits, do not focus as much on the starting salary but rather on the potential for growth and increases. Does the school have growth potential for you as a professional? Do they spell out cost-of-living increases and meritorious raises? Benefits are other areas that can supplement a position where the starting salary is not as good as you would have wished. Get a list of benefits from the company and formulate any questions you may have regarding them so that you can better discuss the position with management and other teachers at the school.

Another factor that may come into play with many teachers when evaluating a position is the ESL TEFL TESOL resources provided by the school for the teacher to prepare their lessons. Teachers spend a large majority of their time preparing for upcoming classes. This requires readily available resources such as teacher edition books, computer, printer, internet access, and preferably a reference library. In addition, there should be a work area set aside at the school for teachers to plan and prepare. Whether the school already has a set curriculum/syllabus for the class to be taught and ESL/EFL/TEFL student books because the teacher may be asked to help to create these resources (i.e worksheets) for your school year if they are not provided. I have known many teachers that have felt the need to move on because of the demands of planning for a school year without adequate resources.

To help you find that perfect (or near perfect) ESL/EFL/TEFL teaching job, you should ask these questions to all prospective employers/schools:

1. What is the salary?

2. How many months is the teaching contract?

3. Do/Can you sponsor me for all paperwork, including teacher’s license, work permit, and visa extension?

4. How soon can you get this paperwork processed?

5. How many hours will I be teaching per week?

6. What kind of medical/travel insurance is on offer?

7. When are the starting and ending times for being at the school regardless of whether there is a class?

8. About how many school or community events a month are teachers required to attend outside normal working hours (teachers’ meetings, parents’ meetings, school festivals, seminars, etc.)?

9. Does the school have/provide ESL TEFL TESOL student books or will I be required to make my own worksheets?

 10. Does the school have whiteboards or chalkboards?

11. Does the school provide all teaching materials needed? What are the items provided?

12. Does the school require that I attend/teach a summer camp?

13. Is there a discipline policy? What is it and how is it enforced?

14. What are the details of the teaching contract “extras” such as:

a. Resigning bonuses

b. Biannual or annual plane tickets to visit home

c. Housing allowances (if no housing allowance then ask about help finding accommodations along with cost in the area of the school)

d. Internet access both in and outside the school

e. Raise schedules

Searching for an ESL TEFL TESOL teaching position is difficult. After spending many hours on a search, making a careful decision regarding a job offer is important. Getting a job offer does not necessarily mean you should take the job. Most schools will not expect you to make a decision on the spot. You will probably be given a few days to a week to make up your mind. If they are unable to provide you with the time to make a decision then you should not consider this teaching job as a viable position. On the other hand, if you decide to go with a school without finding out the proper information, don’t blame the school when the position turns out not to be what you expected or wanted. Weighing the advantages and disadvantages of the job will help you make a more informed decision, rather than deciding on impulse.

When considering where in the world you want to teach, the big 3 for ESL TEFL TESOL jobs are:

Asia: Japan, South Korea, China, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia are the popular spots because they have so many ESL jobs available but there are always positions coming up infrequently in places like Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia though you must be a qualified teacher to obtain these. You may even find positions for Cambodia and Laos but you should look at the reputation of employers carefully due to lack of a solid legal system for recourse. Life can become very difficult “off the beaten path”.

Europe: Everyone dreams of teaching in Greece, Italy, France or Spain but unless you are an European Union (EU) citizen it is difficult to obtain these positions. The more frequent positions are available in Eastern Europe in places like Romania, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland, Ukraine and Russia. These positions don’t pay very well compared to the cost of living in some of these countries but they provide lot’s of opportunity for travel while not teaching.

The Middle East: Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates (UAE) are the most common with Bahrain, Yemen and Qatar occasionally having openings. Now there are also more teaching positions available in Iraq. The Middle East is popular for the money paid for teaching positions but don’t expect much of a social life due to cultural restraints.

Films & books about Vietnam?? (country & culture, not necessary the US war)?

Hi there,
I’m preparing to move to Hanoi, Vietnam later this month and I was hoping somebody could suggest some films, whether Vietnamese or American or other, that may give me a better feel for the Vietnamese culture, the country and the people. I’m interested in any books about Vietnam as well, though it doesn’t all have to be only about the US War…

thanks!
